Here is where we can discuss everything about the game, starting with making your PCs. Make any necessary introductions as well please. I'll start, I have played in Mothman's game for a year or so and Wrath for a few months so we know each other a bit. I live in the UK and have gamed on and off since the age of 14. Currently I am running one game in RL called the Temple of Elemental Evil and Kram has just lost his second PC in that (due to the ineptitude of his party). Mondays is my busy day at the moment so I tend to post more often on other days. However with this game I am pretty excited already so it may be a while before I calm down. In answer to your question, you will make your PCs (with a little input from me to help fit background). You can discuss the rules, feats and other stuff generally but the less you know about most of the PCs the better. This is because I'd like the first meeting to have maximum impact and you guys do not generally know each other PC until then. More about that later. To add to the secrecy I'd like everyone to spoiler your character sheets (just like Bedu the Barber) on my alias. Robert/Elora/Kram that means clicking onto my profile name above, clicking into the right alias, opening all the spoilers and then copying the whole thing across onto an alias you create for your PC under your account. I've DM'd for my groups for most of that time, but with the wrapping up of my Age of Worms campaign just yesterday, I've decided to hang up my DMing hat for a year or so in the real world. I'm currently playing in 3 other PbP's on this board and DMing one that has FW in. My recent return to work slowed that one down a bit but I'm getting more time agian and hoping I can pick up the thrills and spills for that group again. This will be my first real attempt at playing a Bard, but I figure the nature of play by posts should work in my favour for being able to roleplay one. My real life group tends ot be more the hack n slash type than the roleplay type, so a bard never really had a chance to shine.I figure it will be differnt here. Right here goes, I'd like everyone to consider the character concept they produced as the first draft. Over the next few days I shall provide each of you with far more information about the Marquis, his proposition, and the way I see your individual PCs have fitted in the mainland. Mothman/Wrath you will be working together on this due to your entry into the adventure. Similarly Robert/Elora your PCs naturally go together so same for you. I don't mind if Mothman discusses more about his PC with Wrath because they will know each beforehand a bit. Robert, your PC and Elora's probably know each other well, however you may wish to keep the odd thing back. The odd skeleton in your closet. Kram has drawn the short straw, I'll help him, but his PC is more closely tied to the Marquis and he lives ten minutes down the road so that should help. Now level, usually everyone would be the same level. This time that will not be the case. Most of you will be able to choose between two levels, depending on how you see your guy developing. If a lower level fits then take that. In the long run you should all catch up. Remember even on this thread, please use spoilers if your question is about your PC so that the rest are kept in the dark. If Wrath titles it like below then only myself or Mothman should read it. But I don't want to be tenth level yet! For you relative newbies, if you press reply to this post you will be able to see how spoilers work. The same method applies for the other main codes, with either put things in italics or make them bold. Character Generation Dice rolling is by the honour system. I always start out trusting my players and I will soon know if someone is taking advantage of that. Somehow I don't think that is going to be a problem in this game. The honour system means you roll dice at your end and I believe what you say. You can use one of the web rollers like Invisible Castle, but I tend to only use that now for increased hit points when I level up a PC. So on page 15 of Pathfinder, there are the different methods of generating stats. You guys are going to use the dice pool method. Remember to assign all your dice to each stat before any rolling takes place. Hit points are maximum for first level and then roll for the rest (re-roll 1's). Cheers FW

