I thought about posting this on the music boards but this seemed more appropriate.
I want to start up a cyberpunk campaign within a near future and was starting to think of a nice playlist to have in the background. I have so far chosen the Bionic Commando Rearmed OST, and I'm gonna pick up som rammstein CDs.
So what else. I want heavy techno with punk influences sort of. If you can please post links to videos with the music so I can check. I have no problem buying new CDs just to get a good playlist.
No undergound bands please, I want music I can acctually find and buy in a normal music-store (if they even exist any more).
Ministry works well too. Skinny Puppy for mood music as well. for something with a cleaner sound the Blade soundtrack works well. Same for Swordfish's soundtrack.
To go off the beaten track, look up stuff from Orgy, cut.rate.box, Atari Teenage Riot (a german punk band with DJ mixing sound like what you're looking for), Frontline Assembly (a personal favorite of mine), Projekt Pitchfork, Autechre (moody stuff), Coil (soundtrack to Hellraiser 2 anyone?), and maybe some Newlydeads in there too.
And for a good club scene, you still can't beat Lords of Acid.
I'd say anything with Industrial or Electric Body Music (EBM) themes to it are good. As my entire CD collection is motivated by cyberpunk, here are some suggestions:
Voivod (their early stuff, like Dimension Hatross, or Nothingface) search on Amazon MP3, and you'll get some good samples. Also youtube has good videos
Front Line Assembly - many many good songs...try this one
Front 242 (especially 06:21:03:11 UP EVIL!)
Headhunter is one of my favs.
Thanks guys, seems like I have alot to chew trough. I have heard of some of the bands you've listed but since this kind of music isn't my normal scene this helps alot.
The X-Files Movie OST: Heir to the series’ endless conspiracy, GMs can find in this soundtrack a sense of quiet urgency with brief outbursts of desperation.
The Matrix OST: Both OST and music based on the movie being fine works and giving a proper ambience. While Rob Dougan did an O.K job with the Matrix: Reloaded OST, I personally preferred the “music inspired on the movie” disc, having more soul and overall feeling.
The Fight Club OST: By the Dusk Brothers, the self-destructive nihilism of the movie is well portrayed on every single track of this fine work.
The Fifth Element OST: By Eric Serra. While the movie is a lighthearted work, the OST does a very serious work in ambienting it. GMs wanting to inject the sci-fi feeling will do well in using it.
Soundgarden, Superunknown: Cyberpunk's Nihilism and grunge go hand in hand.
Ghost in the Shell OST: For a more quiet sense of pace, this piece by Yoko Kanno is undeniably good for moments of introspection and the overall “alone in the crowd” feeling. While the OST from the TV series (Stand Alone Complex) is of a considerable lighter atmosphere and leans towards techno-pop, it’s still very good and worth checking.
