I have to say that this is one of the few movies I have seen in a long time and it was not only a great film, but I saw it in IMAX 3-D (a first for me) and the 3-D effects were astounding!
I literally felt like I was looking at a real environment with things happening at different depths, to the point that there is a scene with particles of ash floating in the air that I had to try to track one until it floated out of the screen-frame to tell that there wasn't some dude sprinkling stuff from overhead. Incredible. I liked S. Weaver in it and the male lead was a very good actor also.
Go see it, and if you have an IMAX nearby-YOU NEED TO SEE IT THERE!

Yup, couldn't quite get the name to form in my brain(the same reason I didn't attempt to spell Ms. Weaver's first name;P) and didn't feel like goggling it.
He is a really good actor, as were most of the actors-even the minor ones. The only one I really didn't like was the head marine. I thought he was too over-the-top.

Didn't see it. Not that I didn't want to...just that where I live our theaters SUCK [insert naughty appendage word here]. My wife was so thoroughly disgusted by the crappy-quality of the film when we went to see the 'new' star trek movie that she walked out after 5 minutes. Don't get me started on the sound system...it's like having some guy stand right in front of you crackling celophane. They aren't getting any of my money until they fix everything. When did the 'new' Star Trek come out? That was the last time I've been to the theater.
Besides, I'm becoming quite content sitting on a comfy couch watching a DVD on a big screen TV with 5.1 surround sound...and hitting the pause button when the pop/water/beer makes its way just can't be denied. :)

I had the exact same thought when I saw it!
Having seen it, I agree with TheChozyn. It breaks no new territory in terms of plot but it does look good. I would say the 3D was overrated - you don't really notice that a 2D movie isn't 3D, and I stopped noticing that Avatar wasn't a normal 2D after a while. SO I have to question whether it was really worth it. Plus I had a terrible headache for the rest of the day after watching it. But it is spectacular, nonetheless.
Some movies reach a certain level of hype that I resist going to see them. Never saw E.T. for over ten years, and when someone who was shocked that I hadn't seen it finally sat me down to watch it, I was like, 'meh.' Haven't seen Titanic, for the same reason.
But I think Avatar succeeds at what it does, which is look really pretty.
I'm able to compartmentalize my enjoyment. Having seen The Hidden Fortress didn't make me unable to appreciate Star Wars, having read Tolkein didn't prevent Jackson's Lord of the Rings from blowing me away, having read comics for 30+ years didn't leave me so jaded and world-wearied that I couldn't love the Spider-Man and Iron man movies, and having ridden the Pirates of the Caribbean ride doesn't prevent me from enjoying watching Johnny Depp swagger and sashay all over the place like a drunken transvestite.
Avatar's story may not be all shocking and new, but having seen Pocahontas doesn't make me unable to enjoy it.
District 9 is waaaay better than Avatar.

Put me in the "haven't seen it" camp.
I generally care more for the story than they special effects and the story doesn't really excite me. Cameron doesn't really excite me as a director lately either. Titanic in particular I thought was pretty bad. The sinking of the ship was moving (I liked the band's final song) and well done. The other three hours worth of movie was pretentious and badly written.
I also don't get out to the movies very often (a big screen tv, a dvd player, netflix and a roku provides me with way more movie enjoyment than I really should engulge in.) The last movie I went to see was Twilight (with the wife) and that was well over a year ago.

IMO, SEEing the movie isn't what the movie's about. It's more about LOOKING at the movie, which was made for the big screen in 3D. Visually, it accomplishes everything you would want from a SCI-FI FX tour de force. Other than that, it's a mediocre movie made very well. Watching it DVD isn't really going to give you any frame of reference for the most significant aspects of the movie.
Actually, I've seen it twice, because I saw it once with a friend when my kid couldn't make it, and then I had to take my kid to see it, to be fair. The second time I saw it, I got to enjoy some of the more subtle aspects of the film, like what an enjoyable scenery-chewing hamball Col Quaritch is. All I saw the first time was the stock character he's drawn from. The second time, I got to enjoy the actor's performance a little more.
I haven't seen Avatar either. We actually did try, but my wife got a headache from the 3D before the trailers were even done. We got our money back.
District 9 was such a tremendous disappointment. We rented it for a buck from Redbox and felt ripped off. Decent special effects, but the script was awful.
