Here’s some real punk for you;
FU old people!, anyone who grew up and survived punk aren’t real punks because you grew up and joined the society you were rebelling against. Punk is a state of mind not a narrowly defined type of music and FU for trying to make it that way.
The punk bands you remember from your rebel youth can never happen again because those same bands that were giving the finger to the establishment are now owned and promoted by the establishment and you have become the establishment. Any band you listen to that doesn’t measure up to your youthful ideas of punk is punk because punk is the discarded and spurned music of the young and now you are old you no longer understand this.

My point has much more to do with the "motivational" that Shiny posted than anything else.

I have classes to get to, and b). the city of Savannah not only classifies Straight Edge (which is NOT a set of rules) as a gang, but has some f&!#ing bizarre ordnances regarding who's allowed into what show, and as a result, I'm boycotting the entire quote-unquote scene.
But, yeah, there is still good music out there.

Probably. The copy I have is labeled "album." Given how far back it was in my collection I'd estimate I haven't played it in probably a dozen years or so.
I'm listening it to now, and I gotta say, I think my positive impressions of the record revolve mostly around the lyrics. "Anger is an energy," etc. The recording itself sounds incredibly dated/eighties -- it could be a Duran Duran album sonically.

My local oldies radio station plays a lot of the old punk bands as part of it's line up, no DKs or Surf Punks though.

Well this thread in particular is pretty easy to pin. Any time you bring up anything about punk being dead, or whatever, and there is anyone that has any kind of connection with it, there's always gonna be a heavy debate.
At least this one hasn't gotten too rabid.
My girlfriend said she saw the guy from Twilight wearing a painted leather with The Subhumans on it, so umm.... yeah, it seems there's a trend there that I don't like.I don't care for it much, either. Especially when a girl wearing a Specials shirt (I presume from Hot Topic) came into the deli I manage and asked who performed the song that was playing (we run my mp3 player through the system, radio sucks).

There wasn't any kind of coherent theme to any of the bands around prior to 1976. Even if there were, though, you're saying that the moment a member of a 'movement' (or whatever) goes mainstream the entire movement is over, which is silly, though maybe not as silly as giving quite that much power to the Sex Pistols.

I'm just saying- and keep in my that at 37, in my heart of hearts I'll always consider myself a punker, so I'm not talking from some academic, outsider point-of-view- at about seventeen I realized that the "punk" milieu was all about theatrics and Halloween costumes. To me it was about rejecting everything and more akin to social terrorism. It offended the sensibilities of the age because it didn't embrace the false utopia being pushed in the late 70 early 80s. It was about doing the things you're not supposed to do or at least all the things you weren't suppose to like - being an upstanding citizen an all.I think like many things, after some time it became stagnant and got co-opted by leftist as a social "movement" and then some years later when it became acceptable and eventually more mainstream (marketable). It wasn't meant to live, in fact it was probably stillborn - we just took some time looking at its corpse - then it was all over.

Let's see, if we just look at the proto-punks (MC5, the Stooges, etc), they weren't trying to start much of anything. Later, the Ramones just wanted to play straight up rock and roll without the pretenses of arena rock, again, they weren't trying to be anything. The Cramps were just being silly.
Blame the Brits for turning it into a fashion/political "movement". they were always way too self conscious about everything anyway. Well, specifically blame Malcolm McLaren. He was into creating scenes (New York Dolls, Sex Pistols) and only cared about the marketing. Heck, I'm glad the Chili Peppers said no thanks to his management, it staved off their sell out moment for another six years or so...
