I'm happy to announce the launch of Kobold Quarterly , an Open Design 'zine for gamers! The first issue will appear this summer, and all those who subscribe before the first issue ships will be charter subscribers.
Eight Kobold Answers
1. Yes, this is a small community zine about D&D and fantasy gaming.
2. Yes, I will be accepting art submissions, though I'll only pay for commissioned pieces.
3. Yes, I'm looking for article queries from Open Design patrons.
4. No, I will not accept more than one query at a time.
5. No, there are no writer's guidelines yet.
6. Yes, subscribers will choose the contents of future issues and the subjects of future interviews.
7. Yes, the Erik Mona interview will appear in the first issue. So will an ecology article.
8. Subscribe today, or (little known fact) you will soon fall into a kobold ambush! And no one wants that.
Subscriptions are just $12 for a year (4 issues). More information is available at The Free City site, the home of Open Design.
Sorry, DF... I didn't see your post when I put up it's identical twin two hours ago.
Huh? What? Oh, no worries man. Jump on it, the more the merrier!

Awesome! This totally rocks. But is this an online thing or an actual check-you-mail magazine?
Hmmm...I believe it will start off as PDF. Perhaps there could be a Print On Demand option? If there is enough interest it might move to print. You'll just have to sign up and see.

It is a PDf file to start out with. However, Wolfgang, I would be willing to pay more for a print version. Pretty, pretty please!!!

I'd prefer to pay for a printed copy. I wonder if Wolfgang could set that up sooner than later?

I hear this a fair bit at Open Design, and I've certainly been willing to accommodate it so far, why stop now? I'm happy to provide printed copies to make gamers happy. :)
The problem is pricing. For a small-circulation 'zine, printing and shipping alone costs more than $12, never mind the art and writing costs. I can offer it as an option on top of a regular subscription, with a cost will be at least double the PDF-only cost for US addresses (possibly more).
Is there an audience for a $25 or $30/year quarterly? I have no idea.

Personally, I might pay 50% more for a hard copy, rather than a PDF - but no more than that. I would not pay $25 for a quarterly magazine... at least not until I'm sure that I like the content (no offense).

~smiles and shrugs~ You come up with a fair and resonable price and I will pay it. ~grins~ Anything to keep you from sending your ghouls after me. Yes, that sounds like a fair price, but I can understand if it is a bit more than that, with printing and shipping cost.
Huzzah for Wolfgang Baur! I can't wait to read over this stuff!

I'll pay it. So, should I just order now at $12 or will you be able to configure a price for a printed version?

For something the size of Dragon or perhaps a bit smaller (say 50 pp. of non-ad content)? I'd do it in a heartbeat.
Well, at the moment, it's about 30 pp of non-ad content per issue, but that can increase if I get enough queries and good content. At a certain level, any magazine is only as good as its contributors.

I'm still chasing down pricing for the printed version. I'd recommend signing up for the PDF and doing an upgrade if a print version price to your liking arrives.
Plus, I hope to offer a lulu.com print-on-demand version as well. The Open Design patrons who have used that so far all raved about the print quality.
Print or PDF, I am definitely subscribing to this -- but print would be sweet

It's currently PDF+print-on-demand, and will go PDF+print as soon as the subscriber base warrants it.

When you say "all rights to the image", referring to art submissions, are you talking about one-time reproduction rights or literally all rights in that you now have exclusive ownership and the right to use it anywhere you like, in perpetuity?

Nah, Open Design doesn't really take all rights for anything. I'm hoping for all worldwide rights for a period of time, or one-time usage rights.
Doesn't seem fair, otherwise. I should probably make that clearer.
