Preparation part 6

Spectral barrage recharged this round

The spectre suddenly reappears and unleashes its spectral barrage... or tries to as Graz promptly shoots it both arrows seeming to narrowly miss as the spectre's barrage covers them.

25 vs Graz's reflex doing 8 damage, 13 vs Havelock's reflex which misses, 16 vs Richard's Reflex doing 9 psychic damage, 20 vs NaDarr's reflex doing 7 psychic damage and 21 vs Nass's Reflex doing 9 psychic damage and all bar Havelock are knocked prone

The light dims for a moment and then Havelock looks around as the others try to get up.
Graz has to shove Richard off of him as he was hurled into him by the Spectre's attack and why he took damage not listed as psychic, the others get back to their feet and look around.

It takes a moment but it becomes apparently clear that the Spectre's attack was its last gasp as Graz's attack took it down.

Congratulations you have defeated the guardian of the Preparation room you have each earned 35xp what do you want to do now?

(Male Human Rogue Level 1)

did we get xp for the other encounter or just the stones? and Nass uses 2 surges and is back up to 24 hp

Nass takes a minute and breathes deep. This day has taken its toll on him and says "Maybe we should rest here for the evening and pick up exploration in the morning"

Nass Sylentstrike wrote:

Check on my avatar for the current xp totals, I should have posted what they are currently, the stones were the treasure for the initial encounter and as for the current one well let's just say the fighting part of the challenge is now over

(Male Human Summoner 2)

Nass Sylentstrike wrote:

"Why should we? We've barely done anything!"

Havelock glances around the room, his eyes coming to rest on the sarcophagus

"Of course, the burying of valubles along with the dead is a quite common practice."

(Male Human Rogue Level 1)

"That we have barely done anything but I have taken quite a beating and have seen more of my blood today that I care for. Besides I believe its getting late but should we press on lets at least take a short rest." Upon hearing the last statement from Havelock, Nass's eyes get a gleam and he says "I do believe your right. If your intrested in checking out the room let me give you a hand."

Your light reveals that the corridor leads into a chamber decorated by a simple stone sarcophagus upon which stands a winged stone statue.

The statue of the gargoyle rests upon the sarcophagus in a kneeling positions with both its hands held together as if in prayer.

The sarcophagus itself is very simple in appearance too much so, nothing to even say who or what was even interred here.

Perception checks from Havelock and Nass please

No Havelock doesn't see anything out of the ordinary except it looks like shifting the statue off of the sarcophagus is going to be a real pain...

(Male Dragonborn 1 cleric)

NaDarr stretches as he watches the others checking the sarcophogus.

"What did you find?"

(Male Human Summoner 2)

"I found out it's going to be a pain getting this gargoyle off the lid. Unless, of course, I decide to save us all some trouble and just blast it off..."

Would use Thunderwave, by the way. History, is this statue historically valuble, or can I just turn it into rubble? 1d20+9=18

(Male Human Fighter / 2)

Perception Check, 1d20+1=9
Richard takes a look around the room and doesn't see much of interest besides the gargoyle.
History Check, 1d20-1=11, Religion Check, 1d20-1=12
"Anyone think this gargoyle is significant?"

NaDarr wrote:

NaDarr:

Spoiler:
What are your trained skills?

Graz:

Spoiler:
The arms of the gargoyle look like they can be pulled forward

I will check tonight. I really struggle when I do not have an actual page in front of me. (Or I just suck :)

Don't worry about it, it took me quite a while before I found out holy symbols only apply to powers marked with the implement keyword and that was just one of the mistakes I made and I'm still learning!

"Hay Na'Darr the goyles arms look like they move, try pulling em forward".

Graz and Boe wrote:

NaDarr shrugs and pulls on the gargoyle's arm. "This is safe right?"

They slide forward... way too easily as a dull rumble shakes the room.

It then fades as two panels open on either side of the room.

Preparation Room Aftermath

(Male Human Rogue Level 1)

"Hmm...Left or Right?" Nass asks as he looks around. Thinking of what they have been through so far Nass takes no chances and draws his sword in one hand and a dagger in the other and waits while the rest of the group decides on what door to head through

(male Bugbear 1st level Ranger(archer))

"When in doubt go right, lest thats what my granpapy always said untill he walked right into an Valanar ambush".

Looking towards the winged praying gargoyle the panel on the left of it reveals what looks like a covered mirror, the panel on the right reveals a small chest with a plain staff resting next to it.

(Male Human Summoner 2)

"So they hid their goods in recessed areas in the wall. These things should be valuable if they went through the trouble to hide it."

Havelock Ebonwood wrote:

Havelock:

Spoiler:
The chest seems to hold something enchanted, the staff resting upon it is a staff of winter +1 however whatever the covered mirror is it radiates even more than both of these items together

(Male Human Summoner 2)

Havelock walks around the room, gaving at the treasure.

