Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company
Game Master
Patrick Curtin
This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.
Barmy Kank shrugs, his ratty woolen cloak redolent of spicy food and cheap hiveshine. The roar of the large downspout muffles his words.
"The opening is chust a hole. You need to viggle through. It's a short distance. Inside it is empty, and quiet. It feels like someone is near you even vhen there is no one there. Like someone vas nearby, but not in a mean vay. I do not think there vere portals and I know not who vas vorshipped there."
"Many thanks, brother. If you ever feel lonely for home, please come by the Temple of the Sacred Flame. I give services most days."
If he seems to be the type who wouldn't be offended, Ekuur will give the man a few gold coins (around 5 or so).
Isaac nods, takes a quick glance up and down the street and slips Barmy Kank a lady.
"Thanks for the Chant, cutter. Think that'll be enough fer us to go on. What d'ye say, bloods? Take a peak at our friend's old kip? No need teh rattle our boneboxes when there's work t'get done."
Barmy Kank snatches up the small gold coins Issac and Ekuur give him and gives the group a gummy smile.
"Gut luck. Those godless are a mean bunch, bevare of them. I vould come to your temple priest, but I have been given a revelation that I vill soon be timetravelling back ... To The Future!"
With that, the old Athasian barmy melts into the foggy rain, his skull-tipped staff the last thing they see.
"If we went barging in there, they'd probably just jump through a portal or something. Still, I could probably get pretty close to them before they noticed. Where in there are they, exactly?"
Justin:
Spoiler:
According to Justin's senses they are roughly 20-30 feet inside from the doorway of the tavern.
Bethany watches the crazy manshuffle off and once he is out of earshot, she turns to the others. "So do we trust him or not. Personally I think he's crazier than a Ssintex in heat, but his information seems on the level. I'm not to keen on his description of needing to wiggle through the entry. That might make it a little tough with these." She shrugs her wings for emphasis.
"As far as barmies go, he seemed to have his brainbox in some kind o' order. Might have himself a few delusions, but any Cager's got those. I reckon we can trust his Chant. Let's take a peak at this bolt-hole and see what we ken manage."
Yep, church.
"We could set the place on fire and smoke them all out." Merle suggests then seeing the looks that some members of the group (probably) have on there faces adds "What?"
Justin just gives a slight shake of his head, (and one of his insufferably ubiquitous smirks) at Merle's comment. He looks her little brother in the eye and raises an eyebrow.

Justin nods, looking at 'nothing' in the building's direction.
"Yes, not being seen at all is better than a disguise. My friend is,... just inside the front door. Maybe 20 feet or a little more." He blinks his eyes, as if clearing his vision.
"Can you get in there that far without being spotted? Or do you need a distraction? Hm. Maybe I should shift forms and go in the back door anyway, just in case? I can renew the Whisper spell so we can stay in contact." Justin asks, more thinking aloud than actually asking,...

"Twenty feet? They aren't putting much effort into hiding, are they? I'll be back soon, one way or another." With that, Swire draws the hood of his cloak low over his head and heads for the tavern.

Swire crosses the rainy street, his dark Cager cloak drawn tight. He approaches the doorman. The demonic reptiloid straightens, a thin barbed tail lashing as he(?) spots Swire's approach.
"Hey how come when I run off into a dangerous situation I get chewed out by everyone but when Swire does it no one bats an eyelid?" Merle asks the others as she watches Swire from across the street.

I'll let you approach him Swire
Swire stumbles across the street, looking rather drunk. "Oy, cutter! This is a bub-house, right?"
"As far as barmies go, he seemed to have his brainbox in some kind o' order. Might have himself a few delusions, but any Cager's got those. I reckon we can trust his Chant. Let's take a peak at this bolt-hole and see what we ken manage."
Yep, church.
The old church is clothed in fog and shadow. The Athar still guard the entrance, and presumably the back as well.

OK, how you approaching this?
"All right, cutters. The big razorvine bush is our target. What we want is teh get in there, take a gander and give this creepy place the Laugh. Bethany, I reckon you could get a fine view o' how the guards are deployed around the perimeter. I'll slip in through the shadows and try to get under that razorvine an' report back. Drazek, you check from th' nearby rooftops, see if yeh can provide some back-up Darks to Bethany's scoutin'. Ekuur, you're my distraction: just circle the building every couple o' minutes. If the Defiers are worried about you, they won't catch me. What yeh thinkin', cutters?"
Drazek Darkholme(M Human Witchblade 6{Hexblade 1/Warlock 5(favored))
"Listen cutter, I just want some bub. You can look the other way just this once, eh?" Swire extends his hand, five gold coins in it.
Diplomacy, not counting any bonuses from the bribe: 1d20+8
The reptilian bouncer grabs the coins, then steps aside, bowing to the dark-cloaked Swire in a most sarcastic manner. Or so Swire assumes, having a hard time reading the emotion on the Tieftile's face.
"Assssss you wisssssh Sssser monkey. Welcome to the Mudflat Speckled With Fermented Fruit Tavern."
Swire takes a gander through the round front entrance. It's a packed scene, with some real exotic sounds and smells coming from the crowded room. Reptiles from kobolds to giant-sized dinosauroids chatter, screech and yowl. Swire sees several groups of khaasta, in fact they seem to be the majority species in the bar. He'd almost guess he sees the three they followed hunkered around a table shaped like a natural rock, smoking a large hookah and eating a plate of some fruit.
Issac heads out, slipping down a narrow alley a few buildings away and stealthily making his way to the rear area of the church. He stops in the shadows of an old tenement and peers over the small back yard. The two guards are still in evidence at the back wall. There is also a large razorvine bush that crawls up the left side of the rear wall. At its feet, a pile of old stones and rubble. The darkness makes it impossible to see any entrance there without a closer look.
"Agreed" With little more said than that, Ekuur heads a little closer toward the building, and begins his 'rounds'.
Ekuur begins walking in front of the building, making no effort to conceal himself. The first couple of passes, the guards look him over. The third pass, they begin to become agitated.
OK, any specifics or are you going to just keep walking by them?
heh heh... methinks I shoulda given Bethany a higher Perception... :/
"I agree. That sounds acceptable."
Bethany heads out into the dark Sigil sky. The rain lashes her as her wings carry her aloft into the cottony fog. She notes the roof guards are still in place, and they are now tracking Ekuur as he heads along the narrow road in front of the church.

