Okay, let's see what we've got here.

To begin with, I'd like the PCs to all be heroic mortals. We'll be following the heroic mortal character creation given in the Exalted core, with the following exceptions:

* PCs begin with three (3) Favored Abilities. They can have no non-Favored Abilities rated higher than the highest-rated of these three Abilities, and they must have at least 2 dots in each.

* You may, if you wish, begin play with an Awakened Essence. This costs 7 bonus points, and gives you an Essence pool equal to (Permanent Essence) x 10. The first (Permanent Essence) x 3 motes of this pool may be accessed normally; Essence beyond that requires the expenditure of a Willpower point. Having Awakened Essence means you may attune Artifacts and Hearthstones.

* Essence cannot be raised higher than 1 at character creation, however.

* In addition to the standard allotment of Background points, I plan to award two (2) additional Background dots based on your PC's reason for being part of the story. The relevant information is this:

The Guild has decided to reopen a lapsed trade route between Gem and the Lap, the key component of which was a large town called Kelmarane, at the base of the Pale Mountains between the two cities. The city suffered some ill-defined calamity roughly 20 years ago, and rumors claim that it has been overrun by bandits, slavers and hyena-like beastmen in the meantime. The Guild, in the person of their representative Almah Roveshki, have decided to reclaim Kelmarane, which means clearing it out and reestablishing the basics of civilization there.

So the question that needs answering is: why have you joined with Almah's group on this quest? Some possibilities include a connection to Kelmarane of some kind, a link with Almah, a history with the hyena-men, or something else entirely. Give me a good story and get 2 background dots!

* Finally, I have a fairly large library of Exalted books, though I haven't picked up many in the last year or so, so most of Second Edition is on the table; just ask if there's something you want.

(Male Humanoid Lurker 1/ Nerd 1)

Just posting to get my dot, mainly.

Anyway, reasons for me and my gang to be joining the expedition, I'll expand on them more later. First off, there's bound to be some good old-fashioned guilt-free loot in the city's ruins. Second, where the Guild goes, money follows, and where money goes, people follow, and where people go, criminals follow. And when they come, who shall they find find in charge of the thieves in town? Me.

Can we be Lunars? :D
Please. Please.

Osirion (M carbon based dice form graphic guy 10 / geek 5 / collector 6 / daddy 2 / GM 4)

off topic(ish):
I got the Fair Folk book for xmas. :]

Dotting my turf.

Andoran (Human (Minkai) Samurai (sword saint) 7 (Order of the Warrior))

I might (might!) make someone a Lunar. But don't count on it.

For the moment, though, we have to have the game last long enough to get to the Exaltation point anyway...

Osirion (M carbon based dice form graphic guy 10 / geek 5 / collector 6 / daddy 2 / GM 4)

Good enough. :D

So there's a Night, Zenith, and an Eclipse already accounted for? It seems that this expedition is missing a Twilight scavenger lord. Perhaps I will name him Yendeanae Iyohns.

Dax Thura wrote:

(wince) please don't... ;)

Dax, I notice that you're in another Legacy of Fire game on the boards already. As long as you don't engage in blatant metagaming from it, I don't have a problem with it, but I should point out that I plan to stick to the storyline fairly closely, so you might find it less enjoyable to do the same thing again in both threads...

Oh! I hadn't considered that it might be a problem. I'm pretty good at not metagaming (at least so I think), part of the fun is the interplay of the characters, and the systems are so different as to give a different gaming experience. So I don't think it will be a problem. Also, I will mention it to the dm running the other game. If you still have concerns or if he has them as well, I will bow out.

Osirion (M carbon based dice form graphic guy 10 / geek 5 / collector 6 / daddy 2 / GM 4)

Do I have to stick with Eclipse?

fray wrote:

Nope. Even if you remake the same character, your actual Exaltation status will be potentially subject to change when you take the Second Breath.

A fancy way of saying your Exaltation. (You have your first breath when you're born, you have your second breath when you get "reborn" as an Exalt.)

EDIT: Oh, while I'm here, what happens if the three favored abilities we choose also happen to be favored abilities for our exalt type? Do they just switch to something else?

Actually, when you exalt, your 3 Favored Abilities will have to be either Caste or Favored Abilities for you afterward. So in a sense, they will just switch, yes.

DM Shisumo, Seekerofshadowslight, the dm from the other game says it's all good. So, if you have no further objections, I would still like to put together a Scavenger Lord.

