Qadira (Me - male; my characters - usually female Depends which day it is 20th Level Metalhead)

This is the OOC discussion thread for the Pathfinder/Red Hand and More game.

(Male Human Bard 5 / Pathfinder Chronicler 1)

I can usually post everyday, but sometimes IC isn't available. (When posting from my Blackberry) so feel free to make rolls for me when I can't reach it. Alternatly I always carry my dice with me, and could make the rolls physically and post them then.

I'm out of town till late Thursday, but will try to squeeze in shopping, and spells.

About backstory. I prefer to have it discovered during play than have an essay buried on the character's profile. I have a solid past for Tate, and would like to reveal it slowly. I am hoping that the characters are not assumed to know each other, and are going to introduce themselves in the game. Things like alignment of the rest of the party, class and spells are not really in our characters to know, so I am not going to read any of the other stat blocks, so please don't misunderstand when Tate asks the other characters some questions.

If this is difficult, let me know, and I will type up a bio, but personally, I think I want a bit of mystery about my lanky rogue.

Similarly, I will describe him in thread.

(Male Halfling Sorcerer (Fey) 1/Druid 5)

The tale of Lucky Hans:

As a young boy, Hans lived alone with his father Josef on the outskirts of a forest in the far-away country of Ustalav. His mother died when he was just a baby, but his father (a poor but honest woodcutter) raised him the best way he knew how.

But as the years went by, his father grew tired and lonely and looked for a new wife. One night, a beautiful young woman caught his eye and he fell under her spell immediately. Soon the two were married. But Hans didn't like his new stepmother; she never went out during the day, and he saw his father growing weaker and weaker before his very eyes. His stepmother hated Hans as well, and finally one night she ordered Hans's father to take him out and kill him. The weak old man didn't dare to disobey his wife, but he didn't have the heart to kill his own son, so instead he led him out into the haunted wood and left him there to die.

Luckily, some kind sprites discovered the young boy and took pity on him. They raised him as one of their own, teaching him a few simple magic tricks and the secrets of talking with animals. When he turned 16, he heard the sad news that his father had died and his stepmother had disappeared without a trace. With no family left to hold him to Ustalav, he grew restless and declared his intent to see the world. The fey bid him a tearful farewell, and he has been travelling Golarion ever since.

Hi, I'm "JZ". Just posting to let you know I'm working on Sevegny, a human priestess of Calistra.

There's two sides to every story and at least two stories to Diego... As Diego tells it, he's the son of an Elven princess and a Human hero who fell madly in love, gave birth to a child foretold by prophecy and then were tragically slain by Evil Forces. The child, Diego himself, grew up raised by his village to be a Champion against the Darkness, and has now Gone Forth to find his Way.

Of course, every time he tells it the story seems to change...

What is known is that he grew up in Nirmanthas, disdains the aloofness of elves and considers himself quite the dashing rogue. He's full of himself, quick to anger but quick to forgive and prone to talking himself into trouble.

He's also covered in bronze scales, is quite tall and leanly muscled and his fingers end not in nails, but delicate claws that he keeps finely manicured.

(M Human Fighter 6 (favored class))

Here's what I've got on Cal, as of now:

Cal is native to Molthune, where he earned his citizenship by serving in the army for the requisite five years. He has been working in law enforcement for the past seven years in Molthune. Recently, he has become interested in the history and culture of Cheliax. Although he does not particularly care for the empire's association with devils, he has been severely impressed by the Order of Hellknights, and is now driven by the goal of eventually joining their ranks. To this end, he is seeking outstanding opportunities to train and develop his already considerable martial skills.

Cal believes in discipline, civilization, and human culture. As far as the gods go, he respects them all, and particularly reveres Abadar, Irori, and Aroden; the latter despite the fact that he is a dead god.

(Gender is a construct. A golem is also a construct. Therefore, my gender is a golem. It says up there I'm a golem. What? That's a race. Bookseller 3, Reader 3, Writer 2, Illustrator 1, DM 1, Bewildered Militant Punk Hippy 5)

That's cool. I also assume that the characters get to know each other in-game. I don't think that us, as players, being aware of the characters' histories necessarily hampers that kind of role-playing, but if you want to keep Tate's history to yourself and leak it to us in game, that's fine with me.

Don't forget to add Channel Energy to your list of abilities. That's a big one! That was a big change in the cleric class from 3.5 to Pathfinder. With a 17 Charisma, you can channel energy 6 times a day for 3d6 each time, which can be mass healing energy or turn undead energy, on top of your spells.

