Though fans of Dungeons & Dragons have led the Old School Revival, many other tabletop roleplaying games from the 1970s and early '80s still have fans. One of the oldest, strongest and best loved is the Hero System - the all-encompassing Hero Games rules system founded on the landmark 1981 superhero RPG Champions.
My opinion? Wow. Talk about a long, arduous road. Shows how even good customer service and product is not enough: you've got to evolve with the times. Wishing the best to Hero and the MMO!
Hero does seem to be evolving. I am surprised to see 6th edition not make more drastic changes. This seems a risky move to me as I still remember the 3.0 -> 3.5 hate. Then again, they are giving it a glossy new look. Something people have been asking for. I always thought content was more important than a slick presentation, but it appears I am in the minority. That is not to say I am questioning the content of 6th edition.
What bugs me, and no where near the amount of angst certain other systems have incurred, is the decision to 'save' some rules and release them in later supplements. I am looking at you Advanced Player's Guide. I understand why they are doing it. The market has proven this a profitable strategy. I am leaning towards demonstrating my disfavor by not following Hero into 6th. It is a tough decision though, because it looks like they have really tightened the system up.

The big problem with 5th revised was, to me, it was thicker than Pathfinder's book, but made of newsprint inside. Or just about that cheaply. The FLGS kept trying to sell me one and telling me 'Dude, it's 700 pages, you can't do 700 pages for $50 on decent paper'.
I never bought the revised version, I do have the original 5th version (which had slightly better paper).
It's not the 'slickness' or 'wow cool art'. It's the 'Oh damn, I ripped another page in this stupid cheap book'. I know people who bought it and the spine ripped apart and pages tore, because it was cheaply made. Someone in accounting made that decision.
I was looking at a copy in the gaming store and a page tore while I was flipping through it. Maybe the local area just got a bad batch, but, when you've got people you know complaining about the spine falling apart and the pages tearing during normal game use...
