That's nothing. The other night I dreamed that aliens stole my car, but my key fit one of the company cars so me and my students loaded up to gank my car back from the aliens. They ended up capturing us but we managed to discover that the whole thing was an elaberate ruse created by Jason Alexander and Jerry Seinfeld to con everyone into thinking Earth was being invaded while they secretly manipulated things so they could win a million dollars from a contest sponsered by a laundry soap company.

I found a single word translator here.
I looked a few things up and tried to get a feel for basic sentence structure from the example sentences given in a few of the word translations.
I came across some Swahili when I was reading about linguistics, and from what I know I wouldn't recommend trying to translate whole sentences, the construction is significantly different from English...
The words I know in Swahili are slightly more useful than those of Jade, mainly politeness phrases: Hujambo? - Sijambo (How are you? - I am fine), bwana (mr), bibi (mrs), mzee (old respected man)...
As for the topic, I do agree that time and situation you see the movies are important on how they connect to you, as is also what you expect from movies in general or that specific movie...it is in turns funny and frustrating to go see message boards in IMDb to read the threads by people who obviously are missing the point, looking for, say, realistic stories or naturalistic acting in movies which stylistically veer away from those things...
I am quite willing to say that 2001: Space Odyssey, Gladiator and some other much-appreciated movies which I don't like look pretty, so if a viewer considers that to be important those movies offer more to them than to me. Meanwhile, I do enjoy strongly stylized, non-naturalistic films which are poison for many (this is also why I rather liked Kill Bill I and 300 while I was not wowed by Kill Bill II and Gladiator).

OK, I hafta say it, but I hated "The Matrix."
I mean, come on! 1) Why do robots care about pollution enough to use PEOPLE as a power source? Build lots of really polluting nuke or fossil fuel plants! They won't suffer from a bad environment! 2) Assuming they do, why do they give a flying leap about keeping us happy? We're vegetables! Hook up an IV and you're good to go! 3) Woah! KEANU CAN'T ACT!!!!
Truly, that was the most pretentios pile of dragon doo-doo I've ever seen (I never saw the second and third, simply 'cuz the first was SO BAD!)

2001 for me was an haunting ambient experience. Think of people who saw that when there were no other films that made space look as quiet and lonely as it truly is. You see it now, after forty years of filmic expansion on the theme, and it can easily seem like its on valium.
Gladiator, 13th warrior... had a good, breezy time.
I was enjoying Kill Bill 1 until about 15 minutes in and then not at all. The sequel did nothing for me. However, so many people I know thought that mass battle after mass battle almost for its own sake was the best thing ever. I'm not dumb for disliking the film, and they're not dumb for liking it. You just need to know what you're looking for in a film. Then, the one you want to see is easier to find and you'll waste less time losing life at 90 minutes a time to movies not to your taste.
That all said, sometimes films just have bad direction, poor sound, or screenplay logic holes you could drive a moon through, all net... and IMO, those films are just bad and probably aren't considered 'best movies' for the purpose of this thread's focus. However, even then, if you saw one of those poorly fashioned films as a kid and it transported you to someplace special, it stands above analysis. eg, I saw the third Brendan Fraser Mummy movie yesterday. Painful. Not every element, because some were fun, but the film as a whole. Now in 20 years someone's going to bump into me and tell me it changed their life as a kid, and that they've lived by the film's creedo ever since.
My vote would go to every single "Merchant/Ivory" film ever made.
Great as sleeping aids. Lousy as entertainment.
Actually, I lump a lot of pretentious "period pieces" in this steaming pile of offal.
I forget who said it above, but I agree that Oliver Stone is a hack.
Casablanca deserves some slack. They went through a couple of directors and script rewrites while making that movie, so the actors had NO IDEA what was supposed to happen, which actually kind of highlighted Ilsa's waffling throughout the movie.
"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" sucked as well. WAY too over the top. I know this isn't generally considered a "good" film, but the "cool" kids going on about it gets annoying. I think "Where the Buffalo Roam" is a much better Hunter S. Thompson based film.

I love Titanic, in fact it and LOTR are my favorite flicks of all time. Kate Winslet's nude scene should counteract any annoyance she might have given!
I also love Tarantino stuff, Kill Bill Part One being my favorite. Love Braveheart, love Gladiator. Love Saving Private Ryan (not to be confused with the less well-known Saving Ryan's Privates!)
Now as for what I hate? Hate Merchant Ivory stuff. Hate The English Patient. Hate flicks like Legends of Bagger Vance, Legends of the Fall, A River Runs Through It, Seven Years in Tibet. Ghandi, Tess, Out of Africa. All the houty touty stuff.
I do hate most Kubrick films (2001, Clockwork Orange, AI).
I also hate Whoopi Goldberg movies (had to add that since my wife watches the Sister Act things and Jumping Jack Flash like 5 times a year!)
Oh, and I absolutely loathe A Christmas Story! One of the most boring and stupid movies I ever had the pleasure of watching (and never will again).
Hmm. Have to say I love a lot of movies that some people posted they hated. I think most of those movies were "love 'em or hate 'em" style cinema, particularly American Beauty. No, you aren't unenlightened Sebastian, the movie just didn't speak to you. The director's fault, not yours- and even though I love the movie, I found the bag scene to be incredibly stupid.

(Actually, I like every scene with Andre the Giant in it. But Billy Crystal and Carey Elwes both inspire me to leave the room, and since Carey Elwes is playing the main character, that renders the vast majority of the movie unwatchable to me. Oddly, I liked his performance in Kiss the Girls, so I guess it's not just 'Carey Elwes hate,' like my rabid and unabiding loathing for anything starring Tom Hanks.)
Other very popular movies I can't stand. E.T. the Extraterrestrial. I didn't see it for some ridiculous amount of time, and was finally sat down and made to watch it by someone who took great offense to my having not seen it. Yeah. Snoozefest, like pretty much every other big Spielberg movie. How anyone stayed awake through Close Encounters of the Third Kind is beyond me. The only scene that got my interest was when he made the Devil's Tower out of mashed potatoes, because I sat up and said, 'Hey, they ripped that off of Call of Cthulhu!'
Dances With Wolves also wins some sort of record for most. boring. movie. ever. The main characters horse was the only character in the movie I didn't want to be struck down by an excruciating and fatal case of Montezuma's Revenge.

If you ever want to see someone act like a PC in a movie it's Dennis Quaid and Kathleen Turner in that one. They totally walk over the rest of the people (NPCs)

That's how I felt about it when I saw the midnight showing in a small theater. I love the movie, but the audience participation gave me a massive migrane and totally killed it for me.

Watched it and guess 10 minutes into the movie that Bruce Willis ** spoiler omitted **
and I sat in utter boredom while my then-girlfriend (now wife!) enjoyed every minute of it.
I had the same problem with Shymalan's "Unbreakable" -- ten minutes in, and I knew the twist. I didn't want to know it -- but I did. I remember sitting in the theater thinking "Oh, no -- it _can't_ be that, can it? I can't be the only guy on the planet who reads super-hero comics, and knows where Sam Jackson fits into all of this, can I?
But I called it, and I had to sit through the entire film like I'd already seen it.
