Christmas Special Spoiler

Spoiler:
Well Looks like the Cybermen are back for the Christmas special... I hate Cybermen episodes :-(

Season 4 Finale Spoiler and question about Season 5

Spoiler:
Wonder who is going to be the Companion for Season 5... Think it will be the Professor River Song from Forest of the Dead?

who? what? where? I'm still concerned that Kylie got offed during the Christmas special aboard the SPACE TITANIC. Definatly an insurace job.

Curse you Doctor! I hope you get reincarnated as a twelve year old. Se how hard it is to reach the big lever at the top of the console then.

Shirley David Tennant is a 12 year old, and none too tall too?

Poor Australians... you may be months behind, but at least you're still a week ahead of the kiwis... and Canada doesn't get series 4 until September!

Paizo Employee (Technical Director)

Oh... also, "Series 5" is supposed to refer to the 2010 run; before we get there, we have a run of four specials (Christmas 2008 plus three more in 2009).

For a smart aleky comment like that I hope Davros winds up wearing Tennants face for a mask. Then you'll see some scary ass Doctor Who.

"But Rose, I love you still...Bwahahah!"
WhrrrrrrHHHR.
"Darn. Motivator jammed. Rose? Honey? A little push?"

I want a new Doctor Who now! (anyone but James Nesbitt please)

Unfortunately (most, possibly all of) the specials next year are RTD's not Steven Moffat's, so rather than setting up S5 they may well be more likely to either wrap up some of RTD's lose ends or be the sort of clever/indulgent set pieces RTD is prone to.

Given how disappointing the S4 finale was -- from the poor handling of the non-regeneration that hardly got the ep off to a great start, to the nearly-but-not teasing the Donna is going to die before having her go in a nearly-but-not dead fashion that dragged the episode to its concludion -- I fear the 2009 specials will be a selection of clever/indulgent set pieces fashioned with the intention of creating his pièce de résistance.

But here we run into the problem -- for the last four season's RTD's already had all the big episodes, the season openers, finales, and xmas specials, he's had plenty of opportunities to create a masterwork but he has consistently failed to come close to SM's "The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances", "Blink", "The Girl in the Fireplace", or most recently "Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead". RTD just seems to chuck around a few clever-potentially-interesting ideas then stumble towards a deus ex machina resolution via somebody trying to blow up London/the Earth/the Universe.

S4 has finished, although there are things that haven't been resolved there's nothing that *has* to be wrapped up, but there are potentially 5 stories to be told between now and the start of S5 -- these could be used to lay the foundations of S5, but all evidence so far suggests that most if not all will be RTD stories not SM ones (certainly I believe the first 3 at least are). There's a blank-ish slate at the moment, there's little reason for SMs work on S5 not to start with some/most of the specials

I actually like the Season Finale...

I remember hearing something like that...

It is because David is doing a Theater Show with Patrick Stewart right?

Yep... grumble grumble.

Not only do I have to wait another eleven or so weeks to see what you guys are on about then I get stuck getting Specials 6 months later than they air!!!

Stupid Australian TV Stations. =(

Considering it got an audience Appreciation Index of 91 (where anything in the 80s is considered very good, and indices in the 90s are pretty much unheard of outside of specialty programming with small, targeted audiences), most people *loved* the season finale.

I did.

Only those Canadians who get their television via the CBC. Quite a sizeable percentage of us know how to use modern technology.

Yep... Tennant is going to play Hamlet with Stewart as King Claudius (IIRC)

well...

Spoiler:
we now know that Jenny'll be returning for another appearance...

One of the things that might help keep Tennant around is possibly the return of Georgia Moffett, who was the primary guest star in last season's "The Doctor's Daughter." Moffett is set to make a return in the fifth season already, something that will put a smile on Tennant's face since he is now dating her.

Does anyone know if the classic "Doctor Who" series (Doctors 1-7) is currently being shown anywhere on American TV? Seems like a long time since I've seen it anywhere other than on DVD/videotape.

I'd think Sci-Fi or BBC America would be all over it, at least for daytime filler programming, considering the success of the new series. Or are they afraid people who only know the new series will find the old shows ridiculous?

Krypter wrote:

I'm right there with you. God bless the interweb. I personally liked that finale though i did find the not-quite-regenerating thing to be a bit pulled outta nowhere. and the donna part to be a bit dragged out at the end. but I thought it did a decent job considering that it "had" to somehow top the previous three finales in terms of big-ness. and the whole part about the doctor's army, while i knew it was coming, still floored me a bit.

