Ceiling height?
The castle has no upper floors. So the ceiling is as high as the castle is tall. Let's say as five story building.

So... is the place actually illuminated now, that everyone can see so far?

No. That's why I put it in out of character commentary. Everyone's vision except yours is impaired and all sources of light are dimmed. Magic light is affected more than natural, though. I feel that this is the kind of information that can be shared without roleplaying in order not to waste time. Of course, if players think otherwise, we'll do it otherwise in the future. :)

(Male Human (Dorn) Wildlander / 1)

Makes sense, thanks for the clarification...

"We seem to be in some kind of massive hall," states Eyvindr flatly. "I cannot see the ends of it, whether length or width..."

Are there any support columns or anything like that?

"But there odd looking scratches on the floor over here, by the door... Eight of them, parallel... As if someone was dragged inside by the feet, but he, she or it tried to dig fingernails into stone..."

As Gillian mentions the awful smell, Eyvindr promptly unsheathes his sword. "For something to smell that strongly, it must be near," he growls...

Perception: 2 + 6 = 8 (10 vs. Fell); Sense Dead 10 ft special ability...

Nightflier:

Spoiler:

When Eyvindr became undead, did he lose his olfactory sense? Whether he has lost it or not, I figure that he would have still reacted in the same way to Gillian's observation...

(Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3)

Ilona slides a finger along the side of her blade as she whispers a few words. A soft rose glow spreads across the weapon adding to the llight.

Casting Light

"Everybody stay calm. Whatever's out there wants our fear. They waited this long for something to enter. Let's show 'em why"

Only Eyvindr can see, or only those with darkvision? I took your post to mean that if the character didn't have some kind of ability to see in the dark, then they couldn't see but the rest could.

Only Eyvindr can see clearly, since he is undead. The rest of you are alive, so those who have darkvision see better than those who don't, but everyone's vision is impaired and the sources of magical light are dimmed.

I'm gonna assume that Pete went to investigate unusual smell, since he's prone to cat-like curiosity. :)

Pete:
While the others huddle near the door, you decided to go forth and try to find out the source of that smell. Silently you venture into the foreboding darkness and after only couple of minutes that seemed like an eternity to you, you come upon a strange sight: A large pool or perhaps a fountain raised to your hight above the floor filled with stagnant and smelly water surrounded by corpses. They seem to be dwarves and there are seven of them. The mountain coldness and the dry air of this strange castle mummified them and their clothes is well preserved despite obviously long time that has passed. All of them have daggers sticking from the breasts and some of them are even holding the dagger hilts. It seems that they have taken their own lives.

Guys, anyone there?

(Male Erunsil (Snow Elf) Fighter 5)

Sky follows about 10' behind Pete as before. Without a light source, and with the dim lighting, even his keen night vision, is struggling to make out Pete at that distance.

(male halfling rogue 1)

Pete grabs a pebble and casts Light on it.

"Look! Dead dwarves in here. Long time dead."

Solvistania follows along quietly, her mind racing, trying to piece together the mystery of this place.

(Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3)

"We should move in formation, casters in the center, warriors in an outer perimeter, Sky and Pete, you seem to be our best trackers. Eys open, if you see anything call out the location and a warning. We move as a unit, we survive as a unit."

Ilona's tone takes on a clipped militaristic manner that carries a strange authority with it, her time in the military lending power to her words.

(male halfling rogue 1)

Pete already went off to investigate something, so obviously Ilona's orders didn't work on him. :-)

Solvistania controls the urge to rush forward to see what Pete is talking about, realizing belatedly they were all in considerable danger at this point. She follows Ilona's lead without protest, for now.

(male Dorn Barbarian 2, Spiritual Channeler 2)

Ragnar takes up the rear of the group, following without a word.

Hearing Pet yelling back about the dead dwarves, Chops resists the urge to run down to catch up with him. Instead, he waits with Ragnar and brings up the rear, with occasional glances at the cracked door.

Somehow you sense that this pool lies right in the center of the castle. Your dwarven senses seem to be unaffected by this darkness.

Gilian casts detect poison on the stagnant water.

"So what is it we were supposed to do here. Deliver the Elf brother ? Or is it just a trap on our way ? Why would they kill themselves if not to seal the doors and prevent something from using them to escape ?"says Gilian.

"The more I think about it, the less I like this place"

(Male Human (Dorn) Wildlander / 1)

Seeing Ragnar and Chops drop to the rear of the party, Eyvindr steps out 20' or so from his companions to cover the right flank. As the group finds the dead dwarves, he stands silently and continues to scan the area while the others try to determine what drove the mountain fey to their grisly fate...

