Greetings and well met fellow gamers. My name is Aaron and I will be playing Kveldulf Two-Cuts. I've been catching up on the story so far and you guys have a good thing going. I'm glad to have a chance to be a part of it so thank you.

My character has been loaded into my profile. I'll have a background and physical description up soon. I started with starting gold for 3rd level. I noticed that the new druid seems to be starting at 3rd level but with 1st level starting equipment. Can I get a clarification on this?

Hey there. Great profile looks good (save typo I assume class/level should read Barbarian 2 Ranger 1?). I haven't had a chance to go over it in detail but stat wise looks in order w the extra skills, feat, and so forth.

As per starting gold I neglected to think about this but I don't believe the original party has as much wealth as indicated by the DMG. Necroticbanana had the same question in the Gamer connection thread so I posted:

As per starting wealth/gear. Good question. I think 2700 might be a bit much in comparison to the original party. 1400 gp would probably be around the right mark I think. As for magical stuff, let's say max 900 of the starting gp can be made up of scrolls/potions (1-2nd level spells). Mwk gear is OK as is materials such as silver.
Assuredly, you'll come across magical items but I'd prefer them to be found through adventuring/story rather than the local Wiz-Mart. Even the scrolls/potions you possess are rare, wondrous items possibly from southern merchants, raided ships or family tradition.

Sorry if this screws up what you did for equipment. I should've said something but the starting wealth slipped my mind.

Well, I'm also here.

Hey there Davi/Ottar. Excellent had a chance to look over the profile. All seems good just when you have a chance can you add your ranks and ability/feat bonus together for your skills in case I need to roll for you. Also see note re starting wealth.

I'll be heading out shortly so may be out of touch for two days.

Alright, I have now added my equipment and totals for my skills.

(Male Human Ranger 1, Barbarian 2)

Thanks for the clarification. I've changed the typo concerning my class levels and reduced my equipment by 1300gp. I got rid of the mithral chain shirt, studded leather barding, light warhorse, and the masterwork quality on my spiked light wooden shield. All should be well now.

So had a chance to go over character a bit more. Everything is good save that you have six more skill points to use. (Druid 6+int x4=28, 4 points for knowledge, profession or craft + 7skillp lvl 1, 2=46)

Also if you have a chance feel free to flesh out the druidic society that you are a part of. Who, goals, gods etc. I probably wouldn't make them big, powerful but a regional group. Definitely something I might draw upon later. Does the 'king of the wild' refer to leadership in the organization or something else? I'm aware it refers to the prc but what is the status of bear warriors in your society?
Also no animal companion or waiting until 4th level to acquire a black bear?

I'll make sure i fix my skill points as soon as possible. i'll even start work on the druid details. As for the "king of the wild thing" it was something i just threw in last minute, delussions of grandur for the most part, so yea to ultimatly become the land and to rule it absolute (in a good way) and no he means real bear, 4 legs, claws, eats fish..he seems a bit ecentric. And yea, no real animal companions i feel quite fit the flavor, i'll see what's available in a few levels...(besides me being an animal person if it were to be killed in combat you can raise my CR against your bad guys by like 4 or 5 levels lol, there dead. ;)

I've updated my physical description and background and I must say hats off to paizo I never knew so much info could be packed into a 1 page profile. :P

ready to roll

Hey there all I'm back. Things took a little longer than expected. Anyways I still have a few things to finish up this afternoon and then I'll get the ball rolling tonight on getting the new players hooked up to the action. Looking forward to having some new blood. (meant possibly both figuratively and literally.. <evil laugh>)

Good. Also, I hope this thread will dot soon.

Spoiler:
Just jazzing from your background and to dispense with some exposition. The raiders that attacked your fishing/whaling vessel were led by none other than the infamous Uurad the Red. The raider was a pictish war chief that lost his lands in Albion's endless wars. The Pict fled to the seas where he has since made a name for himself as a raider of renown. His three warships immediately recognizable from their crimson red sails and fierce dragon prows laid waste to your boats. In the battle as you defended against the attackers a tall striking man with a fiery red beard fired the arrow that took your eye. Judging from his description you believe that man was Uurad himself. When you arrived in Raudurfoss wounded and delirious from the cold and starvation a merchant named Bolli recognized the markings of your people. The merchant generously arranged for you to be nursed back to health. Since, he has mentioned that he is due to take the season's last shipment of timber to Brattahlid. Many of his men fell ill to the pestilence that had plagued the town and he is in great need of warriors and sailors. He too has heard word that Uurad's ships lurk in the waters near Mosfell. He even suspects that the war chief may be working for Sihtric as the usurper has hired many mercenaries recently. Remembering your people who he had traded with in the past he has offered you work and passage to Brattahlid.

