I hate those ones... I even knew it was coming and still jumped. :(
A few years ago someone sent me one of these but it wasn't the uber-obvious ghost story -- it was one of those can you find out what's wrong with this picture things. So you study the picture looking for some minute aberration until the scary thing jumps out -- you're concentrating on a really challenging puzzle instead of ghosts or whatever. It was better, far less expected.
I had intended to save the e-mail my friend had sent me but somehow lost it over the years.