OK, thank you ! As you can see, I'm a noob with Pathfinder. And I'm not that great with 3.5 to begin with.

Don't feel bad, we're all learning it as we go. I've only been playing Pathfinder a few months, and I'm still finding new things I hadn't noticed before.

Slowly coming along. I work Friday, Saturday, Sunday but have off Monday; I can still post intermittently on the weekend. Apologies to the crew, but once I have her feats and items finished I'll post more timely.

Questions

We get bonus hit point or skill point per level in favored class correct ? Is anyone aware of any Intelligence based Weapons Feat that can stack or used with Weapon Finesse ?

I've got my skills and feats picked out. I'm going uber-Xena and choosing Intimidate, Weapon Focus with my whip and Dazzling Display (intimidate all within a 30' radius.) Whip-pah pah pah !

Combat Expertise allows you to add your Int modifier or BAB, whichever is lower, as a Dodge bonus to your AC, while subtracting the same amount from your attack roll. So if you're using that with a light weapon (your rapier would qualify) stacked with Weapon Finesse, you could use your Dex bonus instead of your Str bonus to attack, subtracting 1 from your attack roll and adding it to your AC.

Improved Disarm - disarm opponents without drawing an Attack of Opportunity.

Improved Feint - feint as a move action, rather than a standard action (meaning you could feint and attack in the same round). Feint requires a successful Bluff check, and if successful subtracts the opponent's Dex bonus from his AC.

Not Int-based, but you could also benefit from Two-Weapon and Improved Two-Weapon fighting and Two-Weapon Defense. Those are all Dex-based, but I don't see anything in the descriptions that says you can't use them together with Weapon Finesse, and I don't recall seeing anwhere that you can't stack feats that go off the same ability (though some specific feats state that they can't stack, such as Whirlwind Attack).

As far as posting time, don't worry about it. I'll get the adventure started this evening, but the group probably won't be all together right at the start, you'll be meeting each other in role-play, so I can always just have them meet your character last if your work schedule has you away for a day or three.

Here's Sevegny's background. Everyone can read the spoilers, or leave it if you would rather find out from Sevegny herself. Try not to laugh, too hard.

Spoiler:

A native of great Absalom, Sevegny began life as the child of a wealthy merchant and his mistress. So while she was materially well taken care of, as a bastard she had to suffer the moral prejudices of a generally unsympathetic community.

By the time she had come of age she had been drawn to the worship of the elven goddess Calistria. She found the free morality of Calistria's teachings liberating. To her it was a torch that she used to dispel the hypocrisies made her ashamed of herself.

She was a priestess and temple prostitute for a few years until she struck a temple patron for hurting a young postulant. She left the church when they sided with the patron, who not coincidentally was a major contributor.

Sevegny took a lover, a mercenary named Drago. For a year she accompanied him on his adventures and learned from him the skills of violence and deception.

Since then Sevegny has been wandering the lands of the Inner Sea, fighting for coin and fame. And loving, for much the same.

Okay, our player from the Wicca Forums board has confirmed she will be joining us. Hopefully she'll have a character up in a day or two. I'll start bringing the characters together ingame tomorrow and Sunday, then once you've all met, we'll start the game proper.

(Female I'll let you know when I figure that one out. 4th lv Mother/1st lv Ranger)

Hello, I'm the a fore mentioned person from the Wiccan forums.I'm in the process of downloading the book. I'll have a character hopefully sometime very soon (depending on how inspired I'm feeling). Can't wait to start.

Welcome to the Paizo forums, Celest!

Qadira (Me - male; my characters - usually female Depends which day it is 20th Level Metalhead)

Oh, an additional note to those of you who are taking levels in your favored classes. According to the designer notes, levels in a favored class will confer either a +1 bonus per level to hit points or to skill points. I am going to overrule that for my game. Since skill points are pretty low in Pathfinder, and you're going to be going up against some strong opponents, I'm going to let you do both - if you have levels in a favored class, you can take both the +1 hit points and +1 skill points per level.

Qadira (Me - male; my characters - usually female Depends which day it is 20th Level Metalhead)

Okay, I'm going over everybody's characters one at a time, just to check the math and make sure nothing was missed. Not that I don't trust you guys, but I find that often times when the math is wrong, it is wrong to the detriment of the character, and I don't any of you undercutting yourselves!

Okay, first up is Cal.

