ok gang; its time for our annual discussion on costumes, parties and what theme we are gonna do for our jack o lanterns; hehe Last two years have been great; we started off with doing beholder pumpkins for the first one; hehe thanks to Lilith for posting the pics for everyone to see of all the pumpkins: We did goblins last year, hehe that was really fun as well.

lets get a good theme this year and chat it up, let the recipes be traded and spread them tidbits to make this a great holiday.

Hey dude;
just wanted to let ya know I saw your thread...I can't think of anything right now because I'm in a foul mood and whatnot though I'll prolly see if I can come up with something.

Valegrim,

Excellent; am trying to think up a good pumpkin theme; I think it would be cool if we did them again; loved looking at other peoples pics and interpretation of the theme.

I just drawing a blank at the moment and I have a Halloween pre party this weekend and need to make a ghoulish dish hehe.

I have some pumpkins fresh off the vine, I'm currently deciding how to carve them. I'll post some pics when I'm set.

Valegrim,

nice; in the archive thread is our years past halloween pics, worth checking out in my opinion.

Valegrim,

Ok; am making what I am gonna call a Bloody Meatloaf; unless I get a better name; which is just my meatloaf smeared with red sauce on top; probably bbq and katsup; but maybe a chili sauce.

I think a good meatloaf is made with three meats; I like to use Jimmy Dean sage sausage, 1lb; and another pound of lean ground chuck; and 1-2 pounds of fresh ground turkey; mix that in a bowl with salt; pepper, a cup to two cups of breadcrumbs, 1 egg per pound of meat, and some finely chopped onion, bell pepper and celery; a couple shredded carrots. i also like to add celery powder and some red chili flakes; keep in mind that the sage sausage is going to provide much of the flavor; so dont add anything that doesnt go with sage. now mix the heck out of it; make sure none of the meats stay in large clumps; best to use rubber or plastic gloves if your going to do it by hand as the surface area of ground meats is very suceptable to temperture change and you want ot keep all this cold until cooking; also, is pretty messy.

you can cook it like that; put some katsup or bbq sauce on top and it is phenomenal; really, no matter how much I make; its gone; I serve it at a lot of parties; but to really make it special.

take the meat and lay it out and roll or press it to about an inch or two thick; it should look like a sheet; helps if you do this on celophane wrap or one of those bendable mixing or cutting boards. ok; now put a layer of spinach or some other leafy vegetable like swiss chard or some good lettuce; not iceberg; use something dark green or red. ok; now put in some chopped or shredded cheese; something that melts; I like to use Asedero or Munster cheese; and I like white cheeses for the contrast; use what you like.

ok; now gently roll this up like a jelly roll and take off your celophane if you used it; the bendable baking/cutting sheets make it easier to roll without it sticking to the counter or a hard cutting board; but if you flour it I suppose that would work as well as make some gravy; if your doing this for yourself; you can cut it into one pound rolls that fit in your one or two pound bread or meatloaf pans; or you if you dont want it to be square; just put it in a large pan; I always wrap mine in tin foil and put in on a rack so the grease drips away from the meat. If you dont have a rack; you can use a bed of extra carrots and celery and put it on that.

ok; cook until done; cook 325 to 350 and use a meat thermometer, and cook until the pork is done; when it gets close; say last half hour; open the tin foil to brown the meat or smear a nice layer of whatever sauce you want on top so it gets tacky and sticks to the meat.

let this rest when its done; as heating protein molecules twists them like a rubber band; as it cools the protien molecules will unwind, so to speak, and be much juicer than if you cut it and serve it really hot.

This freezes well; I have used left overs for meals; sandwiches; heck grind it up and put it on nachoes or pizza; is good stuff.

Valegrim,

39 Efreeti avatar

Well; I poured marinara sauce on my meatloaf and called it Bloody; went over well; party was big success; almost no leftovers.

so; what is some of the coolest Halloween decorations out there?

Heathy; you feeling better?

Valegrim,

wow; this is the least Halloween chat I have ever experienced on these boards; wierd.

Lilith has put them on the site last couple years; she's awesome that way.

Valegrim,

Just use Photobucket.com to post your pics, it's free. All you have to do is create an account, scan your photos and upload them to the site. I use them to post my drawings of other people's characters.

I am with you Valegrim.