Spoiler:
Just to jazz off your background and to put things in motion. Recently, the head council of your order has charged you with a mission. Within the last year there has been disturbing omens and signs that have worried your kinsmen; bizarre weather, foul creatures rising from the earth and the twin peaks of Volta and Jotun shake with the earth's fury. Also, news of the strife in Mosfell and Vesturmark have been a cause of concern for some. Particularly, the figure of Carloman, Sihtric's advisor and some say sorcerer. Your order wishes to gather information and news of the kingdoms and most importantly to learn more of Carloman. To that effect, they have asked you to set out to Raudurfoss and to Brattahlid to learn the news and to speak with Halfdeane regarding Carloman learning as much as possible. Meanwhile the head of your order has set out to the deep interior of the island to confer with the Jarls of the Frost Giants. You arrived in Raudurfoss a day ago and have heard word of a merchant named Bolli who is heading out the last voyage to Brattahlid of the season. You have heard that is he like to be found at the Alf, the town's mead hall. Additionally, you were told that if you needed help in Raudurfoss that Unn, the village elder was once friends with your order and could be trusted to help a traveller in need.

Spoiler:
Just to put a few things in motion. After your escape from your former master's demise you had returned to the open road. Desirious of coin you had heard of an upcoming wedding in Raudurfoss of two noted families. Gisli, son of Unn, and head of one of the oldest families in Raudurfoss was due to be married this week. You had managed to obtain work for this auspicious occassion. However, Gisli had set out into the woods of the Darkmoon Vale in search of a cure to the pestilence that had overtaken many in the town. Last night while in the Alf, the town's mead hall, you have heard rumours that both of Unn's sons were slain in the woods under mysterious circumstances. Many speak of beguiling witchcraft and wrathful spirits. Your new situation looks bleak. You are also aware that the last boats of the season leave in the next few days for Brattahlid. You had also heard that Bolli, the merchant heading the convoy is in dire need of men as he has lost several sailors to the disease. As you have been in Raudurfoss for awhile now you recognize the old merchant and are also aware that he has a fondness for song and a good tale.

Utgaror, Ottar, Kvledulf

: You are all aware of the recent events in Raudurfoss regarding the pestilence and have heard this morning of the adventurer's successful return. You are also aware that there is to be a great celebration held in the Alf tonight.

Yep.

thought I'd ask can anyone recommend a means of editing maps for combat? The app on photobucket is horribly time-consuming and rather limited in function. I'd like to do maps but if its this much of a pain I think we'll go back to a more narrative approach (or excel spread sheets)

oh and as I mentioned I'll be away this week again with the outdoor ed class (Tues-Thurs). Do the same thing post your actions and Thord, Bjalfi will be at the bottom of the round.

Dorvarr... if I'm not mistaken, you live in Calgary, right?

Would you be interested in playing in a d20 Midnight campaign I am presently DMing? Next game will be this Friday, April 10, and would present a perfect opening for a new PC to jump in... I'm off this week, and so could meet with you anytime except Wednesday evening if you wanted to discuss PC generation.

Anyway, let me know...

Cheers!

I'm also in the Southwest, in Southwood. Two of the players live in Okotoks, one lives in the northwest near COP, and the other lives downtown. We "usually" play at my place... then again, we've only played two sessions thus far (this coming Friday will be session 3). We're all first time Midnight players/DMs, so unfamiliarity with the setting is not an issue... and so far, everyone seems to really be enjoying the game (be warned -- it's a brutal world, low magic world, rife with paranoia and despair).

I'll start up a campaign journal on this site.