Calumbrust Ozar

Spoiler:

Notes on Skills
On your skill points, I believe you undercut yourself by three points (four points, actually - see below). Because of your Class and Intelligence, you gain 4 skill points per level. You also gain one per level for being human, and one per level in your favored class (which you selected as Fighter). So that gives you a total of 6 skill points per level, for a total of 36. I went over your skills, and doing the math with the totals you gave for the skills you took ranks in (and figuring for armor check penalties [-4, instead of -5, due to your Armor Training] and class skill bonuses), I came up with a total of 33 ranks bought. However, it looks like you also put 7 ranks into Climb*, but even though it is a class skill, you can only put as many ranks into it as you have character levels, so the max ranks on any one skill is 6. So you'll have to drop one rank from Climb, which will give you four more skill points to distribute, as long as you don't put more than 6 ranks to any one skill.

*You listed a total score of 10 for Climb. Figuring that your Str bonus (+4) and ACP (-4) will cancel out, that leaves you with your +3 class skill bonus plus number of ranks to reach 10, which means you had to have put 7 ranks into it.

Here is how I have you on all the skills right now (on Str and Dex-based skills, the number before the slash is your bonus with armor, and the number after the slash is your bonus if you aren't wearing your armor when you attempt the skill):

Acrobatics -2/+2
Appraise +1
Bluff +1
*Climb +10/+14 (7 ranks)
*Craft (weapons) +9 (5 ranks)
*Craft (other) +1
Diplomacy +1
Disguise +1
Escape Artist -2/+2
*Handle Animal +7 (3 ranks)
Heal -1
*Intimidate +7 (3 ranks)
Perception -1
Perform +1
*Ride +7/+11 (6 ranks)
Sense Motive -1
Spellcraft +1
Stealth -2/+2
*Survival +5 (3 ranks)
*Swim +9/+13 (6 ranks)

*Class skill

This list includes untrained skills that you did not take ranks in but can still use, but does not include skills that are Trained Only.

Note on Saves
Your "Bravery" bonus to Will saves against Fear is +2 at 6th level, not +1. It's +1 at 2nd level, then it goes up by one for every four levels beyond that, to a max of +5 at 18th level.

Qadira (Me - male; my characters - usually female Depends which day it is 20th Level Metalhead)

And, next up is ...

Tate Argensier

Spoiler:

Rogue Talents - you only get three at 6th level, so you'll need to drop one.

Weapon Focus - assuming you don't drop the Combat Trick rogue talent, which weapon is this applied to? I'm assuming the longbow?

Hit Points - We're not doing the racial bonus to hit points, unless everybody agrees to do it. But I assume that you chose Rogue as your human favored class? If so, you do get the +1 hit points per rogue level, and +1 skill points per level (as I noted in an earlier post). Your hit points, then, would be 6d8 +6 (Con) +6 (favored class) = 60.

Skills - If you chose Rogue as your favored class (and I assume you did), you'll get a total of 72 skill points (([8+3] x 6) + 6 [favored class] = 72). If I did my math correctly, it looks like you spent 77 skill points, so you'll need to subtract five ranks somewhere. Don't feel bad, whenever I make up a new character, this is the area where I almost always mess something up (and I've even caught some of the excel-based chargens, like HeroForge, messing up the math)!

Note: If you read this before I saved the edit, ignore what I said about armor check penalty. I forgot that the ACP on any masterworked armor (including magical armor) is reduced by 1, which will negate your ACP entirely.

Here is what I have you at on your skills right now:

*Acrobatics 14 (6 ranks)
*Appraise 12 (6 ranks)
*Bluff 9 (6 ranks)
*Climb 9 (6 ranks)
*Craft (alchemy) 7 (1 rank)
*Craft (bowmaking) 8 (2 ranks)
*Diplomacy 9 (6 ranks)
*Disable Device 14 (6 ranks)
*Disguise 5 (6 ranks)
*Escape Artist 5 (untrained)
Heal -1 (untrained)
*Intimidate 6 (3 ranks)
*Knowledge (Dungeoneering) 8 (2 ranks)
*Linguistics 7 (1 rank)
*Perception 8 (6 ranks)
*Perform (act) 4 (1 rank)
*Perform (oratory) 4 (1 rank)
*Profession (advocate) 3 (1 rank)
*Profession (bookkeeper) 3 (1 rank)
*Profession (cartographer) 3 (1 rank)
*Profession (teacher) 3 (1 rank)
*Ride 4 (untrained)
*Sense Motive 3 (1 rank)
*Sleight of Hand 14 (6 ranks)
Spellcraft 1 (untrained)
*Stealth 14 (6 ranks)
*Survival 2 (untrained)
*Swim 5/6 (3 ranks)
*Use Magic Device 5 (2 ranks)

*class skill

Everything else looks good. If I missed something, or one of your feats or skills helps account for those extra five skill points and I didn't catch it, let me know - I don't want to knock off points if I don't have to.

