Anyone up for taking 5 minutes to roll up a character and going old-school?
I'd be interested. I only have Labyrinth Lord myself but since the others are free I'd be willing to try any of them. The oldest edition I got to play was 2nd but I've been trying to talk some of my friends into trying the retro systems for the last couple of months now without much success.
You know, this is exactly what I need right now...a chance to play in a game that appeals to my old-school sensibilites, with a quality DM. Just what the doctor ordered. Color me extremely interested.
The only rules system you mentioned that I've read, Fabes, is Basic Fantasy. But I'd be willing to have a look at any of them, especially if it's free.
The first character that pops into my head is a very traditional dwarven fighter, but I suppose that depends partly on how character creation will be handled. (Which is to say, can we assign stat rolls as desired, or do they have to be in order? Now that would be truly classic.)
I am tempted by rolling them in order. :D Hard-core old-school. It would be interesting. Several of the clones (if not all of them) allow mulligans of some kind.
Quality DM? Oh, you mean me? Thanks! I'm flattered.

I'd be up for it. Brings back memories of when you prayed to roll well enough to finally play a paladin.
4 is good, I think I'll set a max of 6 players. I'll decide on which system (although of course they are extremely inter-changeable) and house rules after this weekend.
Setting will probably be Northern European faux-medieval, and the adventure I'm thinking of running is 'Bone Hill', though that may change.
I've been sitting hard on my hands since you posted this. There really is enough on my plate with concocting the further adventures of Spellguard and Blight, but ... so nostalgically tempting ...
I remember only too well turning up to my first D&D sessions with a whole sheet of characters pre-rolled. Most of them managed to get killed somewhere around the first corridor.
Mind you we had an evil DM ...
... and now we've got Fabes ...

Okay - - - I admit that I cannot even define a PBP....? Can someone fill-in an 'ol timer?
I've been acquaintances with Fabes for almost 4 years, and I'm a fan of retro-clones. I am currently running an OSRIC 2.0 game, and am familiar with First Edition, so I can jump into S&W or whatever. I just don't know what the time commitment is, and whether this is like a fantasy grounds thing, virtual table top, do I use a headset, etc. Or is this litterally an internet version of the 'ol play-by-post? Is there a chat room or is this on PAIZO.
Man, I sound so dumb about this ..... can you fill me in. Thanks!

Internet version of play-by-post.
Time commitment varies - pace usually set by DM, but generally a post every couple of days is the norm. Some (myself included) get fretful and querulous if their players don't check in daily, others, not so much.
Game takes place on the Play-by-Post forum.
Character setup, rule wrangling and such takes place in the Play-by-Post Discussion forum.
I've played every edition of D&D except Original/White Box, so this should be interesting. After a very quick glance at the rules, I'm leaning towards elven adventurer.

What's the non-internet version of play-by-post? Sticking index cards onto a corkboard with thumbtacks?
Back in the day they had play by postal mail. Never tried it. On the continental U.S. it takes around three to four days to get from coast to coast. With a DM acting as the "hub" for messages, a turn would take a week or more. Today, some of the slower play-by-posts go at that rate.
Cool, I was thinking of going Norse with it, so that would work.
Interesting choice. BTW, there is a link for a Viking themed cleric, the Northern Godi, that can also employ rune magic (though gaining runic powers comes at some personal cost) at The S&W Companion: Resources.

I realize I'm responding to something you posted in May. But I came across this line, and wanted to say I appreciate both the sentiment and the phrasing.... very cool.

Gabra (one of the PCs) is a Godi. I leapt on that when I found it and it was one of the inspirations for the game.

Just out of interest, have you been following the game thread? The adventure is The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh... although it has acquired its own lovely patina of oddness.
