I have a Shadow Adept in the Faerun campaign I'm about start, and were talking about his backstory, and the following question came up: Did Shadow Weave magic suffer the same problems as normal Weave magic during the Time of Troubles? I'd think that it did, because all the gods were cast down as mortals, but then again, Shar isn't as bonded with the Shadow Weave as Mystra is with the Weave, as I understand it. So, what would that mean for the Shadow Weave users?

Also, he can make his own smokepowder- would this work normally in dead and wild magic zones?

I forget which FR rules book it is in but one of the newer ones talks about how there are shadow magic dead areas and shadow magic wild areas but they are very rare as shadow magic is not as prevalent as weave magic. Also they don't correspond to the same areas necessarily as the weave (ie if you fine a wild magic area it won't necessarily be a shadow wild magic area too and vice versa if a shadow adept finds a shadow dead weave area it won't necessarily be a weave dead area.)

As for smokepowder that would be up to the DM. I don't see any reason to say NO but then again, I don't see any reason to say YES either.

I'll have to check on the smokepowder thing, though I am inclinded to say that since its alchemical, my gut instinct is no.

As far as the wild magic regions go, even though Shar isn't as bonded to the SW as Mystra is to the Weave, the shadow weave is affected by the weave in that it exists in the weaves "negative spaces," so I would assume that as the weave began to unravel, some parts of the Shadow Weave would start to come unhinged and thus wild and dead magic zones exist for it as well, but not in the same spots as those in the Weave. Though that is just my opinion.

I am the shadow adept in his campaign, and it surprized me as well, but smokepowder IS magical, It takes alchemy checks and access to the craft wonderous item feat. the Campaign book stated that it does not function in dead magic zones.

I always thought that the shadow weave (since the magic came from Shar herself) was separate from Mystra's weave and therefore not affected by dead or wild magic zones. It would explain its recent appeal to those who want to use magical powers that did'nt have no(for now)restrictions normal wizards have to abide.
But then thats only my take on the matter, i'm going to look over the FR books to find out.
