I posted a question under an existing thread a little while ago and haven't seen a response. We're gaming in a couple of hours and I need to get an opinion on spotting a Shadowdancer. Here's the link to the thread:

http://paizo.com/dragon/messageboards/compendium/howToSpotAShadowdancer

I'm sorry. I don't know how to use the BBCode tags. :(

Would someone please take a look?

My DM says that because my shadowdancer is wearing/carrying magic items she can be seen by anyone who is using detect magic or arcane sight even when she's hiding. I contend that since she has "Hide in Plain Sight" that wouldn't be the case because she only has to have a shadow within ten feet of her to effectively be "hiding behind something".

Please let me know what you think.

I am at work & do not have any books handy, but off the top of my head (and out of the SRD) I would rule that detect magic would only work slowly. It takes 3 rounds to really figure anything out. The caster would be able to at first detect the presence of magic, but not the area of it or pinpoint in any way. 2nd round would be able to get the number of auras and power of the strongest. Only on the 3rd round of observation would the caster be able to figure out where each of the magic auras was coming from and perhaps pinpoint the location of your character. Even then, though, if you are successfully hidden your character would still be unseen, and benefit from total concealment, etc.

Detect Evil says, "If an aura is outside your line of sight, then you discern its direction but not its exact location." Detect Magic mentions that if you have line of sight then you can make checks to identify the school of magic. I would suggest that if your character has concealment by hiding within a shadow, then the caster does not have line of sight and thus can only identify the direction you are at, not your exact location.

Thanks to both of you!!