Just to get your juices flowing, essentially you will be sent to fetch Mothman's character by the Marquis and bring him back to the lord for a job. A job for you both. Need to find a reason why the Lord of the Isles trusts you. Being a half-elf means that Mothman's wizard apprentice could get into lots of trouble on the way back if he doesn't have a gnome bard with him who knows how to handle the real world. About to sign out for the evening, so will think it through for the morning. I'm thinking the trust of a Marquis wouldn't be too easily won. Maybe I returned something of his that was stolen or lost. An item I picked up completely by accident and returned to the Marquis as I was travelling through. Consider it happy circumstance but the Marquis hs taken it as something more and now I'm running with his version of events. As for the stats, I was laughing at the first few rolls. They didn't really align with what I was after but I actually enjoy running random characters. I'm just lucky I did ok for the Charisma. That was 2 ones, two sixes and a five. Could've been much worse. However it does present and almost min maxed character and if that's a problem for your game I have rerolled below. As FW says, he plays in one of my pbp games here at Paizo (Age of Darkness) and I also played in a very interesting game that he was running for a while, though life got in the way and it never really got far off the ground. I consider myself a bit of an old hand at pbp now, having played in or run various such games for two or three years now. I’m running three games on the boards (my homebrew that FW is playing in, Age of Worms set in Greyhawk and Legacy of Fire set in Golarion) and playing in three active pbp games too. Despite that, I seem to keep finding new things and different ways of doing things in these games. I’ve been playing D&D since I was about 11 or 12, about 20 years now. Started with 2nd edition, and only switched over from that to 3.5 a few years ago. I don’t get to play (or DM rather, as I’m usually doing that) in real life as often as I’d like these days, but I have a long term group that I have been slowly running through Shackled City for the past several years, and it looks like I may be joining a new group soon as a player. I've been playing pretty religiously for the past 8 years starting with 2nd edition AD&D and proceeding on to 3 and 3.5 when they came out. I haven't played in a PbP since high school so it'll be nice to get my feet back in the water. I'm currently running the Legacy of Fire AP for friends here in South Carolina and have typically been the DM for the group of players I'm with for the past 3 years. I haven't player a Paladin before, though I've definitely handled them as NPCs. Much like Wrath the group I grew up playing with was very much into the Hack and Slash aspect so most of the heavy Roleplay experience comes from the White Wolf system (can you say angst I can!), I've tried to stick to a pretty even balance in the games I run so being about 1.2 million NPCs has definitely helped me grow as a RPer. As per usual I seem to get lucky on the char gen, wait till I wow you with my epic fail d20 rolls.
I do have a question in regards to character direction. Would it be worthwhile to go with mounted combat feats or would those be a relative waste like in most games? FW, rolled stats: Spoiler:
Str: 3d6 = 2, 2, 6 = 10. Nice and average there. Dex: 5d6 = 1, 5, 6, 1, 2 = 14. Hmmm, not bad, but not much to show for 5d6! I hope I do better with Int. Con: 4d6 = 6, 4, 3, 3 = 13. Respectable for a wizard I suppose. Wis: 3d6 = 6, 5, 5 = 16. Wow, I didn’t see that coming! Wis was shaping up to be a dump stat. Hmmm, mystic theurge? ;-) Int: 5d6 = 2, 5, 2, 6, 5 = 16. I was a bit worried with those 2s, but came through in the end. 16 is a good number for a prime req. Cha: 4d6 = 6, 5, 1, 2 = 13. Not bad, but it looks like I will stick with wizard over my back-up plan of sorcerer. I’ve not used this method before, it seems to give good stats … a little too good – have I done it right? Or just rolled well perhaps. Seems like a no-brainer to put my racial stat bonus on Int, and I probably will, but I’ll hold off for now while I think more about what sort of character I want to play. Sloes are pretty much astringent plums for cookery purposes. You can make a fine, rather sophisticated jam from them. As follows.
Weigh the berries.
Granulated is fine. If you want to go fancy, buy jam sugar with the added pectin, but these boys don't need much help in that department. Sterilise jam jars (roughly 4-5 per pound of fruit) by putting them in a 100 degree oven for at least 20 minutes. Leave them there while you're cooking the jam. Sloes into large pan. Add half a mug of water. Cook til slushy (usually about 10 minutes). Bring to boil so the stones rise. Use a slotted spoon to scoop the stones out. You'll get most of them very easily. Just warn any denture wearers that they might find stones in the finished product. Add the sugar. Allow sugar to dissolve and bring to boil and then pull back to a simmer. Simmer for no more than 8 minutes. Pot. I would be very tempted to add some cinnamon or ginger when the sugar goes in, for extra warmth. Around two teaspoons per pound. It will be quite a soft set, so you'll need to keep it in the fridge once its open. Unopened, you're quite safe for a year or more if you sterilise the jars properly. Robert Jordan wrote:

So Wrath, how do you think your gnome bard and my half elf wizard relate to each other?
