Sheesh, don't know what all the fuss is. I have a duskblade in my game that works fairly well. She kicks like a mule, but her AC&HPs ain't all that. And she rarely whips out the spell list (of course we do have several casters that beat her to it)
Gish Shimsh. Let the players have their fun. Some like chocolate in their peanut butter.

I have no problems with duskblades, eldritch knights, or 4e swordmages. It's just the word "g&~#" that I object to.

+1.
Used to play the heck out of elf fighter/magic users in 1e. Have no problem with the "peanut butter cup" concept.
Not nearly enough, you missed the last 4 pages minus a dozen posts.
You're a gish sympathizer, aren't you?
Yes.

Hey, there's "gish-wish" threads elsewhere. Threads evolve. This is the "gish-stitch" thread, blessed by the Chief himself. It has a special niche, plus you can see a fish.
I am that which is striving towards you. I predict that you will discover there are many instantiations that are striving towards your perfection. I just hope that they all rhyme.

I still mantain that "Obi-Wan Kenobi" was cast in that movie for a reason.
Obviously -- especially in light of that fact that Aaron Eckhart would have been exactly perfect for the part, but they gave it to Ewan MacGregor anyway.
I figured out the appeal. In the minds of mear mortals gish=Jedi.
You know, I have seen the word "archetype" mentioned in relation to the arcane warrior class and I have been hammering my memory, trying to come up with a fictional character that 1) could fit that role and 2) didn't have its origins in the game.
The jedi definitely come close. I am sure there are more examples out there. I just can't think of them. Perhaps, I just don't have experience with them. Is there something else I am missing? Or is this something that derived entirely from the gaming scene?
Personally I don't mind the whole fighter/arcanist trope. Though I don't like the use of the word "gish" for the concept either. I don't have any players who are dying to fill the role and I don't have any great urge to play that kind of character either. Well, I do like bards so I suppose that isn't entirely true.
Well the is Elric of Melnibone from Moorcock. I also remember an arcane warrior or two in the Witchworld books. A lot of arcane warriors appear in wirefu martial arts movies too.
