There were two giant cockroaches, mating, under the old recliner when I went back to the old place to drag it out to the street for pick-up. They ran out of the house on to the porch, still in coitus. When I came back to the house, I stomped them flat together. The end.
Moral?
As long as I am aware of the spider, I am perfectly okay. If I back into a web and feel it crawling up the otherside, I freak out and run while yelling at the top of my lungs. I like them though, so its a win-lose sort a thing. Roaches though? They die quickly under the bottoms of shoes... a "soleful" killing, if you will.
I spend a lot of time in my library (I'm a big bibliophile). Those little tiny spiders love books and book shelves, and they are always running around. They often die inside of the front or back cover. I assume they are feeding on some annoying little twits that eat paper or book glue. I try to not kill them, they are so small and delicate--almost transparent.

Those are brown recluse spiders. When they bite you, there is a chance that your skin will turn black and begin to slough off.

Heh, no, SM. Funny enough, brown recluse are actually brown. And not near this tiny.
Oh my house is definately spider filled.
I happen to adore spiders.
I have seen four different species of spider in my house in the last two days and it makes me smile every time i see them.
I don't think of them as spiders....I think of them as Mobile Insect Control Units :)
Anyway, I live in Australia and we have some of the coolest arachnids in the world.
I love the whistling spiders from northern Queensland....up to 6cm in body length and a total length of 16cm...plush they make a weird noise if you disturb them...

Actually, if all those things happened after being bitten by a radioactive spider, I too would be increadibly whiny.
I'm not a fan of spiders, but I can usually deal with them calmly (unless they startle me, of course).
But these m&+@%+#$!#%+s all need to die. The last time one was in my living room, I managed to catch it (they're supernaturally fast), but I only got half of it, and the other half kept running. Then I caught the other half too. I was pretty proud of myself.
But these motherf~@&ers all need to die.

Duuuude. Anything that eats roaches (and/or mosquitoes) is welcome at my house.
When I was in grad school in Louisiana, the married student housing was reeeeeeeally buggy. All of the apartments had roaches. And those palmetto bugs were everywhere. We would have all chipped in to buy those little guys Abita beers and small pest po-boys.
I wonder if the fear we have of spiders and snakes is instinctual. I don't remember ever telling my kid that spiders can hurt/bite/etc. We tell her they eat mosquitoes. And she has a couple of movies where spiders are good guys/gals (James and the Giant Peach, Bug's Life). Where did she learn to cringe when she saw a gorgeous big yellow and black garden spider?
And even I, a spider fan, don't want to get too close. "You're welcome in my yard and bushes, but I'm not going to pet you."
It has to be instinct.

I think I've heard somewhere that that is the case. (Or, at least, is considered probable. I don't know that something like that can be proven.)
In terms of evolution, cavemen who ran away from spiders lived longer than those who pet them and hugged them.

It could be. But I only ever cringed when I didn't know they were there(see above post). If I saw a spider crawling around, I was trying to get it to crawl on to my hand. Daddy long legs are my favorite.

I just remembered the time when I was in college, and was in one of my English classes, and out of the corner of my eye I saw a spider on my chair about to climb onto my leg. I screamed and jumped out of my chair, and the professor stopped lecturing and he and the rest of the class just stared at me. Fortunately one of my friends was sitting next to me, and she just shook her head and brushed it onto the floor. It was very embarassing, but the little s$+! startled me.

I don't think so. More than once, I've seen kids go from having no aversion whatsoever to spiders (even eating them, on occasion), to dispassionately calling them 'icky,' to eventual, abject fear. If the fear was instinctual, I think kids would have an aversion to spiders from birth. The fact that the fear develops gradually over time suggests to me that it is a learned behavior.

Nah, I love spiders. From books. As long as there aren't pictures. I love learning about them, but I can't stand them. Whenever I see a spider in my room, I take my blanket, exit the room, and sleep on the floor. They. Freak. Me. Out.
Once, many years ago, I was trick-or-treating with some friends. there was this one house that had a HUGE spider on its porch. And it was real. The porch was real small, too, you couldn't get more than 2 feet away from the spider.I trick-or-treated elsewhere. Selfish jerks, they probably left it there on purpose.

In the house I was living in a few years ago, we were inundated with recluse, wife even caught one with it's babies riding piggyback...oh the damage that could do...scary...
Thankfully no recluse in the house we're living in now...

In the house I was living in a few years ago, we were inundated with recluse, wife even caught one with it's babies riding piggyback...oh the damage that could do...scary...

Oh, the memories. Was living in Florida a couple of years ago, and saw what I thought was a fairly large fuzzy spider crawling across my dining/kitchen floor. No big deal, I just tapped it with my toe to kill it.
(I do NOT like spiders, in my house, ever. They can eat all the friggin bugs they want OUTside! And In Florida there are plenty. The house I was renting was literally built ON a giant anthill.)Imagine my surprise/dismay when the 'fuzz' jumped off of the mommy and began spreading rapidly! I snagged two cans of Raid and hosed the entire area. (about a 3' circle and spreading by the time I grabbed the cans and got back!)
It wasn't until last year that I heard about the Brown recluse,... OY! the potential for disaster! (Shudder)
MY spiders are welcome to stay out side and eat the ants and wasps that are invading from there.

About 12 years ago, one of the bosses at the place I was working ended up in the hospital when he was trimming his hedges and had to step into them to trim the top. His leg ended up being bitten 10 times by the brown recluses he disturbed. He was out for about a week.
I have a big spider in one of my basement windows. That guy has caught and eaten over 30 earwigs, ants and flies but yet my wife still wants to me to break the vacuum out to get rid of him. I keep "forgetting."

I have a similar situation. Several of our downstairs windows have spiders nesting between the class and the screen. Luckily, we keep the curtains closed, so my wife has never noticed them. I've also got spiders nesting in my basement window wells, especially since I got the new covers to keep the rain out.

That may be because the other cavemen bashed their heads in after they went on and on about their spider George being their friend.

We get huge wolf/jumping spiders here in SW FL that like to sneak into houses. They're completely harmless to humans, but something primal activates in the human reptile brain when one of these 3"-5" buggers come at you at high speed.