(incidently, I may be the only one but i didn't really enjoy the silence in the library or the forest of the dead. but that may be more personal taste then anything else. I much preferred Midnight, but i've always been a sucker for explorations of the psyche.)

Now, I don't hold too much hope that the series is going to keep the same momentum it's had for the past 4 years, especially with this "break" in 2009 with the smaller set of supposed specials.

and as an added side note, I rather like the cybermen. it seems like the idea of forced evolution to a robotic state keeps cropping up all over the place in the universe and the doctor can't seem to suppress it fast enough.

and to answer the op's question, I don't think it will be that person (forgot her name already). I have a gut feeling that it'll be a male, and possibly not even human. I am really hoping for an alien male. I feel the show revolves too much around earth and possible romantinc tension when compared to the older series. I still enjoy it, but I find that the variety of the older show in terms of companions could possibly benefit the show now.

Spoiler:
It is also a current wager with my brother. he thinks it'll be the doctor's daughter. I personally find that a bit contrived.

the doctor's daughter as a possible companion

Considering he's now dating her, it's very likely. Boy, Tennant sure does get around, doesn't he? He's got almost as many girlfriends as the Doctor in the show. And now we've got the unfortunate headline of "Doctor Who Dating His Own Daughter" to stare at.

I've seen a couple of articles listing that the DR. will have a couple of companions, at least for the Cyber-Christmas special, and at least one of them will be male, as for who will be in the next "Series" in 2010, well Tennat was offered $3Mill to play the part but has not as of yet said yes or no, although with his G/f being in part of the new series who knows.

It does air on some PBS stations. Have a look at This Week in Doctor Who for worldwide listings of what's airing where.

Here's a story about David Tennant and Patrick Stewart's production of "Hamlet", complete with a pic of David and Yorick.

I thought he was dating the Girl in the Fireplace....

Shows how behind the times I am.

I would like to see them change things up personally. I think Mickey should be the Doctor's new companion. Nothing like having Rose's ex-boyfriend around all the time, reminding you how you screwed up his life, to add a little drama. Although I was kinda hoping for

Spoiler:
the Doctor's clone.
Guess they fixxed that pretty well with the finale.

As I've previously said, I would like to see a male companion, but i can't really see either Mickey or the second one you mentioned. for Mickey, I dont' get the sense that he blames the doctor for anything at the end. I think it would be awkward, sure, but not the tension you're probly thinking. and for the second person you mentioned, could you imagine the increased production costs and time? I can't imagine it'd be much fun for Tennent, and I think part of the fun of Doctor Who is having two (or more) completely differant people stuck together in time and forced to see through each other's eyes.
...
or maybe i'm giving the writers too much credit and this idea too much thought...

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Mickey turns up as a regular on the next series of "Torchwood", to help them deal with their current... staffing shortage.

Andrew Crossett wrote:

I had considered that. Since he was last seen walking off with Jack and Martha, it's a strong possibility. I know that there are rumors that Martha will be back on Torchwood as a permenate member this time.

See, that does make sense to me. He's been exposed to too much wierdness to go back to having a normal life, and there has always been a sort of playful banter between Mickey and Jack (I think. it's been a while since i rewatched all the episodes), so I can see that working.

edit: Aah! David, somehow you managed to change your avatar in the minute between me hitting add new post and hitting submit post. it was disconcerting.

Martha (well the actress) has jumped ship and wont be appearing in Torchwood now. RTD was a bit PO'd over it so I've read in our daily rags.

Mickey will likely appear. Torchwood is going to fill the 'family centered entertainment' (Saturday night spot) in place of Dr Who and will be rebooted as a very different beast. (Another rumour but seems likely.)

Yuck. One of the best things about Torchwood was it's dark and gritty and adult stories. Family friendly is not a good move (I know my wife will have her interest in the show drop. She only casually watches Dr Who, but can't wait for new Torchwood episodes.)

Yes—Freema has been signed to play the lead prosecutor on the new series Law & Order: London.

On the other hand, series 3 of Torchwood is apparently only going to be 5 episodes, so maybe she can squeeze it in...

Anyone else call their Apple Time Capsule a TARDIS? I even use a TARDIS icon from the Doctor Who Icon Set for Mac.

Very nerdy, I know.