My guy is very much searching for his place in the world, trying to find a way to make himself whole – as a part of that though, or an off-shoot, is making himself powerful / important, so that he might finally be accepted by elf and human alike. He’s felt like an outsider for much of his life, so he would respond well to friendship or good company. He’s probably a little shy and shelterd when it comes to inter-personal relationships. I reckon our two characters will be the two sides of the same coin Mothman. Lazarus is an outgoing friendly and somewhat amorous little gnome. He looks for the good in everyone, hoping to find some "humanity" in the world again. However, he's also been around the traps a few times so is possibly a bit more worldly than your wizard. From what FW has let me know, it would seem that is why we have been teamed up at any rate. You'll certainly find him a fast friend though somewhat flighty in terms of his devotion to a task. Easily bored, wants to see the world and tell its story. Your story would probably interest him a great deal, from what I read of your background so far. I'm off to watch Watchmen DVD. Here is your intro in more detail. Feel free to adapt your guy. His early life I have left alone but I'd like to introduce a rival. Another gnome who for some reason rubs Lazarus up the wrong way and tries to steal his girls, glory and tales or songs.

He can have a trait of your choice as well. Either homemade or from the PF books. Wealth will be the standard for his level plus 300 gold. That money came from the return of the San Frieden pearls to the Marquis. Information You Would Know – use your bardic abilities and ask questions as the party adventure and I will supply you with the snippets that you would have picked up on your travels. Essentially Lazarus can have been all over the north of the mainland, possibly seen a little of the south too before the war, maybe with his mother or father on their travels. Talfen Half-real Your wizard can either be first or second level. You decide once you have a feel for the character. The party will mostly vary between those levels but there needs to be some discrepancy because of the way people have written up their PC’s. Wealth will be the maximum that a wizard can have for that level. Naming, I liked the idea of the high elves having Latin sounding names to show their longevity, but maybe Talfen comes from the other side of his heritage. Also he gets one trait either drawn from a PF product or made up by you. Wrath and I worked out mine for his game and I’m sure we could do the same again. The background you gave fitted exactly with what I wanted, a young half-elf wizard, so thanks for that. I would like to slightly change things so that he was raised much further north, nearer the Western isles that the adventure takes place on. When I said that high elves are aloof and proud, arrogant and isolated I was understating that. My concept for them comes from an Isaac Asimov novel set on Mars where the few people living have homes hundreds of miles from each other. Even married couples only meet once or twice in their lives to procreate. The rest of the time communication takes place via magical holograms. The high elves do not have robots though they employ slaves, kobolds or goblins taken from the woods centuries ago and turned into dumb servants. The question is how do half-elves occur? One way is when a high elf must travel to a college or for a meeting then they do stop at noble castles and the like along the way, if they cannot teleport. These wizards are generally archmages so research can include grabbing the odd maid or noble daughter for a bit of how’s your father along the way. But it would be a cold, clinical thing that the elf barely remembers. The result as you said would be a pariah. The colleges act as crèche for growing high elves that is where the younger ones spend many years honing their talents until they too can take over a Tower. It is a very regimented system, with a rigid hierarchy of ability. But we are talking about only a couple of hundred elves across a large mainland, however their impact is huge because they seem to control the nobility. The colleges also contain nobles, many do not progress in magic, some do, some just go for knowledge of history, nobility and land management. The ones favoured by the elves generally do better in the future and that includes most of the highest nobility. Your master, Staff Sir Aristor Ganaeus, is self-taught with a title he made up and a thirst for knowledge. He has overcome many of the barriers the colleges put in his way to become the grumpy old half-real he is today (half-real means half-royal and stands for the way that the high elves regard their blood). In fact, Aristor is a fatherly figure who has taken great pains to give Talfen the best start in life that he can. Recently his cough has worsened and the draughty, run-down, old monastery he lives in has not helped. The Hospitalers of the Dove who run an infirmary in the monastery have tried to help but there is an inevitability about his long fight with illness. Magically Aristor is close to three schools, Divination, Conjuration and Necromancy. He studies the latter to learn more of the body and has several banned tomes in his possession. But the college inspectors rarely surprise the old codger now, the local villagers of Flamboun protect and warn him of anyone who approaches in thanks for all the good work he has done. Recently a gnome, Lazarus Quint, arrived with a letter for Aristor. The mage eventually sent for Talfen and introduced him to the gnome. And showed Talfen the letter. My Old Friend and Advisor in the Arts, Aristor We have discussed before how old age appears to have robbed us of our youth and we face a cold future. Remember that cold dragon we fought and slew in the dverge mountains all those years ago, and that seems like only yesterday but I doubt I could do it now. And I need to. My isles have been left without me these last few years and that has done them no good.

