Read what that links you too...

I just dont understand why people write crap like this.

I just typed DnD in google cause I was bored and I found this...

Wow

bunch of BS me thinks, what about you???

And, here I thought DnD was a gateway drug to >Simulation and Artificial Intelligence< -- I mean, building world mechanics that function only in thought, from which PCs can adventure and thrive..

(I guess rolling dice ties in probability theory, too.)

These people have been at this a while and I've read their works before. They can believe as they like, the rest of us who know better can laugh about it. To me, it's like hearing stories about fishing for sharks from someone who's only ever watched the Discovery Channel-the people who actually do it know better. Take it and laugh, it's been written by someone with a worldview a few decades old in origin, that's all.

Andoran (Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Adventure Path, Campaign Setting, Companion, Modules Subscriber)

That was written over 20 years ago. Dark Dungeons, his anti-DnD comic, comes up on E-Bay every once in a while, it is an amusing read. Some people focus their time and energy in strange ways.

Woo, Chick Tracks. Been a while since they've been mentioned on a D&D forum.

I personally think that Jack Chick could never get five friends round for his D&D game, which is the real cause for his bitterness towards the game. Poor man.

linked for those who want to read it

And Jack Chick is pretty freekin crazy!

As a Christian myself I can't see the harm of D&D. Chick says that he has played the game before but you can tell he hasn't by all of the factual errors he makes. If he is such a true Christian he should realize that lying is a sin.

I don't think he's going after the people who "play the game for a hobby" (you and me). I think he's going after the attention that slamming D&D gets you. It's VERY easy to put down our hobby as "satanic and un-godly". He just wants to be in the public eye until he is caught with some sort of hooker and denies everything.

I love Jack Chick! In fact, I want to play a cleric based on my impressions of him. Stupidity on this level cannot be combated; just look and laugh.

(Pathfinder Adventure Path, Tales, Battles Case Subscriber)

Too bad Jack Chick didn't know that a church was were we kids were having out regular D&D game...made up almost completely of church kids.

Maybe one of the Jack Chick threads needs to be stickied. Just sayin'.

and feathered

I'm just saying.

Osirion (Pathfinder Charter Superscriber; Pathfinder Battles Case Subscriber)

Poor Black Leaf.

Earlier in the game I'm playing in now, a younger players character died and he seemed a little bummed. Without missing a beat, the DM said "You're not going to go all 'Black Leaf' on us now, are you?"

I almost spit my soda across the table. All us 30 somethings are cracking up while the 20 somethings are saying "whats so funny?"

good stuff.

Gods above, people are stupid. DnD desentitizes kids? What about video games? Thw person who wrote that article is an idiot.

Osirion (Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber)

I read it. Dudes an asshat.

Really? They wanted to make the rituals "as authentic as possible?" So ... they, what, went with "Vancian" magic with generic, unspecified "somantic" and "verbal" components and effects like "Lightning Bolt" and "Bigby's Grasping Hand?" Errr ... sure. Sounds pretty "authentic" to me...

The Chick Tracks and Arguements on the webpage are over 20 years old, the list of people whose lives were ruined is dated with the last entry in 1988.

Anyway, All Games Considered did a descent podcast on the subject with multiple perspectives. Here is the blurb and the link:

With Mark Kinney, Carol, Mags, David Mattingly, and Chris from the Jesus Geeks podcast. Remembering Dave Arneson. The US Monopoly Championships. What the heck is a speed die? Oh, yeah, apparently there was some kind of minor news about pdfs as well. A glance through Goodman Games' Level Up. A look at Christian objections towards gaming, and religious games and themes in games. A little feedback, chatter on upcoming episodes, and Mark's talking about forum alternatives again. Is THAT what I'm supposed to be demanding? Darn. I must be a pretty lax Dungeon Master (DM). I think I'll take my own life. Or summon a demon according to that ol' necromancer Gygax's precise instructions in the old "Cacaodemon" spell...

I agree. Some "sticky stuff," then a few feathers. I hear bird crap is pretty sticky...

