Okay, observations of 2012. First it is a long movie, almost 3 hours. And it is definately an Emmerich movie, lots of explosions and destructions of recognizable landmarks. Some pretty implausable moments, but over all it is a good flick. Not only is it the mother of all disaster flicks, but it is also an excellent human drama. I don't know that I can say much more with out giving too much away. However, when the largest airplane in the world the Antanov 500 has a starring role, you know that the film is epic.

What makes me cringe about it though are the people who won't recognize it as purely entertainment. By and large it's the same crowd that thought they had learned some amazing ancient secret after reading the DaVinci Code and wouldn't shut up about it.

LOL, isn't that the same crowd that thought "300" was some sort of attempt at a historical reference? You know, cuz surely Spartans fought in their leather underwear. >.<

The review of it I heard on NPR just savaged it for being completely unbelievable and the special effects being cheesy.

I enjoyed it for what it was... the latest and greatest in SFX of blowing stuff up. Other than that, we've seen disaster movies before, nothing NEW. I'm gonna have to go with my friends first impression and say that it should've been titled Transporter 6. XD

I hope the crack fox visits the director and producer, and makes them wear littled dresses and hurts them.

This is a film that should not have been made, cause frankly, all to many people can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality. 2012's are already to common, and this frankly will not help.

You make it sound like sensationalism wasn't the whole point of disaster movies. :P

The repeatedly make mention to the irony of the "crackpots" being the ones who were right in theend.

Suggest they read Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco. Best ancient conspiracy novel ever.

Thanks for this- I thought I would be able to slip off and watch it after work today, but not if it's 3 hours or so...I'll have to rearrange my schedule and maybe watch it on a day I don't have the second job.

Thank you for saving me 10 bucks :)

I saw it last night and loved watching stuff blow up. Spectacular in that regard. The stunts were past improbable, and the dialouge was terrible. But if you went in thinking you were going to learn scientific fact, or more about the human condition, then I already pity you.

Fun movie for what it was. I am glad I saw it.

Is this a problem with the american mindset regarding movies in general? Must every movie be a taut thriller that will educate, enlighten AND eroticize(sorry, had to use another e word)? Can't some movies just be movies? Or is that expecting too much?

For some people it is.

After seeing previews and reading responses to it, I think I'll pass. I'm not big on apocalyptic movies. I suppose I had my fill of impending doom growing up in the 80s. My elementary school had a big poster up showing where the Soviets would drop their nukes on our little island of Oahu (all of thirty-something miles across); according to that poster, they'd use five. In high school I lived right across the highway from Pearl Harbor. In the case of nuclear attack, there wouldn't be much to do but go up on the roof with a lawnchair and a pitcher of margaritas and wait to be vaporized. We tended to be a bit blase about imminent destruction.

Just saw this on an IMAX screen--chair-gripping f/x! I enjoyed it for the escapist entertainment it was intended to be. I suppose my biggest qualm, after determining to suspend my disbelief, was that the President didn't perform his duty and get on the damn plane. But that's just me; most people were probably caught by the romanticism of his choice.

I'm currently reading a book about the 2012 phenonmenon right now (for those who's friended me on FB, it's on my wall). I know someone else may have said it (was it the pony?) - I wouldn't take any predictions from a civilization who couldn't even foresee their own demise. It's just the same as Dionne Warwick and her psychic friends not being able to let her know that her future was full of fail.
