Awesome, awesome book. Even the 'bit characters' were pretty fascinating, like the trio of Morituri-enhanced assassins introduced later. Up until the very end, when they seemed to get a little lazy with their ideas, it was a great book.
I particularly liked the bits of humor in the middle of the bleakness of it all, such as 'they really *do* have a Morituri with the power to mow grass perfectly!' and the Horde treasure-ship with it's plethora of Easter eggs (Captain America's shield, Galactus' helmet, etc.).
Killing off the PoV character, from whose journals we are experiencing the first six issues, so quickly, was pretty ballsy, back in the day. It was like watching To Live and Die in LA.
Never did get into this series, but I do recall seeing ads for it in Amazing Heroes. Good to know it has such a good reputation, is there a trade for it?

I quite liked it, though I stopped not long after Marathon's return. Ahead of its time. And it would definitely make a fun Champions campaign.

No trades that I know of, it went out of print before the age of trades...

According to the wiki there is a legal dispute between Marvel and Peter Gillis which will probably prevent a trade from appearing at least until it is resolved.
I loved this series when it was running and was disappointed when it was canceled (although it had gone downhill somewhat near the end). It was a bit of an emotional roller-coaster though as you learned to not get too attached to any of the early characters (like I did to Blackthorn) as their only fate was to die.
I bought the n°1 by chance while visiting the North-Eastern coast (NYC, Buffalo and then Canada) when I was 15. I loved it. I never had the opportunity to follow the story though.
I think the concept may have inspired the Juicer class in Rifts : short life, awesome power
