Tatsu smiles at her new companions and their eagerness. "Just like that? But what shall we gather first? I was hoping master Thumpy here," and she points to the dwarf, "would have some sort of idea about the ironbloom mushrooms and if the clanholds to the north might have some to trade?"
"Or should we try the witch Ulizila first? I hear she is shrewd negotiator and will not be easy to bargain with. I don't know where she is, only she is in the forest somewhere. Which leaves us with the elderwood moss, which also is somewhere deep in the forest. So if we are going to the forest, we should talk to Kreed's man, Milon Rhodam, up at the Consortium Camp to the east of the village."
"I could make these decisions myself, but I would rather my companions had a say in what approach we take. I am smart enough to know that I don't know it all, and I don't have the pride to swing around, if you know what I mean."
Being that Lia and Ser are newer to town than you two (having been with the carnival in Falcon's Hallow), you would have a pretty good idea of what kind of man Kreed is. And he's kind of man who could care less about the town or people as long as he's making money.
He exults over his position whenever he can. He beats and murders those who anger him (even in broad daylight in front of witnesses), and has a fondness for publicly raping women.
You've seen him quite a few times taking his son, Jurin, to the carnival. Though everytime he came he spent most of his time demanding taxs from your employer, or to beat and mock you and your fellow carnies (though mocked he never beat you. Something about you scared the man).
"Get a grip Kidlat. He's the moron who kept screaming for taxes and eyeing up the girls. Him and his no-good, lumpen son. The only thing we're asking him for is his own death certificate."
Laz
Spoiler:
If he'd tried mocking either of us, he'd have been multi-coloured toast in about 10 seconds flat.
"I hope it doesn't come to that. Kreed isn't the kind to fight fair. I really don't want to be fighting 30 or so lumberjacks or however many he can gather in a short period of time. I would prefer to avoid him if possible." Tatsu states.
"No so much a moron if he cares about his profit that much. Remember if the entire town is sick who will work his industries. Perhaps we can convince him it is in his interest to help us. What do you think?"
"Or we can simply mount an expedition to Kreed's place. Hey, doesn't that Kreed guy have any relatives we can ask for help? Hopefully with a better disposition."
Tatsu, repeating herself again asks Thumpy about the ironbloom mushrooms. "Thumpy, are you from the north? Are there clanholds there? Or are we expecting to go ruin-searching to find these mushrooms?"
Laz, does THumpy know about the dwarves or is he a distant dwarf?
as for the Kreed idea
She turns to the dynamic duo and exclaims, "I am not very good in social settings. I prefer combat to parlay, it's more straightforward. I don't have great speech making skills and I am afriad that bully Kreed will piss me off and I'll punch him in the nose. (I've done it before, boys with a wink) No, let's check the general store to see if they've got a map and if that runs dry, we'll check with the woodsman at the Camp and try to keep a low profile in the meanwhile." She points at Clovis in particular. "That means you, Clovis. I've enjoyed your antics so far but among those burly 'jacks, less funny, more business. Can you handle that? You, too, Kidlat."
Since your character is from the Five King Mountains and mostly a dwarf you'd know about ironbloom mushroom. They're a specialty, but it would take days to get to a trading post up north. Please make history for me.
As the newly formed party talk amongst themselves and head across to the general store, a voice calls out to Clovis and Kidlat. They turn and see a group of five children heading towards them. The first one a tall, lean girl, with auburn hair. She carries a crude club (mostly a thick tree branch). The second is tall, slightly muscular boy, the oldest of the five. He smiles and waves at the two carnies. With him walks a short, husky, blonde haired boy. He wears the clothes of an aristocrat or noble. Finally behind him the last two, a short, pale skinned boy, obviously the youngest; And a lean, red-headed boy, carrying a dagger.
They wave and walk up the group.
Lia, Ser
Spoiler:
Though having not been in Falcon's Hallow you have seen the children before, and know a little about them.
The boy dressed in noble garb is Jurin Kreed, son of Gavel Kreed. The boy behaves insufferably, snarling at the other children and threatening to have his dad’s bodyguards beat them if they don’t
do everything he says.
The girl is the local tomboy, you hear hear her father is famous. The pale skinned child is the son of a local wizards who lives in a shack outside of the town proper. The tall boy is the son of the local butcher. Your not sure of the red-headed boy.
Clovis, Kidlat
Spoiler:
You're well aquainted with all these children. The defacto leader of the group is Kimi Eavewalker (the one with the club). Her father, an elfven ranger named Irdis, is quite famous in the hollow. She's very protective of her friends.