If interested, send me your e-mail (or email me at xcattarinich (at) hotmail (dot) com), and I'll send you the campaign background info and other relevant links (including one to an illustrated blog).

Even if you can't make it this Friday, there might be other opportunities to slot you in in the near future.

So as I posted in the main thread sorry for the lack of flow the last two weeks. Thought it best to cut to the chase and fwd the encounter to a suitable juncture.

Will try to get things flowing again here..

Just to check in. I know that my absences kind of wrecked the initial flow but just wanted to check in and see if there is any reason for the gaps in posting. I often find that I post something but can't really add any further until some of type of action is taken. So wanted to see if there was any reason? Are people uncertain as to the descriptions, events. Not too keen on the current situation? Too much RP?, too little viking hacking mayhem? In short is there anything I can do for you as the players to speed/facilitate play?

(Male Humanoid Lurker 1/ Nerd 1)

Well, I can't seem to think of something to do, and posting "Ottarr stands there" just looks silly, so I just did nothing, waiting for someone else to do something.

I'm mostly fine with the flow so far and to second what Ottar posted, I was very close to a "Stands behind Vladimir looking menacing" post but haven't really gotten around to it. Kveldulf is not personally involved with this situation. He is amused and somewhat impressed by Vladamir so he's basically waiting to see what happens next. I'm happiest with a post a day schedule but I understand that busy lives sometimes get in the way. And... I'm more than fine with heavy rp. I got hack n' slash out of my system about circa 1994.

(Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2))

I'm having fun... I worry a bit about forgetting people and events (when making a post I generally keep about 5 tabs open- one on the current post, one on my character stats, one on previous pages of posts, one on Invisible Castle, and the last on the actual new post), but I'm loving the feel of the game.

I do worry a bit, though, that I'm overshadowing everyone else. If that happens, just beat me down a little, hey? If I start monologuing on, just have action interrupt me.

I'm happy with everything -- I was especially impressed with some of your recent descriptive posts. I'm more likely to get bored if there's too much combat and not enough RPing, so the current pace is fine (long combats can become a real drag, especially in PbP). I'm very much intrigued with what is happening to the earl and hersir.. Keep up the good work!

If I'm slow sometimes, it's just because life/work are really busy.

Nah, I wouldn't worry about it, you're playing your character as he should be played, and I don't think you're overshadowing at all... Right now, you're driving the action, and I think that's fine (and we wouldn't want Ragnarr to be out front parleying, now would we).

Cheliax (RPG Superstar 2010 Top 32, 2011 Top 16)

I'm totally okay with the pace. I was out of town this past week, so maybe I'm just not sure what gap you were talking about? I post whenever it seems like enough time has passed in game that I get more spotlight time. I feel like I've done at least as much as Vlad (at least in my opinion), but Vlad's the face-man. I guess we can put more mords in his mouth if need be, but it just isn't the same coming from the stout stranger, the beast-man, the one-eyed newcomer, etc., as it is from the young noble.

I guess I can steal the show more often if it makes everyone feel better...*wink*

Just to confirm, these shadows are incorporeal, yes? As in, nonmagical weapons... kaput?

Blue_eyed_paladin wrote:

Yep. The critters are incorporeal. Egil is not. Though to mitigate DM being a bastard I had thought that the 50% miss chance applied to all atks without ghosttouch. Then realized that its an auto miss with regular weapons and the miss chance with magical. In hindsight when I constructed this encounter and variant critter I should've assigned it an auto miss in complete darkness, a 50% in dim and 20% in regular conditions. See how it goes I suppose.

(male Dwarf Rouge 5/fighter2/gamer 20)

i thought about using the light spell, but i didnt think it would really do anything...i guess i'll give it a shot now tho. lol

(Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2))

Eh, that's fine... not having any way of hurting them is why incorporeal critters are so damn nasty. I think one of my favourite Conan stories has Conan tossing his broadsword aside in order to hit a demon with a silver candelabra, reasoning that "silver and fire can harm it where steel fails". I'm having fun (just not paying enough attention!).