All sounds good, including the name! Yes, I was thinking that his first name is from his human heritage; his father may not know he exists, or does not care overly much about him if he does (I like your concept for high elves by the way).
I think I will start as a first level wizard, and I’ll probably take the second set of stats I rolled. How much further would you like me to go in character creation at this stage? Also, would Aristor have taught Talfen as a generalist or a specialist (in one of his preferred schools)? Or is that up to me. Mothman wrote:

My guess is that it's going to take at least a few days for the others to complete their PCs so take your time. I will leave the choice of wizard specialization or not to you. Aristor can help to start in any specialization but his favourite subjects are the ones he knows the most about.
First level it is, there is nothing like a blank canvass but let's give your wizard 700xp to show his studies have paid off a little. About me, Well I probably started playing structured gaming when I was thirteen or fourteen (about 10 years now) but before that I was in many play-by-post games. The biggest flaw to those was that they had no system at all to fall back on, and you can imagine how a bunch of teenagers writing stories eventually turned out (terrible angst, ultimate cosmic power, weapons of mass destruction, you get the idea) so I am excited to start playing in a game that has structure. I am an avid writer, and I think this will be a wonderful way to write everyday. I have also never played this particular fantasy trope. I've rolled up stats and have my ideas all formulated, I'm just not very computer savvy so I have to figure out the spoiler thing. By the way, thank you for the opportunity FW, I'm glad to be here. Advice on that spoiler thing. We have all been there and it's dead easy when you know it but I remember asking the self same question in May 2007. Armand de Seul/ Lady Alinuyn Chevalier
When I said that a few of the characters as written would need to be changed I was mainly thinking about yours. What you and Robert put together was stellar writing and great PCs, almost ideal for the purposes of the start of this game. We need to do a little horse trading to make the perfect fit, I think. But first off the mundane stuff, the campaign hinges around your character. Enough said. So everyone else is getting the opportunity to be second level or higher but you are the youngster, the noble thrust into a brave new world before he/she is ready. But they will help you. Or at least that is how I intended it before all that lovely writing started. Armand/Alinuyn will be a first level PC with maximum gold for that level. She gets one trait (there is a pdf on your account which you can download and read for free) that lists many basic traits or you come up with one of your own. Marquis Burnd

So I am almost positive I am going to make Armand a level 1 Fighter. I really feel that in order to depict the difference in experience between him and Vincent there should be a level difference. So level 1 it is!!!
As for stats: I rolled decently, but sort of confusing stats... 4d6 Strength - 15 5d6 Dexterity - 18 (I went with more dice for this stat because I wanted him to be a dex fighter, as his light style and quick nature are indictive of him not being a him, but Str. turned out nice too.) 4d6 Constitution - 11 (not real happy about this one but such is life) 4d6 Intelligence - 16 (I'm a smart little bugger) 3d6 Wisdom - 11 (I was very happy with this score, I like being an impetious youth :D ) 4d6 Charisma - 14 (Also happy with this score, if he is going to lead then Charisma is important) With my +2 from being a half-elf (which I am dropping in Con)you come out with: Str - 15 +2
Favored class is obviously going to be fighter, and since my con is so low I will probably drop the first FC point into my HP instead of a skill. And as for character traits, I'm in the debate... I have to say I'm a little sad we don't get to watch each other's progression. I love the story aspect of these kinds of games, but eventually I guess we'll get to see everything. Robert Spoiler:

He is probably third level given his age and accomplishments but it is up to you, he can be either second or third. If he is second we can put him near the top end of that xp. I’ll let you decide. Wealth is the standard for a third level character as per the PF core rules. You get one free trait either made up or from one of the Pathfinder Adventure Paths. Have a look at the pdf that I mentioned to Elora, you can download it for free. It is easy to see why Vincent is so protective and close to his charge, that is perfect for the adventure to come. Your explanation of the war torn lands that she is escaping from needs to take a few other things into account. First retaking her lands is very much a long term ideal, pbp’s are notoriously slow and I doubt we will ever get to do that on the boards. Her initial adventure centres on her grandfather, the Marquis Burnd and helping him. However that doesn’t mean we should forget the mainland and her home, I need to understand in a bit more detail how the politics of nobility led to her father being at war with another and how the wood elves fitted in. More of the