Where Did Thanksgiving Go?
Cheliax David Fryer,

S 01 Shoanti Versus Ogre HI avatar

Okay, maybe I'm just turning into a grumpy old fart, but on Friday I was at the local big box store with my family. They had cleared out almost all the Halloween stuff and were pushing their Christmas stuff. What happened to Thanksgiving? My neighbors hd their Chrstmas tre up when we took the kids there to trick or treat! Any day now, we will be putting out the Christmas decorations the day after the 4th of July. I remends me of a comment that T.V. Guide made a few years ago about how if the Super Bowl pre-game show gets any longer, we will be strting it at halftime of the Super Bowl previous.

The world has made us grumpy with its idiocy. Soon they shall pay! (Probably not, but I like to pretend.)

Thanks, I needed that.

It's not the 59 days before Christmas, it's the twelve days OF Xmas, starting the evening of 24 Dec, dumb-asses.

The Recession has a lot of retailers very nervous.

They need to encourge people to start spending again, else even more people (namely these same retailers) will be laid off.

So, they are hoping to use Christmas to make some sales sooner rather then later.

Thanksgiving doesn't pay the bills. Christmas does. Unless you raise turkeys.

Yes. :(

And, while I sincerely hope that the American (i.e., U.S.) consumer is moving away from SPEND, SPEND, SPEND the transition is being very painful for everyone.

Time for Hallmark to start commercializing Thanksgiving. :)

I'd help, but I'll be too wiped out from all the tryptophan.

I think I read somewhere that Thanksgiving is a unique holiday for Americans in that the only expenditure are travel costs and food. So grocery stores should do better this month.

I know we always update or repurchase Thanksgiving decor in September and early October, because much of the fall/Halloween decor is shared by Thanksgiving.

Same here, though--I started buying Halloween candy the day of or before the same year the kids got old enough to eat it all before the 31st. Yesterday morning, I had to go around all the Xmas lights and trees and wreaths before I could find the already on-clearance Halloween stuff.

Well, that would seem to be an indication that it's not a big holiday in the UK. :(

I think my UK is a few centuries behind the one you inhabit. Go to page 376.

I saw Christmas stuff out about mid October. Thanksgiving has never been one of my top 10 holidays, but yes, it is getting shafted.

I've noticed the Christmas stuff coming out post-Halloween for years (sometimes even in September) and yeah, there is no candy or gift-giving for Thanksgiving so outside of grocery stores, there ain't much happening. It's why I like the holiday a lot, we still play football with the family, take a long neighborhood walk, watch the parade and eat good food. There is no stress over gifts, shopping malls and the money spent, no crazy decorations, no costumes and no commercial weariness like I feel with other holidays. It's one of the few holidays that our materialistic society hasn't ruined in some way.

How can you not like Thanksgiving!? we sit on the couch, watch television, and eat until we puke and the go to sleep. It is the quintessential American holiday. I bet you're a french poodle.

One of the Signs of my eventual successful marriage: my then girlfriend and I prepared the turkey for a thanksgiving feast completely on our own for the first time, and it came out awesomely juicy, to everyone's delight.

Of course, put your pagan religious symbols (Christmas Tree) during on All Hallows Eve...Worship your trees and return to nature...

(How does a Christmas tree at all relate to Christ? Decorating a tree, that's nature worship.)

In my opinion, it is the best holiday.

If the paper turkeys and media coverage vanish, more's the better.

I'll still be at my family dinner table, seeing people I love but don't get to live close to. I'll take a day to be grateful for what I have, even if (in my worldview) there's nobody to be thankful to but the people who are there.

I take Thanksgiving's "disappearance" as incontrovertible evidence of its worth. Xmas is alright, so long as you get your blinders on early in the season and forget about everything but being with family and friends. (that means forget about gifts, too)

Clinically Depressed Poodle,

Too late, my previous owners had those removed when I was a puppy.

6 of one, half dozen of the other.

You're both talking about believing in ghosts.

I like Halloween because it is a holiday dedicated to hooliganism! That's something concrete we can all appreciate.

My local rock station on the radio switched formats in the middle of the day on Friday. They are right now playing christmas music with an add on the station to join us after the holiday season for our new easy listening format. They have no Dj's right now. Just music and a few adds. Christmas music duiring the day and hard rock at night. No Alice Cooper, No Bob & Tom.