We're all good here, then. ;)

Where are we on character creation, folks? I'm kind of hoping to start the game sometime around Monday...

I will bust out a character by the weekend.

I'm getting there, I'm getting there.

EDIT: The only actual mechanics I have left to do are with the bonus points and finding all the derived stuff.

Much of my character is done. I still have some dots to work out, though.

Is Crux a character you've used for another game? Because the bottom half really doesn't look a thing like the top half...

No he's not, but I did a copy and past for the template of the character sheet. There's still some corrections I need to make, but I've been away from my material due to the holiday. He should be totally finished in no more than two days.

Andoran (Male Human of Mixed European Descent (Almost every country) Writer 3/Gamer 5/Game Writer 1)

Super! Thanks for the entrance to the game. Would have responded earlier, but haven't had access to a computer for the last couple days. Developing a character as I type this. Possibilities include: A mercenary looking for work who I may turn into a gunslinger later, as it were, and a bladesman in Guild pay. Both lean towards Dawn, which I notice a lack of in concepts about here.

(Female awww, but that would be telling Grammarian3/Artist1/Keeper of Useless Knowledge10)

Just saw this thread. Well, I've been offline quite a bit over the holidays, so it's more surprising that I saw it at all, since I wasn't expecting this to start so soon.
Anyways, I'm still interested, but I have to spend the weekend getting the house ready to show since we're moving soon and the landlord wants to get new tenants in (understandably). I don't know how much time it will take me to rewrite the character, but I think I can reasonably manage it by Tuesday. Not by Monday. I'll be spending the next two days feverishly working on making this place shine since our getting our security deposit back hinges on them getting a new tenant in here quick. No game is worth losing a couple thousand dollars. :)

Almost done.
I need to know how we are doing rituals for thaumaturgical degrees. How many do I know? Should I give a list of what I want? It would be a nice sized list.
With the Art of Encahntment, I could have, and would like to have, performed the ritual of least wonder on a few of my items, making them exceptional pieces of equipment.
With the Art of Alchemy, perhaps I'm earning my keep by making 'beauty products' for Lady Almah. Age Staving Cordial rocks. May I have some 'potions' already prepared?

I completely concur. Monday is a target date, not a hard-and-fast deadline. Get your character ready as soon as you can, but RL always trumps online. Glad you're on board!

Um, I'm not using Merits and Flaws. So you're probably going to need to revisit that list of Arts.

Crux has been updated.

Osirion (M carbon based dice form graphic guy 10 / geek 5 / collector 6 / daddy 2 / GM 4)

I'm thinking of a servant that has been in service to a family in one of the guilds and has been sent on this mission in hope that he will be killed so they do not have to pay my family what they are owed. (After the 10 years of service my family gets the second half of the payment for selling me into servitude. I'm free after my 16th birthday, which is in 2 weeks.) (Or just happened depending on GM's plot device.)
I was thinking of having 2 familiars a 3 and 2 dot, since none of the other Backgrounds make sense for him, but I am not sure what my options of familiar are. What can I get for 3 and 2 dots? Or is this not an option.
I have him written up, just looking at the LoF player's guide to flesh some things out and transfer him online.

I am thinking I *should* be done Monday. :)

Andoran (Male Human of Mixed European Descent (Almost every country) Writer 3/Gamer 5/Game Writer 1)

Question: Would it be possible to acquire a prayer piece via some method for the character at some point during or after Second Breath?

On pg. 38-39 of Glories of the Most High: The Unconquered Sun, for reference.

Would slightly alter my character generation, mainly in the use of a flamepiece for familiarity with such weapons, in addition to a bow.

Too much going on in RL so I'm going to have to drop out.

Sorry to see you go, Xabulba.

Anyway, done with everything other than the derived values.

Having Degrees means that you basically know all the rituals available to that level of thaumaturgical understanding and below without having to pick one. As long as you've got the minimum Degree, you are assumed to know the ritual in question.

For both the enchantment and the alchemy stuff, I think I'm going to fall back on the standard rules for resources ratings of items for stuff that you're beginning play with, so you can have up to three exceptional items, with base costs of no more than 2 dots. Similarly, you can have up to three minor wonders (but see below) that cost no more than 3 dots, so you could have up to three doses of Age-Staving Cordial on hand, or Seven-Bounties Paste, or some combination of those and any other alchemical items you want that cost 3 dots or less. This only applies during character creation - once the game begins, you can have whatever you can afford and have time to make, of course.

