Okay, let's do this! Talk over characters, ask questions, whatever seems to fit here. Among other things, it would be nice to see where exactly everyone is in their character creation sequence, including background and the like.

Posting to get my dot.

The dot mockith me.

Just remembered how to get a dot.
I am dotted now.

Cheliax (Male Something all together Eerie Rogue/ Assassin 10/2)

Hey all. I am just dotting the board so I can find it later. I am still trying to figure out what I want to play. Though I would really like to play a Tuatha de Dannan from the Companion book, though I am flexible to go another route.

Shisumo if you have any questions for me my email is in my profile.

Could I have it be my choice on the type of weapon damage for 1 dot?
(Basically choose bashing or lethal when I draw the weapon or before hitting.)
'cuz we don't want to kill everything all the time...

Osirion (M carbon based dice form graphic guy 10 / geek 5 / collector 6 / daddy 2 / GM 4)

@deathboy Playing a Tuatha de Dannan would be cool. I can provide screen caps of the god and Purview stuff if you want to get it to Shisumo. (Screenshotting the pdf I think would be ok...)

You always have the choice to do bashing damage instead of lethal, you use the flat of the blade.

FLAT OF THE BLADE:
The character inflicts bashing damage with a lethal weapon, turning it or otherwise using it awkwardly to avoid dealing lasting wounds. Doing so increases the attack’s difficulty by one and decreases the raw damage of the attack by two, but the weapon inflicts bashing damage if it hits.

Yeah it was either that or go for a Child of Bast or Hermes

That's cool. Good to know.

But if I'm paying 1 dot to make it lethal, would it cool to make it lethal damage at my option?

Are the Tuatha a form of Scion, or are they some variety of elf? (I can't recall offhand what the "elves" are actually called in Scion...)

EDIT: never mind, I tracked it down already. I'm not interested in doing anything piratical here, but let's see if I can manage to find a sufficiently cheap copy of the Companion somewhere first.

Drivethrurpg has the companion it its original 5 part. So you could get the Tuatha de Dannan section by itself if need be.

I believe I have a full set of crunchy bits here, but I'm sorely lacking fluff.

Worse yet, in brainstorming backstory and motivation for my "private investigator scion of Vidar", I think I've finally come up with something good, but it motivates me to rearrange the crunch a bit in order to swap secondary and tertiary emphasis between physical and social.

This probably wouldn't be so bad, since it appears that we are a bit lacking in the social category. Before I do that, though, I'm interested to understand how much or little direct combat should be expected in a Scion game.

EDIT:

Actually, thinking about it a bit more, I probably don't really need to rearrange the crunch to accomodate her background story, especially since the crunch fits being a Scion of Vidar rather well.

So, I'll work on background story and physical description during breaks from work through the course of the day and should have something ready to go by the end of today.

Either way, I'm still interested to know what to expect regarding intensity of combat in a typical Scion game.

Also, I'd appreciate a review of the crunch by Shisumo, and am interested in feedback from any of the other players who feel so inclined.

Brainstorming regarding background added to character sheet. Mostly only lacking description, avatar, and name now.

Cheliax (Male Something all together Eerie Rogue/ Assassin 10/2)

Right now I am looking at these concepts:

  • Scion of The Morrigan who is a The prophet of Chaos,Death and War
  • Scion of Hermes Super Spy of Olympus
  • Scion of Bastet whom is the sneak thief

These are in no particular order.

A crazy prophet of doom could be useful to have around.

Dude, prophets of doom are a dime a dozen in Scion. I mean, seriously, saying "the world is in terrible danger!" in Scion is like saying, "I fear that it will rain in the next week in Seattle!" It's not really prophecy at that point...

I'm a bit wiped at the moment, so a full review will have to wait until tomorrow, but the initial pass looks good.

As for the level of combat... well, here's the thing. There's a war for the World going on, and Scions are either taking sides or caught in the middle. It's basically impossible to stay far enough from the fighting to avoid combat, but there are several ways to approach those kinds of situations that will determine precisely how things will go.

If it helps, though, part of why I wanted to run this game is because I've had visions of John Woo-style "sideways double-pistol" action scenes floating through my head...

Okay, then I suspect I should be concerned if her only combat abilities are due to Brawl. Even with Crushing Grip, it's mostly non-lethal damage, correct?

I'll read more on how combat works and make some revisions with this in mind. Also, I'm likely to go back and rearrange Epic Attributes just a bit.

There was one a Stamina Knack that I almost took ("Solipsism"). Combined with some of her other traits, it should help make her harder to kill off.

I can totally tone down the prophet thing. I just used it as a base for the powers I was looking at. In the end that character ould have been a combat beast anyways.

