I haven't followed any comic book since the mid 90's and was wondering if there are any comics out there with a good jumping on point?

I'd say Guardians of the Galaxy is pretty good.

I have always been a Moon Knight fan and I LOVE the new series. I have also been enjoying Capt America since his death.

The new Thor series is pretty fantastic, though it has been out for about a year now. You can get the 10-issue collection.

I like the Project: Superpowers stuff from Dynamite. As it's a new universe, it hasn't got much backstory to build on.

Captain Britain and MI13 is also high on my list.

You could give PS238 from Good Guy Publishing a try. It's fun stuff and has web archives of the first few issues. It is black and white, which I know makes some people balk.

Invincible is good, but it's been going for almost 5 years which might be a bit much to digest in one sitting.

Most the DC stuff I'd recommend (JSA) has quite a long backstory, so probably isn't the best to try and jump into fresh.

If you're looking for non-superhero stuff, then buy Fables. Every issue and the trades. You'll love it. Actually, even if you are looking for super-hero stuff, buy Fables anyway.

What's that about then, Paul? I personally prefer non-supers stuff.

Cheers! :D

It's basically the story of a lot of fairy tales living in a borough of New York. There's a meta plot that builds towards issue 75 but at the start it's more day in the life stuff. The first story is a murder mystery with Bigby Wolf as Fabletown's police force, Rose Red as the victim and everyone (including Snow White, Beauty, Jack [of Beanstalk fame]) as a suspect.

It also features touches like Beauty and the Beast where the Beast gets more bestial when his wife isn't 100% deliriously in love with her, or Pinnochio looking for the Blue Fairy to kick her little blue ass for not letting him grow up. He's been a real boy for centuries and wants to grow up, get drunk and get laid.

It's clever and a lot of fun. I'll bring you the first couple of arcs along with V next Thursday.

Ah, thanks! I'm looming forward to this! :)

Cheers! :D

I recently started buying comics on a regular basis again earlier this year. The two titles that got me to start buying:

Invincible Iron Man (currently on issue 7): the 1st issue had multiple movie tie-in covers. The first story arc (Issues 1-6, and 7 was kinda an epiloge) was outstanding.

Captain Britain and Mi-13: I've always like the Black Knight, and seeing him on the cover of #1 was enough for me to get it. The first four issues were a Secret Invasion tie-in, and the story was kinda choppy. Since then, it's already very interesting.

Since those two, I've been picking up:

Moon Knight: really interesting developments here. They recently got a new creative team, and the last two story arcs have been really good.

Amazing Spider-Man: there was an event (One More Day) that pretty much "reset" all the Spiderman story arcs. They cancelled all the Spiderman titles except Amazing Spiderman, which now comes out three times a month. The new stories have been really good.

Captain America: Things have settled down, and the new Captain America has been accepted by the super hero community. Again, so far, really good.

Daredevil recently introduced "Lady Bullseye" and looks neat.

And my brothers claim that Ultimate Fantastic Four is the best comic out there right now, but I haven't been reading any of the Ultimate line, other than a couple of trade paperback a friend let me read.

I haven't been keeping up on any DC titles, but I've pretty much have toted the phrase "Make Mine Marvel" since I was old enough to think that was a cool thing to say. Robin looks interesting, though.

I recommend Skaar, Son of Hulk, and Runaways from Marvel.

And I try very hard to find a DC Comic to read -- Flash was the closest I could find to continally enjoyable, but then again, it has monkeys. Everything is better with monkeys...

My favorites in alphabetical order:

Booster Gold
Captain America
Daredevil
Guardians of the Galaxy
Immortal Iron Fist
Nova

Also check out any of the Thor one-shots Matt Fraction writes.

Trade paperback market has grown much bigger in last ten years, so there isn't that much of a problem anymore with finding a comic with good jump-in point...

Says one who did give up pamphlets years ago.

Thor just restarted; great art work; just changed over; you would only have like five or six comics to read then number system changes to 600; which is a double comic and the story really takes a turn; things are heating up for the Thunder God.

X Factor is pretty good, and doesn't have as much 'crossover spilling' as the rest of the X books.

You might find X-men forever and X-factor forever interesting. They're 'alternate realities' books with Claremont and Simpson, respectively working with their 90's books. Xmen forever has been some hit and miss* but I've mostly enjoyed them.

Spoiler:
I wanted to see what Claremont did with a non James Howlett Wolverine, but he killed him first issue, and I didn't like his Illyana take, it makes her heroic sacrafice in Inferno hollow.

On the DC side, they're getting ready for Brightest Day which might make it easier to get into. Teen Titans is just finishing up a Dakota storyline (I liked Static in the DCAU, so I'm interested, and Rose kicks butt) but it might lead to a 'clean' reboot.

And of course, Bruce is coming back to Batman this year...