Blue_eyed_paladin wrote:

I had to grin when I read about the shadows entering the fray. I'm thinking hey, this guy is a bastard, like I'm a bastard. Including incorporeal foes before giving the party a magic weapon is a pretty dirty trick for a DM, but if you leave the characters and out you can scare the crap out of them and teach them that not all battles can be won. I found Dovarr's use of Spirtual Weapon particularly clever. There are other tools that could be used to tackle the situation at hand as well.

I also find my character's stats particularly humorous at the moment. I took 6 Str Damage of a total of -3 to attack and damage, but I was raging giving my 4 Str for +2 attack and damage and Ottar is singing for another +1 to attack and damage. So the end result? My combat ability has washed the effect of that nasty nasty 6 you rolled. I personally can't wait to pound the stuffing outta Egil on my turn while he's still prone and before I get whalloped again and really do become ineffective.

Cheliax (RPG Superstar 2010 Top 32, 2011 Top 16)

I told you I'd find some time to steal the spotlight, I just wasn't really anticipating an encounter where only I could win...

Nah, incorporeal is fine, Dorvarr always has another trick up his sleeve, and now that he's taking strength damage, there's more room in the sleeves, right?

(Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2))

I hope I'm not going to get in trouble for killing Egil... but would we have been able to save him?
I'm feeling bad now, but I have a feeling if he survived, he'd be a) horribly scarred, b) bitter about a), c) not our friend any more, and d) possibly still possessed.
Any of these could cause us problems, but I'm still worried.
Damn LG alignment! I guess call it survivor's guilt.

Alignment wise I'd say the action is justified. Release from possession, insanity, giving him a good death. It might not be modern day PC LG but Viking era LG? Sure. As for other consequences well only time will tell...

(male Dwarf Rouge 5/fighter2/gamer 20)

i know i'm not contributing much to the game, i'm still new to this, i'm trying, i really am.

(Male Human Paladin 4/Moral Compass 3/Master GM 1 (ex-Retail Ninja 2))

Hey, I'm not complaining. The more the merrier... indeed, I'd look pretty silly pontificating away on my own. Vlad's a big team player... he just likes being the face of the team. When it comes down to it, Kveldulf and Ragnarr are much better warriors... we all have our own strengths, and I'm having a lot of fun, just let me know if I'm overshadowing you a little. I have no problems backing off.

(male Dwarf Rouge 5/fighter2/gamer 20)

no your fine, face away lol. its the typical inadaqacies of being low level lol. hopefully i'll be able to shine if/when we end up in the wilderness.

Well I imagine there certainly will be some more wilderness action upcoming and as a DM I have to do some thinking ahead to tailor stuff a bit more to the party's various talents. Thanks for hanging in there.

Spoiler:
Did we/you come up with a name for your druidic order? I'll also probably need to flesh that out a bit more soon. Any input/ideas about your society would be appreciated. My thoughts thus far that it was founded by a group of aesthetics that first came to this land to commune with the island's spirits.

Hey guys I'm going to try to put together some additional content for the campaign writeup as it seems somewhat likely that the world is going to get a little bigger than just Raudurfoss.

Cheliax (RPG Superstar 2010 Top 32, 2011 Top 16)

Oh, you mean this campaign isn't written just for me to showcase the awesome powers of the cleric? Ah man, and here I thought it was going to be all incorporeal all the time from now on...

Hey, where are you going with my spotlight? It's cold in the dark parts of the stage...

Just razzing you. Yeah, it was kind of a rough encounter for some of the new party members, but I'm sure it will even out soon enough. Looking forward to the extra material. Plus, if Vlad's the face, the rest of us don't need to have manners...

Boxhead wrote:

True, and I think Ragnarr is taking that statement and running for a few miles with it. In his own, rather charming, way. Sort of like a dog that pees on your best carpet.

(male Dwarf Rouge 5/fighter2/gamer 20)

To be honest i've been pre-occupied with other things, but i will work on it. As far as a name, i'm not sure they'd even have an official name.

I'll try and hammer out some more details real soon.

Thought I'd ask you guys this. I've had a query approved for an 1800 word article in Kobold Quarterly and was wondering if any of you might be interested in giving it a read and critiquing it? Here in the Junction don't realy have too many gamers to fly it by. I believe I have most of your emails so if you're interested let me know and I'll send it on to you. I should submit the article in a week. Thanks in advance.