Who Was Involved. What I need most of all is an adversary, the sort that may come after Alinuyn even as far as the Isles. As far as Vincent is concerned I’d like you to write up his code of paladinhood, the mantra of behaviour that acts as the fuel for his holy powers. Secondly can you try to headline your spoilers with who can read them? It will help, I wasn't entirely sure if I should be looking at "Armand". Then I realised I am the DM! Third I am having a bit of a brain storm on this whole being a duellist vs being a knight. I see the knights as being all platemail and lances, whereas you are more of a musketeer totally from a different century. How about you had a half-elf (woodelf) trainer since they naturally like to skirmish and use speed over strength. Maybe that could be the kernel of why the whole war against your Family started. Your father could have supported a small wood elf community or half-elf community that had no interest in the War. Maybe it was just one trainer, maybe even a blade dancer. Some more information that I have been mulling over. Is there anyway we can compromise a little on which person is related to the Marquis. Originally I was intedning on Ali being a half elf, the elven half coming from her mother's side (because if this is anything like most medevial socities succession travels through the men, so in order for her to be noble, her father had to be noble) It would have made for some nice role play eventually with me and mothman too. Maybe an uncle on her father's side?
This was my original thought: Alinuyn's mom was a wood elf, it was the reason they tried to stay neutral from the war for so long. Her parents met while her father was on a hunting expedition, as was her own group (she was a ranger). The two parties were both hunting the same quary and began to compete over the kill. Imagine, the epic final hunt scene, the young human warrior and the beautiful elven girl racing towards the stag, both knocking their lines at the same time and loosing killing blows to the stag. Looks pretty epic in my head at least :) I can also very easily see how this does not fit your vision, and if that is the case and it messes with your story too much, then she can be human and I get an extra first level feat... oh darn. And she can most certainly have a trainer who was a wood elf. The land her father held was very fertile, and would have probably been partial to the druids and rangers that helped keep life in balance and the crops good. I intended on her being skilled with a bow but not having that as her main form of offense (I play a lot of archers and I was leaning toward a dervish/duelist feel but if that doesn't work as well I can always play an archer, I do love them)Also, the knight's code finds all forms of long ranged combat less the honorable, and Vincent would have a problem with it :( In regards to reconciling the "knight" idea with the duelist idea, I was thinking about knights in the most basic sense in regards to their code of honor. Knights would often enter into one on one combats and duels, as you well know. One of the reasons I enjoyed the knighthood idea was that he/she did not fit into that norm, it is what makes her obviously different, despite her best efforts to hide, and gives all those great rp moments of "your a knight? you certainly don't look like a knight..." But Robert and I are going to look at the duelist PC again, and see if it really works, which it may not, and then I'll just go straight fighter. Wall of text; complete! Pick a masterwork weapon by the way. That can be a family heirloom either a weapon of practical nobility or one of wood elf grace. You choose. That is in addition to your characters wealth (after all she is a rich kid).

Not to mention they could have been close because the cousins could have gotten together for winters on the islands and springs in the grassy fields. I've been trying to figure how her uncle found out where she was and this is my thought: Last year she sent a ruby ring which her aunt had given her for winterfest to her uncle, with a note that told him she was alive, and masquerading as a boy, by Vincent's advice, in order to bide her time. Then he has a reason to know why she is pretending to be a boy and where she most likely is. He would search for her with her assumed name, Armand de Seul. Right the Marquis is definitely old, over fifty, probably nearer sixty, he has returned from the war crippled from battle. He was your grandfather's brother which neatly splits the the family in two, one on the mainland and one on the isles.
His daughters married well into the mainland nobility and have ostensibly sided with their new families against yours in the politics of loving or hating wood elves. All for expedience. One lasting memory is the trip the Marquis and his wife took once when you were growing up to see your family. Mostly you remember the lovely grandmother, her games, tinkling laughter, beautiful smile. But the Marquis gave lovely honey sweets. I like your solution to finding a way of contacting the Marquis. But perhaps you need to on the run for less time, not sure, otherwise what have you been doing with yourselves becomes something worth considering. Lastly your strength bonus gives you +2 to damage, not +3.