"Let's see, I'll take that *Takes staff*, and there are more goodies in that chest, and..."

He stares wide-eyed at the mirror for a few seconds before turning around and walking away.

"You know what, it's completely ordinary, so there's no need at all to take that cover off of it. So, don't."

(Male Human Rogue Level 1)

"Let me take a look at the chest might be trapped or locked" Nass say while stepping up and taking a knee and looks for any signs of traps while pulling out a thin wire from his wrist
Perception (1d20=16)
if any trap found
Thievery (disable trap if needed) (add 2 for thief tool) (1d20+11=30)

With the trap checking out of the way Nass tests the lid to see if its locked. If it is Nass takes the thin wire and begins the task of finding the release trigger.
Thievery to pick the lock (added 2 for the thief tool) (1d20+11=15)

didnt think it released so i rolled a second time if i got on first try disregard the bottom half

Fustrated that he didnt get the lock on the first try Nass pulls the tool out and takes a quick breather and begins his work again
Thievery to pick the lock (added 2 for the thief tool) (1d20+11=30)

(Male Dragonborn 1 cleric)

Graz and Boe wrote:

"When in doubt, belt the whelp. That's what my grampapy always said." looks like earlier post got et

Nass:
No trap on the chest it is however locked, the second attempt however succeeds

The chest when opened reveals five bags roughly the size of small sacks each.

(Male Human Rogue Level 1)

Placing the chest on the ground Nass says " Guys theres 5 sacks, 1 for each" with that Nass picks 1 up and opens it up a few feet away from the group and peers inside

Nass Sylentstrike wrote:

Three jingle with the sound of heavy coin, whilst the other two feel like they hold something that sounds like very small gemstones.

Nass can pick which one of these two two types he has picked up to examine

(Male Dragonborn 1 cleric)

Never in a rush, NaDarr lets everyone choose before him. He will take the last remaining bag.

NaDarr wrote:

The covered mirror really catches your eyes, well that and Havelock's remarks which make you wonder why he told the rest of you to leave it alone.

(Male Human Rogue Level 1)

Nass picks up a sack with the gemstone inside

Nass Sylentstrike wrote:

Nass:

Spoiler:
It holds about 20 small gems worth maybe 20-30 gold pieces each

(Male Human Fighter / 2)

"Toss one of those sacks here. It doesn't matter to me. I'm not in it for the riches, I'm in it for the glory and the ladies."

(male Bugbear 1st level Ranger(archer))

Same here, toss me a bag so we can get out of this place.

Richard the Boastful wrote:

The sack tossed to Richard is quite heavy and jingles with coins.

Spoiler:
The bag holds about 30 platinum pieces

Graz and Boe wrote:

Graz catches the bag tossed to him which also jingles with coins.

Spoiler:
Holds 30 platinum pieces

(Male Human Rogue Level 1)

Nass then hands the other 2 bags out and says "We got a choice here, split everything evenly or just keep our individual sacks" Nass clearly trying to grab a handful of platinum pieces as well as keeping some of the gems

(Male Human Fighter / 2)

"I'm happy with my haul, brews are on me when we've completed these menial challenges. Do you think there's something still in the sarcophagus under the gargoyle statue?" Richard taps on the sarcophagus with the hilt of his Greatsword and tries to hear if it's hollow. Perception Check (Listen) 1d20+1=20

Something taps back...

It looks as though whoever or whatever built this place made very sure whatever is buried beneath the gargoyle won't be going anywhere anytime soon...

(male Bugbear 1st level Ranger(archer))

"Whats up with the mirror, it maybe part of the test. Maybe we gotta use it to get to the next challange"?

(Male Dragonborn 1 cleric)

"And what's up with the tapping?" NaDarr is torn between investigating the mirror and investigating the gargoyle. He tosses the bag from one hand to the next, as if this would make the decision for him. Finally, figuring there is safety in numbers he stands next to GraZ and examines the covered mirror. perception 1d20=13

(Male Human Summoner 2)

Havelock gazes at the coffin for a few seconds in surprise before turning around to Graz and Nass. "What are you doing? Alright so it is magic, but I'm not talking about "slight increase in accuracy" level enchantments here. I talking about "tear out your soul" kinds of magic here!"

NaDarr wrote:

Its more of an Arcane or Religion check

(Male Human Rogue Level 1)

Nass slinks back away from the gargoyle and tries to hide in the shadows Stealth (1d20+9=27)
While drawing a dagger and a shortsword

(Male Human Summoner 2)

"Well, don't blame me if that mirror turns out to be a thing of unholy evil. I'll stay over here with Tapping Zombie. We're the only ones with any brains in this group."

Havelock kneels down next to the coffin and wonders what could be inside this.

Its very likely the corporeal remains of the spectre you just fought, even if you could break in would you want another fight on your hands when you haven't even seen whats' waiting for you in the next room?
(Male Human Fighter / 2)

How big is the mirror and what is covering it?