Also, were you finished shopping? It looks like you spent just a little over 12,000, which would leave you with just under 4,000 gold. You don't have to spend it right now, I was just wondering.

Qadira (Me - male; my characters - usually female Depends which day it is 20th Level Metalhead)

Cal, on the skills where I calculated what your score would be with and without armor, add one to each of those for the "with armor" side, because I forgot that magical armor (indeed, any masterworked armor) reduces the Armor Check Penalty by one, so your ACP is -3, not -4.

Qadira (Me - male; my characters - usually female Depends which day it is 20th Level Metalhead)

And, next is ...

Lucky Hans

Spoiler:
Everything looks good. But don't forget that the Fly skill also takes an Armor Check Penalty. You'll have a 4 there when you're wearing your armor, but a 7 if you're not wearing it.

Nightwish wrote:

** spoiler omitted **

Spoiler:
I left it out because he's only likely to fly when he's wild shaped, in which case his armor will get absorbed and the penalty won't apply.

True 'nuff!

Qadira (Me - male; my characters - usually female Depends which day it is 20th Level Metalhead)

I'll proofread Diego and Sevegny after lunch, and the other characters once they are finished.

I calculate the following:

8 (rogue) 3 (intelligence) 1 (favoured class) 1 (human bonus) for thirteen skill points a level. Total is (6 x 13) for 78 points.
I spent the following:

Acrobatics 6
Appraise 6
Bluff 6
Climb 6
Craft (alchemy) 1
Craft (bowmaking) 2
Diplomacy 6
Disable Device 6
Disguise 2
Intimidate 3
Knowledge (dungeoneering)2
Linguistics 1
Perception 6
Perform (act)1
Perform (oratory)1
Profession (advocate) 1
Profession (bookkeeper) 1
Profession (cartographer)1
Profession (teacher)1
Sense Motive 1
Sleight of Hand 6
Stealth 6
Swim 3
Use Magic Device 3

So skills are good to go, unless we are not using intelligence raises to retroactively grant skill points. If that is the case, I will have to remove three points.

The hit points are an error on my part. I had (constitution) selected instead of (race)

The extra rogue talent is just wierd. Hogarth spotted that one. I will remove fast stealth.

Ah, the human bonus, that's what I missed. You're good to go, then! I don't think Cal got those either, so Cal, put another 6 skill points on your character.

I really need to start reading the human closer! I never play humans, so I just never paid as close attention to them as I did to the other races.

Bleeding creatures take that amount of damage at the start of each of their turns. The bleeding can be stopped by a DC 15 Heal check or the application of any effect that heals hit point damage. Bleeding damage from this ability does not stack with itself. (PFA3 39).

Desna's locks, you are right. Must be an error, where the program completely ignores the armour entry, and thus does not include the dex penalty. There are some strangenesses around...

Coraline and Tate could have met before, as he is a very rangerish type of rogue, and gets on very well with elves.

I'm good with knowing people. Diego would definitely like to know Svegny (sp?)...

I've caught a few inconsistencies with some of those CharGen programs. I believe it was ScoreGen (though I wouldn't swear to it) that was somehow adding my Armor Check Penalty to my skill scores, instead of subtracting it, and I played the character for weeks before I discovered the error. I haven't noticed anything quite like that with HeroForge yet, but my main gripe with that one is that, as of the last time I checked, they hadn't changed over the skill sets to the Pathfinder skills in the Pathfinder edition.

Okay, I've got intro posts up in the IC thread for Diego and Sevegny, so the two of you now have an opportunity to meet. Due to Coraline's chosen profession as a bartender, I went ahead and set her in the tavern as the bartender who is setting Sevegny (and probably by extension, Diego) on the pre-adventure quest to find Tate, and likely meet up with Lucky Hans and Calambrust along the way.

That'll leave Coraline in a position where she can either join you before the adventure begins proper, or just after, depending on how soon her player is able to post again (I believe he said Monday). And once Red Feather and Celest's characters are ready, it'll be easy enough to find them somewhere along the way.