For your backstory, however, I'm going to give you 1 dot in Contacts and 1 dot in Artifact.

Alas, I don't own GotMH yet, so I can't promise that.

Hey DM, See my above post with questions.

Familiar is only available to characters with Essence pools, so unless you were planning to spend the points to give him Awakened Essence, Familiar really isn't an option. On the other hand, servants know stuff, so Contacts would make a pretty decent Background (and will likely be one of the things I will give you for your story), and you might have some Allies in the Guild (surely not everyone hates you!) or even a bit of Resources, if you've managed to save up a little money or your family has helped you out (assuming they've scraped together some money since the time they had to sell you in the first place).

I actually started typing this reply this morning, but then I fell asleep. ;)

Unfettered Silhoutte wrote:

Looking good. Have a point of Followers and a point of Influence.

Note, however, that you aren't likely to have most of your gang along with you on the way to Kelmarane. The Guild wouldn't hire anyone with an obvious agenda like yours, so you'll be needing to be "undercover," at least at first. You might have arranged for a couple of the "mercenaries" traveling with the group to be members of your gang, and it's also possible they might be traveling separately (either following your group or traveling a parallel route), but you won't have most of your associates ready to hand right when we begin.

Hey, I only bought one point of followers for a reason. It wasn't that big a gang in the first place, and he could only convince five of them that it would actually be worth it to join the caravan as "guards".

EDIT: Missed the extra point of Followers and Influence you gave me. Yeah, the bonus fifteen or so guys are following behind, and 2-5 are with me as "guards".

Osirion (M carbon based dice form graphic guy 10 / geek 5 / collector 6 / daddy 2 / GM 4)

I spent the points on the Essence pool. (Didn't know about the requirement for familiars.)
I would like a small spirit type as my #1 choice. Then a monkey then a dessert dog type as my next choices. (Not sure about the animal/creatures I can choose from.)

Do we have animas before exalting?

Are we going with Exalted names or D&D names? (flavor wise...)

Spirits are Allies, not Familiars, but you can have an Ally like that if you like. Otherwise, both monkeys and desert dogs are options - both have a base cost of 2 dots but can be upgraded per the usual rules.

Note, however, that Awakened Essence is a pretty rare thing, usually requiring hefty meditation or martial arts rituals, dealing with various potent gods, or similar unusual effects. I'd be most interested in hearing how your character came by it.

Animas are an Exalt-only thing. Pretty much everything else that has an Essence pool only has personal Essence, and thus no anima.

You can do either. The game is set in Creation, but "D&D-style" names certainly have a place there. I may or may not change the names of major NPCs in the storyline to reflect the move to Creation from Golarion.

Osirion (M carbon based dice form graphic guy 10 / geek 5 / collector 6 / daddy 2 / GM 4)

What/where are the rules for upgrading a familiar?
Oh, good to know about the Ally option. I may go with that then. I'll look into it.

Didn't know about the rarity of Essence, I didn't have that impression when you said we could spend points on it.

Along those lines, you mentioned we could spend points on manses and artifacts. The rules say GM approval. Do we have GM approval then?

For my artifact I'd like a Band of Faith (Storyteller's Companion p127). It provides 1 mote of essence.

fray wrote:

Oh, good to know about the Ally option. I may go with that then. I'll look into it.

The "upgrade" to which I refer is the basic Familiar rules, which state a given rating in the Background to have the creature as a Familiar at all, and which then further list the number of additional dots required for the familiar to have either unusually high intelligence (+1) or both impressive intelligence and an inherent Essence pool that can supplement yours (+2). So for 2 dots you can have a Familiar that is a monkey or a desert dog, for 3 dots either one could be a surprisingly intelligent (think Lassie, "Timmy's in the well?" level), and for 4 dots they would be roughly as smart as a bright 9 year old and also have some Essence they could lend you.

fray wrote:

Sorry, that's a setting thing, not really a rules thing.

fray wrote:

Yes, to make it clear and official, you can buy dots in Artifact - though I don't think I'd agree to more than a dot or two without several other supplementary Backgrounds like Resources, Influence, and/or Backing - and if you have Awakened Essence, you can also buy Demesne.

Dax Thura wrote:

No problem whatsoever.