The boy in noble garb is Jurin Kreed, son of Gavel Kreed. Though he behaves insufferably, snarling at the other children and threatening to have his dad’s bodyguards beat them, you've seen he's got good in his deep down, and in private would do anything for his friends.
The slightly muscular boy is Mikra Jabbs, son of the local butcher. The boy seems to have several mental deficiencies. He cannot read, is easily confused, and believes almost everything he is told. Mikra is well liked by everyone. While not incredibly bright, the boy possesses limitless kindness and his bright smile wins the hearts of almost anyone who meets him.
Savram Vade, thee pale skinned child, is a quiet, withdrawn nine-year-old boy, whose bright eyes betray intelligence far beyond his years. He is the son of the mysterious wizard Sharvaros who lives outside the city proper.
Finally is Hollin Hebbradan a freckly faced ten-year-old boy missing his two front teeth. His parents seem to have passed on a few years ago, you're not sure why.ollin’s mother died. Now Hollin’s older sister, a beautiful young red-haired woman named Ralla, looks after him. The two have struggled to make ends meet. Hollin is a skilled woodcarver and he manages to earn a few copper pieces hawking his statuettes.
Looking at Tatsu, the halfling just shrugs. "Whatever. Keep your hair on sweetcakes." It looks for a half second as if he might say more, but as the children approach he grins like a loon and turns to them. Oddly enough, Clovis does have people skills. +9 Diplomacy, not that its easy to tell.
"Good to see you. What's up?" He taps Tatsu on the arm. "Map source. If anyone knows anything, it's these guys." His wide smile just got wider.
Mikra returns the halfings smile. "We're going...", before the boy can even finish Jurin and Kimi have their hand over his mouth.
"Out!" Kimi bursts "Outside... on this glorious day". She smiles sheepishly. The others quickly nod their heads in agreement, as Jurin whispers to something to Mikra.
"We all saw you here, and were surprised you didn't leave with the rest of the carnival. Good thing you didn't the town would be boring with out atleast you two." She glances at Tatsu and the others. "So how are ya friends?"
"You know us, where Kidlat and I walk, excitement follows. These,"
Clovis gestures grandly
"are the basic building blocks of the all new, all fantastic Clovis and Kidlat Travelling Wonder Show! Sweetcakes is going to throw out undesirables, Thumpy will juggle for your amusement, Ser and Lia have mysterious powers and we,"
- he puts an arm around Kidlat,
"are our own special deluxe selves who you already know so well. Oh - and I'm lying."
He lets go of Kidlat and sits down. "Kimi, you guys are the real eyes and ears around here. Can you tell us some stuff? There's kind of a problem with illness we'd like to solve. Could really use your help."
Clovis looks at Tatsu and says seriously (by his standards), "Guess we'll get used to each other. You call me, I'll call you - why don't we call it quits? Lemme talk to the kids. They're up to something."
"Hi Kimi - don't run off just yet. We could really use some information." In a whisper he adds "What's the huge rush? Anything fun? Me and Kidlat are always up for a little sparkle in our lives."
Tatsu lets Clovis talk to the kids and turns aside to Thumpy. Quietly, she says to him, "We will have to, at some point, I think. We have to have some of those mushrooms. We'll wait to see what Clovis's little friends have to say and then plan accordingly."
"i don't think letting Clovis talk to the kids is a good idea," Lia says. "From what I've seen, he's more likely to get us in trouble then get information. Be prepared to run." ;)
"Hi Kimi - don't run off just yet. We could really use some information." In a whisper he adds "What's the huge rush? Anything fun? Me and Kidlat are always up for a little sparkle in our lives."
The kids huddle quickly before Kimi steps back to Clovis,
Clovis
Spoiler:
She spits on her hand and whispers back "If ya can keep a promise I can tell you?"
She holds out her hand waiting to see if Clovis shakes or not
Kimi and the others smile as lovis shakes. She moves closer to him and whispers...
Clovis
Spoiler:
"Me an the others got into an fight with some of the other kids about whether the old halfway house is haunted. Anyways it end with them triple-dog daring us into spending the night out there." Clovis can see Jarin and the others are alottle upset about it. Kimi seems in high spirits.
"But you can't tell anyone, this is a secret dare and well get our hides tanned if our parents find out!"
Elara's Halfway House was an orphanage about 8 miles to the west of town. It was burned to ash two months ago, no one survived the blaze. The cause is a mystery.
Elara was a kind, selfless woman. She came rarely came to town, only when the children needed groceries. Though in your time with the carnival she did bring the children to see it.
