Tales from the City of Opal
Game Master Patrick Curtin

This is my homebrew world Arcaia. This particular setting is the free city of Opal, a lush equatorial city set on the edge of an immense jungle rife with undead , ancient civilizations, and dinosaurs.

Choosing not to get involved with the discussion, San still gives a good chuckle at the banter going back and forth. He'll quickly scan the area with detect magic, however.

(Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4)

Ten Foot, boyed by the power of his god and his "remove fear" effect, looks up at the webbing with confidence, "they're not stupid enough to try and take me on!"

(Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4)

Joleesa looks up at the big man and grins. "That's the spirit. Now let's go find us some treasure to plunder!" She draws Raptorstrike and heads off towards the opening Vilya spotted.

Pat, Joleesa is leaving "Wheezy" and Lumien back with Karl now that he's staying up top. She didn't really want to take them underground into ruins last time, but had no choice. This time Karl can look after them. :)

(I AM THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA)

Wheezy and Lumien both chirp sadly as Jo and the rest leave the dock area, but they remain with Karl. The party enters the abandoned town, weapons at the ready. The ironwood that shields the temple's entrance looks to be 300 years olds if it is a day, it's extensive roots literally grinding the surrounding pyramid courtyard stones to dust.

Behind the large tree is a dark entry. Egan leans in with his torch and illuminates a set of stairs leading downwards. Cobwebs drape the entrance in a grey shroud.

Izkrael:

Spoiler:
There are several tracks Iz can discern, including what looks to be the spoor of undead. A rotted piece of cloth soaked in dried blood waves off a thorny bramble. A clawed footprint is half-recognizible. There might be ghouls about. Besides that, several discarded silk-wrapped monkeys and birds point to arboreal spiders in the vicinity: Big ones. Also, there are several different dino prints, as well as peccary hoof marks.

Tobias:

Spoiler:
It is hard to tell, but Vilya might either have a touch of alien realms in her bloodline, or she could be trafficing with unclean beings that are twisting her. Only Vilya herself could tell you for sure.

I'm assuming nothing radiated as magic, then, correct?

Oops, sorry, missed that ..

San's arcane sight detects nothing within range.

(Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1)

"Be cautious everyone, the unliving haunt this place." Izkrael says as he looks at some of the signs he found.

(Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4)

Izkrael wrote:

Joleesa turns in Izkraels direction with a grin and says, "of course there are... they wouldn't be jungle ruins if there weren't more undead about."

She then strides forward towards the opening, Raptorstrike held before he at the ready.

Joleesa Morvais wrote:

The dark cavernous stairway leads down into the darkness. Fat roots and spiderwebs bar the entrance. A layer of composted leaf mold blankets the stone steps. There is no sound but the occasional drip of water from the stalagtites forming on the roof.

Jo slices through the roots and webs, shaking a few palm-sized spiders off their homes. They scuttle off to the corners. The group descends twenty feet, ending up in a square room.

The room is empty, except for faded murals of Xoltec kings and gods. Scenes of gory sacrifice, cannibalism and necromancy leer from every side. The room seems to be a dead end

(Male Half-elf Ranger / 5)

Egan searches the wall opposite the entrance carefully, including the ceiling above, and the floor below.

take 20 on perception = 37

(Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4)

Ten Foot bravely stamps on any fist sized spiders who come near him and grins like an idiot who has just slain a dragon after doing so.

He peers into the chamber and has a look around Need any rolls?

Perception is always a good bet when delving in strange places. Keeps the spiders off you at least :P

(Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 4)

San keeps Ghostfetter at the ready, and peers around in the darkness (I've got low-light vision, but if need be, but I'll cast light on something).

Perception 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

(Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4)

Perception Check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23

Egan Coyle wrote:

Egan spots a bump in the wall. When he gets close and feels around it, it retracts. A grinding sound issues from the wall and a 10' panel slides back, revealing a dark corridor.

OK, if there is anyone who doesn't have low light vison of some sort you're gonna need some illumination.

(Male Human Sorcerer 5)

"I hate these temples. Too many murals about vivisection." Tobias casts three spells, and his crossbow begins to glow along with a bolt.

Casting Light on a bolt and and the crossbow itself, then casting Mage Armor.

(Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 4)

"Good call." San will use a charge from his mage armor wand.

"Excuse me for disliking temples that are probably full of even more undead hungry for the flesh of the unbelievers."

(Male Half-elf Ranger / 5)

Tiring of the talk, Egan enters the tunnel keeping a close eye out for any bad guys or bad things.

Perception (1d20+17=36, 1d20+17=25, 1d20+17=21, 1d20+17=18)Just to speed things up if he's leading the way. If Vilya wants to take the lead, Egan will yield it.

Darkvision for the win baby!

I tend to take 10's on my perception rolls for a total of
Ten Foot 13, if that is okay.

Ten Foot peers into the darkness and readies him self for possible combat as he calls on Cayden for Strength and Protection.

