May I ask how that happened or does it not explain? Is there a build up or does it just seem to come out of no where?
Well it is adventure #17 of the AP so I'm sure there is some build up. I don't have a DDI subscription and it doesn't explain how it happened on Facebook.
Okay, I've got a subscription. I haven't read the entire AP, but I've looked over the last couple adventures...here's what I gather...
Spoiler:
Tiamat started a ritual 1000 years ago that is supposed to cause the death of an immortal (i.e. a god). At the end of the previous adventure (not the latest adventure), that ritual was realized. While it is supposed to be a "shock" moment, the PCs did spend the adventure learning about the ritual and has some warning that Tiamat was using it on Bahamut.
However, the next adventure gives the impression that there may be a way to undo the death. They are very cryptic, but they say that a certain girl's powers and a certain artifact may be able to rectify the disaster.
What does this mean for canonical fluff? I noticed that when it comes to adventures, the designers aren't worried about how events affect canon. In the Prince of Death adventure (more spoilers ahead), the PCs have a chance to kill Orcus. They go on to say that while this may affect a person's campaign, it won't affect future publications. Whether Bahamut stays dead in the SoW or not may not have any affect outside that adventure path or the campaigns of those running it. There is no official campaign world, just aids to your campaign world.
see, thats what i love about 4th ed. no canon, or at least canon doesnt drive stories. what happens at the table stays at the table. none of this "i read in the 3rd book of the 5th series of x npc that y npc killed the last member of h clan. so we couldnt possibly have been up against h clan. they were wiped out 5 book years before that encounter happened.
way to go points of light.
i am a subscriber, but i havent been reading every word, i have been downloading the magazines, but not necessarily reading them.
Spoileromitted is rather useless, as gods go, and killing it for a reason that makes sense (assuming the reason does make sense) would be no loss. Its portfolio is fighting its enemies and...um...not much else. Good because you kick evil in the face because they're on Team Evil is pretty weak.
@Whimsy Chris:
Well, that particular god (not the Spoileromitted from the OP) has been killed at least once or twice now in canon, and it's practically a part of his portfolio now.
I would have imagined that this would have been revealed long ago. This is the sort of event that I would think would be kinda of nice to tell the DMs at the beginning of the campaign.

I think they were worried about players getting ahold of the information so it doesn't become the big wtf moment in the campaign.
Yeah, I bet he has one of those level 30 epic destiny features where once per day, when reduced to 0 hit points, he returns 3 rounds later at full hit points because it was all a dream or some s&@# like that. ;)

Yeah, but as far as premade campaigns go, I think that is sort of unavoidable and hiding it only inhibits the DM who doesn't really know what is going on.

I'm not playing 4th, but I saw this on Facebook and I was pleased. My Queen finally dealt with an annoying nat of a God. I hope it's canon and it stays that way.
Everything that occurs in an adventure is limited to the scope of an individual campaign. WotC mentions this at the end of the Prince of Undeath adventure; if the PCs manage to slay Orcus, then Orcus is gone in that campaign.
This does not mean that the demon is gone in every world; and it certainly would not apply to my man Bahamut.