Entering the Goose'n'Gander the others see cases of lamp oil, bags of rice, vials of ink and many other items all over the store. Getting closer to the counter you see taxidermy nixies and a petrified pseudodragon.
"They're all the rage this season!" a gnome with hair the color of fall leaves jumps up onto a stool and points to the nixie.
"Uh, No, actually, we were looking for a map of the general area. Like one with neighboring communities or details of the mountains or the forest. We're interested in exploring those areas." Tatsu says. "Do you have anything like that?"
"General... area? Hmm lets see" he ducks under the counter and after a moment reappears.
He lays out two maps, "This one, pointing to the map on the right, is a very detailed map of the Andoran. This one though only has the local area on it" he says with a smile
Lia, Ser
Spoiler:
You are both sense there's just something not right about either the gnome or the maps. But you're not sure which
Ser nudges lia who he notices to have a similar puzzled look on her face for a moment, "something about this seem weird to you? I can't place it but it feels strange." he looks to the others to judge their reactions
"Woah. Awesome dare. I so want to tell Kidlat, he'd love it - we could help you..." he sounds pleading.
At the back of his mind is the idea that letting the kids do this on their own is a really bad idea, but of course, having promised, his hands are tied.
"... except we've got to find out what's making people sick around here. You don't have any ideas do you? Hey! Do you think there'd be any clues at the Half-way House?"
Kimi's eyes light up you can tell she really wants to help you and the others in this, but like you she's tied to something else.
"No clue what's makin people sick. Maybe the ghost! If you beleive in that type of thing."
Hollin walks up and pulls at Kimi, "We gotta go Kimi. We still have to get ready for the night. Plus... plus I don't wanna walk to the house as it gets dark." his voice shacking.
By the time you finished eating and the time the others spent getting Julia to the herbalist it's close to midday. But due to the massive size of Droskar's Crag (28,822 ft) sunset comes early.
"Bet you're right. Me and my guys so need to get into that house. That's the first time I've ever wished I hadn't promised something. You know me - I won't break it."
He thinks for a second and then looks hard at Kimi and Hollin.
"How about we make a new promise? Kinda like this. I get my guys to come to the house with you without telling them why you're going. I can make something up. Kidlat'll go anywhere that sounds freaky anyway.
That way, you guys don't get your butts kicked and we make sure you all stay around to be our eyes and ears in this town. Cos' I'm really getting a feeling we're going to need your help."
He spits hopefully on his hand again and holds it out to them.
Kimi looks at Clovis and then at Hollin and the others. "I'm sorry Clovis" she shakes her head, "We would love for you all to come. We think you and Kidlat are coolest adults we know. But we made a promise that only we would go to Elara's. If we were to change the promise, even if the other kids never found out, it would make us look bad."
"But we can help though, if we find anything at the Elara's that may look like it may make people sick we'll bring it to you!" She thinks about it for a minute
"Well if makes you sick we probably shouldn't touch it. So we'll come and tell you or Kidlat right away!"
With Hollin Still urging her to move she sight and smile at the halfling.
"Sorry Clovis we really have to go. If we don't get there these chickens will start crying"
"IM NOT A CHICKEN" Jurin shouts
The others start smiling. They say their goodbyes and head down the north road.
"A promise is a promise. I understand that. Keep a good look out and tell us right away if you find anything. It's real important Kimi - good folks are going to die."
*under his breath as the kids move away* "Bugger. Nearly worked."
"Remember that nice woman Elara, who ran the half-way house orphanage that got burned down a couple of months back? Kimi and the gang are going up there to stay the night - I promised not to tell, but I reckon you don't count - said you'd think it was cool, Kimi didn't say not to tell you, and she's smart.
Think you can persuade warrior princess we need to go up there without letting them know why? Three reasons. First up, Kimi's not nearly as tough as she looks and if there's anything up there, and bad stuff happens to them, I'm just a bad person. The kids are scared. They're not showing it so much, but I know.
Second up, that whole fire was a mystery. Mystery means clues. Clues are what we want.
Third up, c'mon Kidlat, how can we possibly miss out on something like this. It's a genuine haunted house maybe!"
Ser nudges lia who he notices to have a similar puzzled look on her face for a moment, "something about this seem weird to you? I can't place it but it feels strange." he looks to the others to judge their reactions
"Yeah, something does seem a little off," Lia admits. She bends over to examine the maps more closely. 1d20+5, 1d20+7=[10, 5], [10, 7] 15 for Perception, 17 for Insight.
"I got no clue. I guess so. If your cute crush goes for it, so will the rest. Could be useful. I'm really not happy about Kimi and the rest sitting up all night in that burned out ruin."