We need to have another Paizo themed pumpkin carving! Though I could not find the old threads, Gobos were two years ago and last year we tried Gary Teter's Avatar (very hard one to get a photo of... :)

With this years PF bestiary I think we should choose one of those critters for the theme. The COVER is awesome (probably beyond my jack o'carvin skills :)

I have a question but wanted to spring board these things into your imaginations first. Start here but this part is really cool too.

Still have fifteen or so days to figure it out so my question for y'all is what would you suggest?

Ah, My mistake. I meant to say Imageshack, without the bracket. ]Imageshack has geckos, but Imageshack has a frog. Quite suitable.

If I can get ahold of some black face paint, gloves, and a sliver wig I'll be going as a drow necromacer(possible with some friends dressed up as different kinds of undead). Mostly because drow are cool and one of my DMs hates them for some strange reason.

Well, they are a big Mary Stu, you know. Or at least, a lot of people make them Mary Stues.
I think I'm going as one of those knights who seeks to attain two shrubberies and chop down the mightiest tree in the forest with a herring. Now what was their name again?....

Here is a suggestion: lets either do skeleton jack o lanterns; or witch houses; what do you think?

I have a really cool jack o'skelly idea in my mind brewing up for some Hallowed goodness, but a creapy pumpkawitch house seems cool too.

Mate is out of town this weekend so I will be doing pumpkins soon. Either one seems fine to me, but I am inclined toward the skeletons.

To keep to the Paizo theme I will try a Seoni, Ezren, or Harsk skeleton but that is just me. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Has Lilith seen this thread?

Of course, we should try for something more clearly Paizo/D&D themed. Maybe sinspawn?

My girlfriend dressed up as her drow character for work one Halloween. Black facepaint, special ear points I helped make for her, the works. Great costume. The workplace had a big to-do and photos were taken and shared among the offices in various cities.

A couple months later the photo of her was taken off the wall of the break room and HR talked to her about inappropriate costumes. Apparently someone (presumably in another city) complained about her being dressed up in "blackface."

Just a word of warning...

Yeah, I can understand their concern. My answer to it is to use a blue or violet paint instead of black. Pink (aka WoW) or gold would work for an elf as well, but honestly almost any color could be exotic or fantasy at that point.

skeletons have been in the game and even the first d&d modules since the beginning; how can skeletons not be d&d themed?

the blackface is a load of you know what; some people (over rightous complainers seriously need an enema)

Skeletons are also not specific to D&D. More importantly, they are pretty default in D&D, nothing special about them.

Yep, we did Paizonians avatars last year after Cosmo encouraged us to 'carve our friends'. (I still think he was inciting us to kill each other.)

Anyhow, I think I'm doing Paizonian goblins this year.

Any link to the pics of the goblins you all did three years ago?

I think I'm going as one of those knights who seeks to attain two shrubberies and chop down the mightiest tree in the forest with a herring. Now what was their name again?....

Head Knight: "We...are the Knights Who Say...NI!"
[underknights: "Ni!" "Ni!" "Ni!"]

Regarding the obtained shrubberies (ill-gotten by King Arthur and Sir Bedevere by threatening passers-by with saying "Ni!" to them {"Do your worst!" ::writhe::}):
Head Knight: "I like the laurel, particularly."

An especially effective costume if you can find some deer antlers to stick into a helmet. ;->

One year, I went as the Lady of the Lake: fairly nice, medieval-ish dress, complete with fake-y sword and rain slicker duds and boots with pond weed strewn across the lot and a rather harried expression...
"You! You want this bleedin' thing, you can 'ave it! More trouble than my job's worth, this is!" etc. ;->

Alas, I am not dressing up this year, since I have nowhere to go in costume, and our apartment complex isn't known for trick-or-treaters to freak out. :~-(

If I needed to in a hurry, though, I can always whip out some of my SCA garb and/or armor.

Meh, forgot my own pumpkin story from awhile back; haven't done them much since, because we're up on a 3rd floor apartment and back from the street, behind trees. Delicately balancing lit jack-o-lanterns on your balcony railing isn't for the faint of heart...

Didn't take any pix (maybe I should have, oh well; can always do it again), but it was Jack Skellington's head in a white pumpkin, the ones most folks just do up as ghosts or what-not. Let me tell you, gang, the meat on these babies is like twice as thick as the orange carving pumpkins; these are meant for cooking rather than anything else, and the meat (once you get past the shell, before the googie bits) is like candy, even raw. You don't need much added sweetening at all to make it really yummy. ;->

Seeds were pretty tasty, too. Anyone make home-done roasted pumpkin seeds?