Oh, and for Celest's benefit, since she may not have seen the recruitment thread where I originally posted links to the OOC and IC threads, here is where the IC thread can be found.

I can usually post everyday, but sometimes IC isn't available. (When posting from my Blackberry) so feel free to make rolls for me when I can't reach it. Alternatly I always carry my dice with me, and could make the rolls physically and post them then.

That's okay. I know how that goes - I sometimes find myself having to use my HTC Mogul (like a Blackberry), and advanced functions like IC don't work on it either. In that case, it's fine to do the rolls physically and post them. On your honor. As long as I don't see Natural 20's every other roll, it'll be fine.

Notes on Skills
On your skill points, I believe you undercut yourself by three points (four points, actually - see below). Because of your Class and Intelligence, you gain 4 skill points per level.

I think that Cal only gets 2+INT skill points per level as a fighter. You may want to take another look at the rulebook. His INT is 12, which is a +1 bonus, so the base skill points before other factors is 3/level.

Nightwish wrote:
You also gain one per level for being human, and one per level in your favored class (which you selected as Fighter).

Adding 2 more skill points per level gives a total of 30, which is a considerable bit more than the 21 I put in to him originally. 21? Yeah, due to some faulty math. Anyhow, I'll upgrade him soon.

Nightwish wrote:

I went over your skills, and doing the math with the totals you gave for the skills you took ranks in (and figuring for armor check penalties [-4, instead of -5, due to your Armor Training] and class skill bonuses)...

*You listed a total score of 10 for Climb. Figuring that your Str bonus (+4) and ACP (-4) will cancel out, that leaves you with your +3 class skill bonus plus number of ranks to reach 10, which means you had to have put 7 ranks into it.

Okay.

I wasn't figuring in AC penalty in my totals, so that is why Climb looked wrong to you. I'll factor in AC penalty after I reconfigure my skills.

I've got my Charater mostly done. All thats left is buying any other items. I've only got bare basics right now. Heres Amie's story.

Spoiler:
Amie grew up with her father, a human named Ben, and her uncle, John, on an out of the way farm surrounded by woods. Her father and her uncle were both farmers during the growing season and hunters the rest of the year. They made extra income by capturing wild horses and taming them. Neither her Father or Uncle would ever speak of her mother and Amie always felt it was better not to ask. She learned the skills of the two men's trade like any other child would. Early in her life she showed great potential in Archery, using her skill mostly when hunting. It was a simple life, and she knew if she ever wanted a bit more all she had to do was join her uncle on his trips to town to sell the horses they had trained. She enjoyed these trips and often visited the shrine to Erastil. She was quite happy.

The winter Amie turned 20, her father grew ill. She knew he was old (older than most fathers), and she did all she could to save him but still, he passed away. It was then that her Uncle John told her the truth. The two men that had raised her were not her real family. They had found her abandoned in the woods early one winter. They thought originally she was a full blooded elf. They tired to give her to a group of elves that passed by there farm but the elves said no, as she was only half blooded, it would be better for her to live there. So Ben, being the older of the two (50 at the time), took on the role her her father. John told her she was welsome to stay on the farm, but if she wished to leave and explore the world he would understand.

At first Amie thought she would stay. However soon afterwards she had a dream of Erastil. He called to her. With a heavy heart she left the farm and her uncle and went to the near by town alone. She joined the clerics at the temple and began her studies with them.

So, do you guys want to all start the game as complete strangers, or do you want some of your characters to know each other?

This works for me. I'll be interested to see how Cal is introduced to this group of rogues, scoundrels, and rapscallions (not to mention one sacred prostitute). :D

Cal's skills are tweaked and ACP has been noted.

As my character is a recovering alcoholic, she may be a rather surly barkeep (low charisma). She also is what we in the modern world would call mild bouts of Tourette syndrome. She also has the odd habit of entering other peoples personal space. So yeah, this should be fun.

I think I will PrC into Duelist after I hit the requirements but does anyone think Ranger 5/Wizard 1 is a bad build; was taking a level in wizard for wand or rod use.

By the way I realize I'm the last man to get ready and join the party but I really can't wait to start : )

I did the same thing, so obviously I don't think it's a terrible idea. :-)

Just don't forget about arcane spell failure; that's why I took Feather Fall and True Seeing (no somatic components).

Quick question:

Am I correct in the assumption that in Pathfinder a Keen weapon doubles its threat range - So a Keen Rapier would possibly crit on a roll of 15 to 20 ?

Any suggestions for tweaking out a Rapier, giving it more bang for the buck ?