Yeah... plus, of course, his churches are home to some of the weirdest ritualism and worst crimes (i.e. sexual molestation, murder, and rape). These kind of bible-bangers deserve the fringe role they currently have for being so anti-anyone-else (even other Christians). Did you see that accusation that being a Muslim will send you to hell? Gawd...

And you're the pacifist...

If by killing you mean killing your PCs, then my body count probably exceeds most here (and that in only 5 years of gaming!).

I just glanced over the article, having heard its rhetoric for the 20 years I have been playing RPGs, and would like to give my opinion. . .ahem. . .LOL!

Thank you.

My experience is that some Christians build their identity on slamming Satan and sadly, some of them are just too stupid to actually find anything evil to rail against.

"NO, NOT BLACKLEAF! NO, NO! I'M GOING TO DIE!"

I still chuckle every time I think of that...

Poor, poor Blackleaf... shoulda maxed out her Perception and DD!

I'm afraid I'm one of the gamers younger than 30. What's the joke?

Dark Dungeons

This is the Jack Chick strip they're talking about above... this version is actually different to the one I originally saw years ago. It's been edited and trimmed a bit.

I've been playing for 30 years now. According to Chick, I should be casting spells and hanging out with hot Satanist chicks.

I feel gypped...

Yeah, Ms. Frost was HOT.

MORE fun with Jack Dick...er, Chick. Still can't find the original version, though.

I don't know... I was always more of a fan of Debbie's Mum... she was a bit of a MILF! ;)

(Pathfinder Adventure Path, Tales, Battles Case Subscriber)

A careful comparison of frames shows that Ms. Frost is actually Debbie's mom with an angry face. We've obviously only scratched the surface of what freaky s!*% was goin' on in Debbie's world.

Osirion (RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32)

Yeah, I always did think they looked similar. Maybe Ms. Frost is Debbie's Mum's D&D playing alter ego?

50% off! Nobody else can save you! Trust Jesus today! Read the Next Step, available at Christian bookstores or from Chick Publications.

Gosh... this certainly doesn't look like a get-rich-quick scheme to take advantage of Christians, nosiree! And it's certainly not going against the principles of Jesus, to love your neighbor, no!

(Pathfinder Adventure Path, Tales, Battles Case Subscriber)

I think it is more likely a paranoid expression of Xnty's realization of the complex depths of human nature. Little preaching shacks like J.C.'s and their printers don't get rich. Social pressures and psychological imbalances can mix with subtle principles in some pretty destructive and twisted ways.

Yeah, I guess you're right. But... megachurches do make money.

Look at Jonestown.

I´m just happy that this BS never managed to make it across the Big Pond.
It is patently ridiculous.

OTOH...[threadjack] Recently, a overcautious communal youth welfare office prohibited a LARP with teenagers because the violence in a LARP is not wholesome in the light of the recent killing spree by a youth in southern Germany. *Groan* Sure, bashing each other with a foam sword in the woods will make youths snatch up their dads guns and run amok in their schools... I think that male youths especially have a high level of testosterone, and it is probably better that they get that out of their systems in a somewhat controlled way instead of letting it run wild. But then, I´m no professional in youth welfare...[/threadjack]

Stefan

... teehee ... his last name is "Chick"

... priceless. ^_^

And by the by, when I first read these I laughed because I HONESTLY thought that it WAS a joke. Like going so over the top to poke fun at everyone who ridiculed it.

... I think it got funnier when I found out it was serious.

Semi off-topic.

I never realized it, but Chick Publications is like 15 minutes from where I live. That's a little... disconcerting.

I have a Christian friend who thinks DnD is bad, but won't say why. This next part is a bit of an actual conversation we had.

Me: "So why do you think DnD is bad?"
Him: "Because it is."
Me: "Oh no, you can't just say that. I wan't an actual reason you think DnD is bad. Is it the spells? The dice rolling? What?"
Him: "It's just bad."

As you can see, my friend is an idiot who enjoys RPGs online, but can't stand DnD. I think he is a closet case gamer that doesn't want to admit he would like to play DnD because he thinks it's not 'The Christian way' or something.
