"I feel fine, but I must step carefully. I cannot retreat effectively, if it comes to that. I think a cautious approach, like last time, is still in order. I agree that the curse came from the crypt and should be addressed or at least investigated there."

Ka'kara, with a obviously irritated and upset look, peels a strip of papery skin off her cheek, "I'll pick you up and carry you Lenna, should we need to retreat again." She studies the shed skin carefully for signs it's taking her tattoos with it.

(Female Halfling Bard 6)

"Course we could head back to town and try and get cured before doing this. After all part of the deal for us doing this was Getting a cursed lifted Having that done only to be cursed on the job they sent us on seems like a bit of a con to me." Tika says this sounding more than a little miffed.

" You don't know High Priest Tharban much , do you ? Better to go in the cave now and see what he will ask us to do after ..."

Supposing that you are pressing on, let's have that marching order.

You reach the cave somewhat the worse for wear but without further incident.

Assuming the healing check wasn't successful:
After examining the various symptoms the group members are showing, Lyria shakes her head while muttering to herself. Realizing that no one understood her, she repeats herself, this time with a louder voice: "These ailments are like nothing I've seen before. I know it's probably not going to make you feel better, but it's almost like you're turning into undead yourselves. I'm truly sorry but treating this seems to be beyond my powers".

Marching order: Lyria will take the third place in marching order, although she would move to second if there's no one who wants it.

How's this?:

  • Ka'kara
  • Badru
  • Lyria
  • Rhianna
  • Roylenna
  • Artival
  • Tika
  • Mahaffy

Hitters up front, eyes in back, soft squishy spellcasters in the middle? ;-)

"I suggest we not proceed beyond the idols until we know if Lyria's spell can dispell the darkness. Even if nothing comes to meet us at the door, I hesitate to push in, fearing a trap from the intelligent denizens within."

  • If we could get a spell and song effect list going for what we will have running when we enter, that would be helpful. I think Badru will be just ahead of Ka'kara because she has reach (with Roylenna's enlarge) and can attack over him. He also has a better AC.

Sounds about right. I can certainly do my best to protect your knees :P

Rhianna will put up mage armor and false life (for 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 hp) again, but she's noticably lacking in party buffs.

    Sorry, missed this.

    Lyria:

    Spoiler:
This is clearly the result of taint, an affliction from coming in contact with places or creatures of great evil. If caught early it can be combatted with Remove Disease, but your friends are probably so far gone as to need more powerful magic. You can pray for and prepare the spell Detect Taint as a first-level spell if you like.

I'm going to be brutaly honest here the entire spontanious curse with no warning especially on low lvl characters is not something I agree with so I'm just going to drop out of this game.

    Tika

    Spoiler:
Sorry to hear that. The curse was meant to be more of an inconvenience, and there has indeed been warning, since the exact same thing occurred the last time you entered the cave.

That being said, I've enjoyed gaming with you.

    (Male Human Sorceror 6)

Arival casts a spell of protection on himself once the group gets to the mouth of the cave. Mage Armor

    (Female Halfling Sorcerer 6 (celestial))

When they indicate they are ready to enter to the cave, Roylenna begins casting - after a seemingly long arcane formula, the barbarian woman begins to grow once again. Hardly stopping for breath, she casts another spell and everyone feels a vague sense of peace wash over them for just a moment.

    Enlarge Person on Ka'kara
    Bless on the entire party

    A list like this?

  • Badru - Bless
  • Ka'kara - Enlarge Person, Bless
  • Lyria - Bless
  • Rhianna - Bless, Mage Armor, False Life
  • Roylenna - Bless
  • Artival - Bless, Mage Armor
  • Tika - Bless
  • Mahaffy - Bless

I assume Inspire Courage is coming -- I'll let Tika update the list when the time comes. And, of course, any other spellcasters, too.

  • (Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge)

Tika will probably not be joining you.

As you enter the cave you hear the now familiar shuffling sound and you notice that Lyria's magic does nothing to lighten the cave.

While still walking towards the cave, Lyria turns to her new friends. "Actually I think I do recall hearing about an affliction such as yours. I believe your symptoms were caused by taint, which is a kind of curse. Getting close to that cave should probably taint us all again, simply because of the great evil that emanates from it, especially inside it. The worse thing is that regrettably I cannot reasonably keep all of us free of this curse, as it is beyond my powers".

While moving closer to the cave, Lyria tries casting one of her spells to lighten up the area, but her spell doesn't seem to have any effect inside the cave. "This is definitely not a good sign. The evil in this place is too strong for my spell to work. We're not welcome here, and I think those sounds make it even clearer".

I have another bless spell if needed, but not much other than that except for heals.

    (Male Human Sorceror 6)

"Hopefully we can take care of the taint by cleansing this cave. I'm getting tired of not seeing clearly," Artival said.

Resistance might help as we leave the cave...? Not much, but some, anyway.

Is it time for initiative again?

Those lists are great, thanks Roylenna.
    Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 12

    (Male Dwarf Rogue 5)

    Initiative 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

    (Female Halfling Sorcerer 6 (celestial))

    Initiative 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12

    Guess so... Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

    (Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge)

The zombies go on 3. I'll post more when I get home from work.

    (Male Aasimar Paladin 2)

    Initiative 1d20 ⇒ 1

    (Male Human Sorceror 6)

    Initiative 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

    (Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge)

I guess we can use something like the old combat map. There is one large zombie coming at you in the first round. Everyone except Badru gets to take a shot at it if you like. It's coming from the northeast and will end its move at a point where it can reach Badru with its 10 feet reach. Note that it's not flatfooted as it moved in the round before (before you could see it).