Actions??
How close are the guys on the roofs and how many? I doubt it would be possible to take one or two out whle they're distracted, but just for hypotheticals sake... ;)

Bethany:
Spoiler:
Bethany spots four in all: Two on a building across from the church, two on the building adjacent to it

Noticing the men becoming agitated, Ekuur decides to take apage out of Barmy Kank's book. He stops relatively in front of the building, pulls out his copy of Hymns to the Great Conflagration, turns to a particularly long song titled "Soul Aflame", and begins singing in a loud, deep voice.
So the razorvine is directly in the guards' line of sight? No cover or anything nearby?
The back of the church is partial rubble and the back 'ayrd' is cluttered with debris. If you can pull off a DC 20 Stealth check you can sneak in past the guards and make it to the razorvine bush
Swire heads over to whatever seems closest to a bar and orders what the barkeep recommends, keeping an eye on the khasta all the while.
Mr Swire enters the bar. A hush descends momentarily, then the squeaks and howls resume. Swire heads for the bar, keeping an eye on the three khaasta. They now seem to be engaged in animated conversation, looking over in Swire's direction. Swire finds a spot at the bar between a bipedal triceratop-looking cutter and a snaky-looking berk who is weaving a bit. The barkeep, a khaasta, grunts when asked what is recommended, and shoves a bunch of half-rotted tropical fruit in a bowl at Swire
"Ssss. Fermented H(!)gnak'krik. Housssse ssssspecial. Five sssilver coinsss."
The bowl looks fairly unappealing, and carries a stench of hiveshine and moldy strawberries.
The cracked melody floats out into the ether. One of the guards strides forward frowning.
"Clear off berk! No singing, no panhandling, an' no squatting! Hit the blinds!"
Ekuur whirls on the guard, an almost-insane glint in his eye. "Heathens! Unbelievers! The Sacred Flame shall scour your unworthy souls from existance!"
Swire places five silver coins on the counter and begins to pick at the fruit. After all, he's eaten worse in his time.
Perception, to keep an eye on the khasta: 1d20+8
The fruit is heavily fermented. Swire has eaten worse, this is nothing compared to what the cart vendors down near the Hive District would sell you, or the sausage special at Osmonder's Meats. Still, the alcohol and rotted fruit smell is kinda whiff.
The khaasta seem to be staying put, but they are looking over at Swire quite often.
Ekuur whirls on the guard, an almost-insane glint in his eye. "Heathens! Unbelievers! The Sacred Flame shall scour your unworthy souls from existance!"
The armored guard unsheathes his greatsword.
"I'll scour you right to yer bones if you don't clear out right now barmy!"

Oh, I just realized I had forgotten to add my Favored Terrain bonus to my stealth check earlier, so this one will be at a +13.
Drazek Darkholme(M Human Witchblade 6{Hexblade 1/Warlock 5(favored))
After taking a moment to enjoy the view of Bethany lifting off, Drazek dahes into the shadows, scaling a wall and running along the rooftops, taking a circuit around the temple.

Perception Check:1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
Bethany watches Drazek as he climbs up the wall and as he creeps over the rooftops. She wonders to herself whether or not they could take out some of the guards by themselves and so makes sure to keep her eyes peeled for any of them taking an interest in either herself or Drazek's scouting activities.
Happy Anniversary Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company
In a world where most PBP threads don't last a week never mind a year the Silver Rose has bloomed now for two years. Hats off to you Patrick Curtin, You did one heck of a job, and even if you don't return I'll always be thankful for the fun I had here :D
I of course hope you do return, the misadventures of a tiefling duskblade and her sometimes companions are just too much fun to give up, but the ride has been fun in no small part to your tireless efforts. So hats off to the Silver Rose and hats off to you Pat! Happy Two Year Anniversary and I do hope you return to us soon :)
Thank YOU Karrin/Guy, for all your participation during the last two years, and your willingness to take a chance on an unknown DM. I am happy that things lasted as long as they have, and I just want to put it out there that I do not consider this a dead game, I merely need some time to take care of issues. I fully expect to return in about a month's time. Thank you for your kind words.
I'll throw my happy 2 CP in as well, great job to the Dungeon Monkey!
And I am thrilled to hear that you plan to return! I hope all goes well. (I shall use this time to embroil myself in yet MORE pbp goodness that i don't have time to properly participate in!) ;P
But 3 cheers to the Silver Rose and it's pages! Long may they be read! :)
Swire finishes off the fruit and stands up to leave, making sure to lock eyes with one of the khasta as he walks out.
Assuming they don't attack when they recognize him...
Swire makes his way back to the party.
The Khaasta look long as Swire leaves, but make no move to follow him. He arrives back at the group without incident. The rain begins to deepen even more, becoming a sheet of chill brown that soaks everyone pervasively.

Drazek runs up to the tops of the five-and-six storey buildings that make up this neighborhood. He spots a few crossbowmen, and manages to stay clear of them. Bethany tries her best to stay quiet and hidden as she hovers fifty feet above him.