My comment was a joke. ;) I have no objections to a prophet, though your "combat beast" comment does echo some of the concerns I've seen tossed around the forums about geasa.

True and yes they are rightly deserved. The unfortunate thing is that Celtic/Irish legend actually helps solidify the powers with the example of Cuchulain. It is also a great double edge sword if used correctly Cuchulain lost his powers because he was feed dog meat without his knowledge or consent. Either way I am will to work with you on this.

If you've interest in Cuchulain and Celtic mythology but haven't read The Táin, I'd recommend you give it a whirl. It's actually a rather fun text and is available online from several sources.

ok. reporting for duty.

Que pasa Benny.

Ah, I think I've got an idea that might help turn my character into more of a combat badass without changing her concept too much.

So, I acquired Ragnorök and was reading the section about Vidar (and his boots). In the section on Vidar's Birthrights, it indicates:

Ragnarök wrote:
Relic 5 (Boots—Justice, War)

Later on in the same section:

Ragnarök wrote:
Other Notes: Kicks delivered with Vidar’s boots are treated as unarmed strikes that deal two extra dice of damage over the normal amount, and converted into lethal damage. They also allow the use of War and Justice Boons.

Aha! This made me realize that I could probably get lethal damage from Brawling by spending a point of Birthright on my boots to enable this. That of course, resulted in a cascade of tweaking, so you'll want to check things over again.

And, yes, her attributes have been modified so that she's now a hot Nordic blonde with a brain, rather than the socially inept, plain-looking, major manipulator that I'd previously been going for (actually those were remnants of when 'she' was going to be a 'he'...before I thought of a compelling backing story motivating a hero of Vengeance).

Of course, you should keep your distance, gents; after the experience with her husband and the subsequent stint in a women's correctional facility, she "switched sides". That said, keeping a safe distance, you should definitely check out those boots. I'm rather proud of them.

Also, I've now chosen a name and an avatar. I'd like to reserve the right for a final round of tweaking and obviously need to buckle down on some descriptive prose, but I believe she is now almost fully fleshed out.

Hello Shoke and Ima.

Ima and Benny look good. I do have a question about Xoch's maquahuitl, though. Is that from a book, and if so, which one? Because the "counting as sacrifices" thing is making me twitch a little.

Otherwise, we're still waiting on deathboy's character; I think, for the moment, I'm going to rule the Tuatha off-limits, though. I've got some concerns about their Purview, and the book - which I have ordered, actually - isn't here yet, and I'd rather not wait for it in order to get this game in gear.

We also still haven't heard from catman or Khairn - not sure if they're still with us or not.

Fair enough I'll get the Scion of Hermes up then, give me a day to get him together.

Xoch's maquahuitl is your basic one with +2 to damage, +2 to accuracy.

I wasn't sure if you would ok the scrafice thing, it is a bit much for just one point. I was looking for some effect that if I killed a titan spawn I would regain will or legend.

Hm. I think I will probably allow it if you actually strike the deathblow with it. Let me ponder a bit more, but my gut says that's not too bad. Any lethal wound, though, is definitely not just worth a single dot.

Okay, reread Itztli. All of the heroic-level powers are self-only, so the special power wouldn't do anything until/unless you make it to demigod status. With that thought in mind, let's try this: if you kill a titanspawn (as in, you personally inflict the deathblow), you may dedicate the death to the Atzlanti and gain 1 point of Legend. This can't take you over your maximum, but you can use it as often as you can find titanspawn to slaughter.

Sound good?

Actually not, as a general rule. The only undead that meet that definition are the hungry corpses. If you're looking for a quick and easy way to tell if something is a titanspawn, check if it has Dark Virtues. If it doesn't, I will typically not rule it as titanspawn. If it does, however, usually it will count.

How does a character know if something has dark virtues?

Cheliax (Male Something all together Eerie Rogue/ Assassin 10/2)

Are you allowing characters to pull knacks from the Demi-God/God books as described in Demi-God? Just want to make sure I know my choices.

fray wrote:

It isn't always guaranteed, actually, but typically an Occult roll will give you that information.

deathboy wrote:

Yes.

OK this is my character name I will be fleshing out the rest of the details Sunday.

Nuts and bolts are done.

Just need a background to put in and I'll be set to go.

I think we are good to go. I'm trying to get a couple other projects wrapped up and on the shelf, but I hope to get this game moving in the next couple days.

I was sick all the way through my two days off this week, so I'm not ready to get started yet... I've got 14 hours of work ahead of me today, but I'm going to see if I can't manage to get a game thread up and running tonight before I collapse into bed.

One thing that would help - where are you guys? You can pretty much pick anywhere in North America for the moment...

L.A. would fit for Benny, Ima and Tocal, not sure about Trent.
