I have an idea for a game I'd like to GM....characters from Earth that find their way into a fantasy setting. I'm working on the details right now, but before I get too invested in this type of conversion (D20 Modern to D&D) I'd like to see how much interest there would be for this kind of game.

Humm what rule set? Ya could build it straight Pathfinder . Have you thought of allowing the players to use NPc classes? Or maybe just fighter, rogue and such? It might work well.
Fighter, rogue, barbarian, and expert would work great as would aristocrat. It's just a bit of refluff maybe take away all but light armor on them all
Also if ya have CoC d20 there is a really good class less system in there.

Just don't have an obnoxious baby unicorn tagging along with the party. Otherwise:

Hmmm, for the next Adventure Path open-call, I'm really tempted for the rival adventuring group to all act like Ash clones.

This would be a pure Pathfinder game. Characters would start off ats 3rd level Aristocrats, Experts or Warriors with some D20 Modern skills thrown in. The NPC Classes would have a liitle more oomph (I'm going to add in some class features even though they ususally have none).
I still need to track down a module or maybe use a pre-existing Adventure Path (Savage Tide comes to mind). In order to port over the Wealth system of D20 Modern (no worries to those that don't have D20 Modern book as there is a hypertext SRD of it). I'll get some more info posted up later.
At this point I'd like to hear character ideas. When the rules are all hammered out, I'll need at least 4 players, ideally 8.

Some things to consider.
The characters will most likely be employees of a corporation doing research on parallel planes and their resources have allowed them to create a one time portal to the fantasy world. Of course the brainheads will need brawn to keep them alive so corporate goons will go with them.
Another option is to have the characters scooped up from a naturally occuring phenomenon that happens once every millenmia. This would allow character types of any sort (thoughh brainheads, brutes and politicos will still be needed). This provides a wealth of options background wise.
I'm not sure which option I want to go with yet, but I'm leaning towards the latter.

I've always wanted to try a Hacker style character for modern. I'm not sure where he would fit into a Fantasy Setting, but I'd still be interested to give it a go if you think it could work. maybe he could be a tech guy hired to manage the computers involved in running the portal machine?
I'll keep my eye on this Thread in any case.

This sounds like an interesting way to start an adventure. I've always been a fan of this type of story. It creates some confusion for the character as they try to decide if what is happening is real or just in their head.
I to have not played in a D20 modern game, so a gentle nudge to any resources I could find online would be appreciated.
Twin Dragons, I think that either option would be workable, but that perhaps the natural phenomenon option would be easier if a wider variety of fantasy classes are wanted.
A character that starts D20 Modern and then leaps into a Pathfinder class out of necessity, that should be really interesting. Count me in if ya still have space available.

Okay, here’s the skinny on creation of Earth heroes.
Human characters only; racial retraining will be allowed further in-game.
All characters start off as 3rd level Earth aristocrats, experts or warriors.
The following skills are added to the Pathfinder rules to simulate an Earth background; Computer Use, Craft, Demolitions, Drive, Investigate, Knowledge, Navigate, Perform, Pilot, Profession, Repair and Research.
Earth Aristocrat
BAB: As Pathfinder Aristocrat
HD: As Pathfinder Aristocrat (max HP per HD)
Saves: As Pathfinder Aristocrat
Skills: Choose any 10 to count as class skills. / Ranks per Level: 6 + Int modifier
1st - Skill Emphasis (Ex): Choose one skill; you receive a +3 competence bonus on all checks made with the chosen skill. This bonus does not allow you to make checks for a trained only skill if you have no ranks in the skill.
2nd - Deceptive, Educated, or Meticulous (see below)
3rd - Charm (Ex): You get a +3 competence bonus on all Charisma based skill checks.
Earth Expert
BAB: As Pathfinder Expert
HD: As Pathfinder Expert (max HP per HD)
Saves: As Pathfinder Expert
Skills: Choose any 12 to count as class skills. / Ranks per Level: 8 + Int modifier
1st - Skill Focus (any skill)
2nd - Great Fortitude, Iron Will, or Lightning Reflexes
3rd - Empathy: You a knack for being sensitive to the feelings and thoughts of others without having those feelings and thoughts communicated in any objectively explicit manner, which provides you with a +3 bonus on checks involving interaction skills (Bluff, Diplomacy, Handle Animal, Intimidate, Perform, and Sense Motive), provided you spend 1 round observing the target prior to making the skill check.
Earth Warrior
BAB: As Pathfinder Warrior
HD: As Pathfinder Warrior (max HP per HD)
Saves: As Pathfinder Warrior
Skills: Choose any 7 to count as class skills. / Ranks per Level: 4 + Int modifier
1st - Bonus Combat Feat
2nd - Improved Initiative, Toughness or Weapon Finesse
3rd - Brawl (Ex): You receive a +2 competence bonus on your unarmed attack rolls and your unarmed strike deals damage equal to 1d8 + your Strength modifier.
Meticulous
You are thorough and painstakingly complete.
Benefit: You gain a +2 bonus on all Linguistics and Perception checks.

What else we got people?

No worries, like I said, I'm hoping to get a group of 8 characters. This gives people plenty of time to create characters. I also need a little time to the get campaign organized.
Also I need to look over all character submissions and in equipment . That could take a half a day each.
This campaign will get off the ground. That's a promise, and I never break my promises!

That's not much to go on. I'dprefer if everyone would at least give me three paragraphs of character history/background. It will make it easier to assign equipment.
The paragraphs to have to be very long, just enough to cover the basics.
Also, please include the text of the Empathy class feature in the the character sheet somewhere.

just curious; is this a joint Corporate/Military project; like for example; Ratheon; Grumman; Boeing and many other have military contracts and do research on secure military sites which would allow some military tech and soilder types to get sucked in...just a thought; be a bit Star Gate-ish heeh.
I am interested but my knowledge of Pathfinder is fairly small other than I was a subscriber to the first three publications.

Regardless of which route I go (corporate invention or natural phenomenon) the group will need muscle to survive straight out. Military type backgrounds won't be excluded as character submissions.

You can find the Pathfinder SRD here and here. That should help you brush up on the rules. Plus if there is anything that confuses you, I'll do my best to answer your questions.
|
|

Well, there is a SRD, but the only really big difference is the skill system. (You don't get four times the standard amount of points at first level, you just get +3 bonus to class skills you put points into, class and cross-class skills cost the same)
There are a few changes in some feats, but overall it's easy to understand if you understand 3.5.
EDIT: Or you could, you know, just look at the GM's post right above mine.

Think about this, what really is a spellcaster? If I had to use modern terms to describe them, I'd call them reality hackers. They 'hack' the natural laws of physics to produce a desired effect. Most 'spells' would be 'hacks'.
So, 'Gate' would be a hack to create a wormhole between worlds, no matter how far apart they are from each other in superspace.

Great. That leads to another question. Would you allow the artificer class from Tome of Secrets? I'm thinking i will play an engineer (expert) and i think the artificer is a cool class wich would fit well with an engineer in a fantasy world.

I'm not too fond of the Tome of Secrets classes, but I want my players to be happy. Are you familiar with Eberron? There is a prestige class called the Renegade Mastermaker which makes the PC more like a living construct.
I'm going to rework the ToS Artificer a bit, giving it some of the Renegade Mastermake class features and abilities. If the changes are too drastic for your taste I'll allow you and everyone else that is interested to use *only* the Artificer class from ToS.