Ten Foot casts Bulls Strenght and Protection from Evil on him self, duration 4 minutes each.

He then takes up a position as close to the front as he can.

(Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1)

Perception1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10 (add +2 vs. undead)

Izkrael will take a position near the front, and keeps his eyes open for danger (though apparently not to well).

Egan:

As Egan looks down the passageway, he spots a differently-colored stone in the floor. It might be nothing, but many of these old Xoltec ruins have traps set in them ..

Vilya takes to the darkness ahead of the party as if she was born for it. Perhaps she was. In any case, she begins to scan the walls, floor, and ceiling for anything out of the ordinary, her elongated fingers probing every crack and crevice of the stone.

Again, to speed things up:

Vilya:

Spoiler:
At first, Vilya has a bit of trouble adjusting to the darkness. That annoying Egan is in front of her, blocking her view.

(Male Half-elf Ranger / 5)

Egan steps forward to the questionable area. "Watch this stone here" he states pointing downward. "It doesn't look right".

(Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 4)

"Maybe we should all step back while our multi-jointed, shiny-obsessed friend here takes a look at it?"

Vilya didn't see the discolored step until San points it out. She takes a moment and does find a trap attached. Small holes on the side of the walls suggest some sort of stabby blade or darts coming out at midriff level, She cracks her disturbingly-jointed hands and gets to work

Need a Disable Device roll.

Vilya sticks her tongue out at Egan.

"Beat that, nature boy."

(Male Human Sorcerer 5)

"Well, since that's out of the way, can we keep going now?"

(Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 4)

San flips Vilya the gold coin he promised, then adds, "yeah, let's keep moving, before Ten's enhanced courage wears off!"

(Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4)

Joleesa stifles a chuckle at the interaction between Sanvoros and Vilya, before moving off to have a better look around at their new surroundings for herself, at least as much as she can in the light available from Tobias' light.

Perception Check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

(Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4)

Ten Hustles along behind the group leaders, hand gripped firmly on his axe, he resists the urge to whistle merrily.

(I AM THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA)

The dank hallway leads further in. Grotesque carvings of fantastical demons and undead cover the walls, glistening with slime and centuries of mineral deposits.

The hallway ends in a large room. There is a square shaft in the center and three hallways leading off from the other walls. A faint meeping sound can be heard echoing through the stillness. A detrius of old bones and clothing sits in one corner.

Post a map soon!

(Male Half-elf Ranger / 5)

Egan just looks at Vilya and rolls his eyes, then searches the room to see if anything unusual makes itself evident. If Vilya attempts to take the lead he will let her, and will make sure to stay far enough away from her so as not to be caught up in any traps she "Disarms".

Take 20 for a 37 moving around to the right checking as he goes. Explore this room before going down any tunnel, but looking down each tunnel as he passes.

(Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1)

Izkrael draws his sword, and peers down the shaft. (Assuming this shaft is a hole and not a pole.)

Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18(+2 vs. undead)

(I AM THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA)

Egan sees Iz heading for the shaft Which is a hole, yes so he begins searching the slime-slicked walls.

Iz heads to the shaft ..

Mystery DM roll:

Spoiler:
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

Izkreal:

Spoiler:
Just before Iz reaches the edge of the shaft he hears a faint sound of scraping rock. His keen nose picks up the scent of something ...rotten ..eminating from the dark pit ...

>NEW MAP<

Tell me where you want your coordinates ..

(Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 4)

OH, joy ... a combat map! :-)

perception 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27

Assuming he hears or sees something in the shaft, San will move to get on the south side of it (q26).

(Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4)

Ten Foot starts to head over to the "detrius of old bones and clothing that sits in one corner." He draws his axe as he moves and stops a few feet short of it.

Still taking a 10 on perception checks for a total of 13.

(Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1)

Izkrael waves one hand in the air to get everyone's attention, then, holding his sword at the ready, he inches foward to the edge of the shaft.
If possible, he will also ready an attack for the first thing to emerge from the shaft.

Initiative 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Readied Attack w/ Curveblade 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20(+2 vs. undead)
Damage (if applicable) 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (5, 5) + 3 = 13 (+2 vs. undead)

Nice init!

Iz stalks in and when a feral snarling undead face pops up from the shaft's edge, hoping for an easy meal, it meets his blade. The creature screeches and falls back flailing into the yawning pit, but there is the sound of others meeping and shreiking through the corridors and out from the shaft lip.

OK, I'll get a map up soon, call out a starting position..

Egan: 21
Vilya: 21
Sanvoros: 20

Tobias: 20
Ten: 19
Ghouls:7 [yes seven. Lame I know..]

Several ghouls come from every hallway, and several more pop up from their hiding place around the central pit.

Post up them actions!

(Male Human Sorcerer 5)

Holding his crossbow in one hand, Tobias draws a wand and fires a single magic missile at the nearest ghoul.

Using the Wand of Magic Missile we picked up earlier. 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
