uh I'm shocked. My first and only response is and I quote, "Is this real?" I honestly have no idea......*scratches head*. I'm glad I'm not having anything to do with that stuff over there anymore. It disturbs and upsets me to see just how far the official DnD has fallen from its former glory. Very very low. If it wasn't for paizo I'd have no source for new material. Well other than myself of course.
I don't know, I don't mind it that much. It doesn't excite me (especially with those shoes), but I do think that this is an excessive response to this competition.
(Of course the first thing to pop into my head for a design is silly halfling feet shoes. As in the image on them makes them look like bare hobbit feet.)

Hey, all I was saying is that it's obvious that WotC has decided to turn D&D "trendy" by using social mechanisms and popularity contests typically reserved for individuals of a different demographic than myself.
Thus, with the changes to the rules, and the "we want to be hip, and damnit, we'll do anything to do it" marketting of WotC - I am not their target audience.

Yeah, though ridiculous tie in products have been around since TSR mismanaged themselves out of existence. I really wish Gygax would have had more control over TSR, especially after reading about all the inner conflicts back in the day.
That said, WotC already lost my money by releasing a miniatures skirmish game as an RPG.

I pay good money to paizo for their books and this is their forum not yours. I can post whatever I want around here. Shove off and get your own forums if you want absolute control. If you find a poster bothers you, or is rude, lies, or simply annoys you sometimes the best thing you can do is simply pretend not to see their posts. Eventually they get tired of being ignored and leave your posts alone.

You really should not respond to Scott, he's not worth your time, ignore him it's best for all. Other posters see him for what he is so no response is even needed.

Uh, why are you shocked? D&D has sold lots of similar products to the masses in the past (ala pre-WotC). There's an anniversary issue of Dragon magazine that showcases various products aimed at the non-rpg masses. (I don't have the issue with me at work, so I can't provide examples at the moment.)

I could use a new pair of Chuck Taylors. Wizards has produced some darned fine D&D art over the years. Depending on the design(s?) eventually produced, I could imagine wearing a pair of shoes that had a good illustration on them and didn't scream "I AM A CORPORATE BILLBOARD."

Absolutely. I don't think that pointing out that others' reactions to a pretty innocuous (and, to be honest, kind of fun and cool) contest were unreasonable is in any way reprehensible. I mean, we have people openly insulting an entire game company (and I expect Scott Rouse would probably be pretty hurt by some of the things seen here), but predictably it's the people who shine light on that behavior that are lashed out at the hardest.

Scott Rouse posted a few examples of designs from a previous (similar) contest they did for Magic: The Gathering. Some of them look pretty sweet. If I were a Magic player, I'd consider picking them up when it came time for a new pair. You can see the designs he posted in this thread.

Well it smells like a marketing ploy intentioned to aid in pushing dnd to the young casual gamer crowd. Like I said, an attempt to make it palatable to the new players weaned on modern ps3/xbox games. A visualization: a young child is sitting on the floor near you and you are snapping your fingers at it and saying look at me, come on look here. Trying to keep its focus on you. This is why I don't approve. It's debasing to the real players. Real players don't need strange marketing ploys to keep their attention and it shows how far the game has fallen that WOTC feels like it has to resort to these things to keep the mass publics attention. I also perfectly understand that these things have happened before, history is funny that way. Lots of silly stuff happened with them(TSR and friends) also. I still didn't approve.

Fair enough. As you probably know, I don't participate in these threads often, I just remember you mentioning how big a Paizo fan you are (after all, it's why you're here, right?), and was curious about your general statement about Paizo fans, since I assumed you should be included in such a statement, and, as you indicated, you consider yourself to be so.

well my real player comment comes from the idea that dnd is attempting to appeal to the Wii "casual gamer" crowd with its new 4.0 and marketing as exemplified by this shoe idea. Anyway by real player I meant one who actually plays a lot and enjoys the game and social aspects thereof vs one who was "suckered in" by the marketing and such and only plays because he does, and constantly need something to hold his attention, usually they stop playing after a few sessions. Thats what I meant.

My initial post may have come across as a bit over the top because I didn't preface my whole thought process into the mix ... but some of the responses are just epic in their over-reaction.
If I was a sociologist I'd be having a hayday watching this social experiment implode on itself!