Perception: 3 + 6 = 9 (11 vs. Fell)...

(Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3)

Ilona walks along the opposite flank scanning the area. As Gillian speaks she nods in agreement. "You and me both hon, this place is creepy. I can't help but think though, dwarf blood to open and maybe dwarf blood to seal, is it possible they did this to ensure what was here stayed here until someone specifc came?"

"I was always led to believe that the only thing that a Dwarf would kill themselves over would be if somehow that was a better way to spit in the shadow's eye than going down fighting." The big man pauses a moment. "Dwarves never die without purpose."

Solvistania walks over to the edge of the pool, and says "Show me these runes."

(male Dorn Barbarian 2, Spiritual Channeler 2)

I don't suppose the spirits of the dead dwarves are still here anywhere?

(Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3)

"Hmm...dwarf blood to open, maybe dwarf blood to seal? Maybe it was a ritual to bind this place shut until someone came to deal with whatever was in here, or to claim it."

Dang. I was thinking that was the case, but was afraid to give any plot away in advance. Lesson learned...Speak up, and you shall be rewarded

Chops, overhearing Sky'tor talk about the runes in the pool, walks over to check them out. As he looking at them, Illona mentions dwarf blood and gets an idea. He pulls his dagger out of his boot and pricks the tip of his finger, then flicks some blood into the stagnant water. He turns to Ragnar:

A dwarf would never kill himself unless he knew that it was the only way to prevent a terrible event, or as you say, to deny the Shadow some victory. If they would have lived, things may have been worse. I hope we didn't make their sacrifices in vain by coming here." Chops goes down on one knee, facing all of the dwarves, and underhis breathe, appears to pray in Old Dwarven:

Old Dwarven:
Sun Father bless you and thank you for your sacrifice. May it not have been in vain and may I have not disturbed your rest or undone what you gave your life to prevent. I wish upon you a peaceful afterlife.

(male halfling rogue 1)

Pete searches the dwarf corpses for anything of value.

There is nothing much of value on their corpses, except their amulets of yellow and white gold with motifs of sun and moon. Daggers that they have used to end their lives have gone to rust long time ago.

I don't know how you are running literacy and language. He can speak old dwarven with pidgin proficiency. Are you doing all of that pidgin stuff or are we just assuming everyone knows how to read in their language and has full fluency? If so, I have another language to learn because I spent my language bonus to upgrade from pidgen Trader Tongue to basic.

Spoiler:
Ragnar is trying to head toward the spirits, but he won't go too far. Also, Rgnar can't actually tell the difference between the living and the spirits of the dead. (At least not yet) When he sees them he'll think they're just people.

Ragnar:
You cannot feel precisely where the ghosts are, but it seems to you that there is some kind of pressure beneath your feet.

Chops suddenly slaps his head forcefully, trashing like madman. He turns around, looking at each of you in turn, mumbling something in some guttural tongue.

Old Dwarven:
What have you done! What have you done!

His eyes suddenly roll and he collapses, loosing his consciousness.

(Male Erunsil (Snow Elf) Fighter 5)

Sky:
Sky successfully revives him.
For a moment, Chops continues to mumble, and the he just shakes his head. "What..."

Chops:
Your head hurts like Izrador's hell. Your vision is blury and you feel like your brain is bruised. But when you look at those runes, you surprise yourself by reading them. It seems to be a kind of song:
"Seven hearts and seven knives
seven times evil shall bind
until seven ages come on buy
or till dwarven hands untie
the gates that seal and the blood that binds."

Solvistania moves over to assist Sky, a questioning look in her eyes, "What happened to him, is this some sort of magic?". She glances nervously around her, not liking this place.

"Ugh! Oh," Chops rubs his temples, squeezes the muscles around his neck. He is supine from his collapse, and tries to sit strait up. Failing that, he just mumbles, "Oh...its a song or poem. Possibly a riddle...uh, let's see if I get this right." Chops considers the words that he has read, repeating them in his head a few times as he translates them into the Trader's Tongue. ""Seven hearts and seven knives
seven times evil shall bind
until seven ages come on by
or till dwarven hands untie
the gates that seal and the blood that binds."

Then he says, "My blood opened the gates to this place. What does the rest mean?"

(Female Human (Sarcosan) Fighter 2/ Chaneller 3)

Ilona squats down next to Chops for a moment onehand on her sword. With the other she reaches out and ruffles the Dworg's hair.

"See, I knew you could do it," she says flashing him a smile.