Hope that's enough for you to decide on what to do.

While hearing the shuffling sound coming from within the cave, Lyria readies her crossbow and loads a bolt into it, aiming to the general direction the sound comes from. At the moment she sees movement at the edge of the small area of light penetrating the cave's darkness, she corrects her aim and releases her bolt. The bolt flies true, hitting the big zombie in its shoulder, not seeming to cause much damage. Gritting her teeth, Lyria loads another bolt in her crossbow.

    1d20+3=19, 1d8=2

    (Male Human Sorceror 6)

Artival knew the best way he could contribute against the foul undead, namely using his ranged lightning ability. He throws sparks in the large zombies direction, hoping to keep it from closing with his friends.

    Attack Elemental Ray1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15

    Damage from same 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Hmmmm, does that mean it's out of range of Ka'kara's 10' reach? I am assuming she is positioned similarly to last time (between the pillars). If she is out of range she'll suggest to Badru to step to the side to lure it closer.

    (Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge)

That would depend on whether Badru is standing before or beside Ka'kara. She probably could take 5' step and bash it anyway.I'll let Ainvar place you more exactly. You won't get an AoO in any case.

Ok, he it is then. Not raging yet.

    Greatsword attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
    Damage: 2d8 + 7 ⇒ (7, 6) + 7 = 20

Since we have a map with coordinates available, can I have everyone tell me where they want their character to start? Including the big zombie, of course.

    (Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge)

Will place the ogre according to Ka'kara's and Badru's positions. Correction: Badru also can take a stab at the ogre before it can act again.

    (Male Dwarf Rogue 5)

Mahaffy trust his friends to take care of this menace . He will put himself in H6 to block any rear attack

I'm thinking I5 sounds good. And with a single target...

Rhianna sees the large zombie step into the light, and all but squeals with delight. "Their behavior is repeating with regard to similar stimuli! Excellent! Now, let's see if they continue to respond the same to my evocations!" She points her hand and says, "Veri yslou ra jeseza!" as a beams of burning fire erupts from the tip and sears through the darkness. Scorching ray at the big zombie as it comes in. Ranged touch attack, including bless: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7, damage 4d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 2, 5) = 11. Unfortunately, all that burns is the air, as the ray goes wide. With an angry stomp of her foot, Rhianna snaps, "Oh, for Nethys' sake!"

    (Male Human Sorceror 6)

I can't find the map, but I will stand near Rhianna, to get a clear shot and stay out of melee as long as possible.

My action is in the earlier post.

A scientist should be disspationate . Emotions cloud the results of experiments:)

Lyria will stand behind Badru and Ka'kara, outside the zombie's reach.

Lyria keeps some distance from the zombie, touching her holy symbol for strength.

    robin wrote:

She tries, she really does. But blowing things up is so exciting, you know? ;)

    (Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge)

Badru (obviously) delays and the dead ogre takes a swing at Ka'kara for 16 points of damage. Three orc zombies move within range from the north. Ka'kara gets an AoO on one of them. You are all up again.

    Ouch!

    AOO on orc zombie: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
    damage: 2d8 + 7 ⇒ (1, 7) + 7 = 15

    Raging attack on ogre zombie: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17
    damage: 2d8 + 9 ⇒ (3, 5) + 9 = 17

    Cleave another orc zombie: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14
    damage: 2d8 + 9 ⇒ (8, 6) + 9 = 23

Going into a rage the barbarian returns the favor to the zombies.

    (Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge)

Yup, that would be enough to take them all out. Just one more orc zombie to go. Goblin zombies coming up behind, but not in range yet.

Rhianna shakes her head. "Maybe this is will work this time...?" she murmurs, making a different gesture with her hand before pointing it at the remaining orc zombie. "Kro ‘slou ra jeuza!"

    Disrupt undead ranged touch attack, with bless and Point Blank Shot (which I forgot last time): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7.

    (Male Aasimar Paladin 2)

Sorry I'm late for the party. Just got home from traning in TX and was laid with hayfever for a few days. All better now.

Badru stands in front of Ka'kara and to her right. I will delay my initiative to the top the next round effectively putting me at 20.

Badru watches Ka'kara slice through the undead as they approach, waiting for the proper time to strike. Badru scans the back of the cave for anything that might be directing the undead.

I'll wait for the goblins to get close before attacking.

    To Hit w/ bless 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
    Damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

    (Male Human Sorceror 6)

"Hey, I can do that too," the sorceror says after observing the wizard cast a damaging spell at the advancing undead. He sends a crimson ray toward the closest zombie.

    casting Disrupt Undead

    Attack 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
    Damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Lyria quickly estimates the situation after the ogre zombie hits Ka'kara. Closing her eyes, she concentrates while muttering "Sana parvum" again and again to herself, as her right hand shows a tint of blue. She opens her eyes and quickly discharges the healing energy on Ka'kara, which is standing right in front of her.

Cure light wounds on Ka'kara, heal her for 6.
    Cure light wounds (1d8+2=6)

    (Male Human (mostly) Mystic Theurge)

Rhianna's ray just misses the undead orc, but Artival's strikes true, searing the rotting flesh. Badru has difficulty discerning even the advancing goblins in the preternatural darkness.

Roylenna and Mahaffy to go, then the zombies.
