Manfred avoids getting crushed.

You hear shouting and stomping as the guards cut through the webs and enter the ballroom.

(m Half-orc Cleric/Barbarian 4/1)

Frustrated at not being able to get a crack at the monstosity and feeling the divine blade of Gorum wink out of existance, Hru does the only thing he can. "Gorum keep this warrior in battle!" he cries reaching out to Manfred's back.

Cure Moderate wounds spontaneous cast for Zone of Truth (on Manfred) 3d8 + 4 ⇒ (4, 6, 2) + 4 = 16

You hear some horrific screaming coming from the ballroom and some confused shouts. The screaming stops as quickly as it started and the babble dies down. A loud voice demands, "What the hell was that and where did it go?"

Andoran (Male Human Rogue 6)

I take it we did close the secret door?

I gesture up the stairs, "hurry," I hiss softly.

"And quietly."

Galadar wrote:

Yes, the secret door is closed. Crepitus was on the other side.

(Female Half-Elf Rogue 3/ Urban Ranger 2)

"Damn! Sounds like the guards got in and met up with whatever we were fighting in there. From the lack of combat sounds I'm betting Gal adar and Eria are hiding but they're pinned down. "

Liandra reslings her crossbow, pulling out her khukri. "Two options, we all go back and give the Baron more prep time or Knotty and I go after him while you two go rescue them and follow us. Whatever we do it needs to be quick."

(Male Halfling Transmuter5)

I think Galadar and Eria are with us?

"Don't have many combat spells left, a few scrolls and potions, mostly the ones in my mind are to get away after the battle. If I fall take them."

Knotty quickly points out to the others his scrolls and potions arranged alphabetically at his belt. Read the profile as and when.

"Eria has been poisoned by that demon. Can anyone help her?"

Galadar and Eria made it in through the secret door before it closed. They are now right behind you.

There is silence in the ballroom now. Someone speaks and then another shouts for him to be quiet.

(Female Halfling Cleric 5)

Eria stands with a somewhat befuddled look on her face looking as if she has forgotten something but cant remember what it is

It occurs to me that Eria probably left her bow in the throne room since she wouldent have thought to pick it up and I dont think anyone else did.

Andoran (Male Human Rogue 6)

"Thanks for the concern Liandra," I whisper, "We're here. A little less shouting and a little more moving. I don't want to have to kill more of the guards than necessary." I once more point up the stairs and make encouraging little walking movements with my fingers.

"The baron is still up there, right," I whisper.

(Male Halfling Transmuter5)

Thanks for making me laugh out loud, Kevin. Very dry stuff.

So, up the stairs? Precautions?

Precautions. Right. We send Hru up first. ;)

Momentarily sheathing my kukris, I slip my tanglefoot bag into my hand and load my crossbow.

Glad you enjoy it. Never realised till now how difficult it is to play a very low int character.

Eria at this point refuses point blank to move her lips slowly move as if it is taking every ounce of concentration to form words "Mind.....Hurt....Time.....Need......Think."

(Female Half-Elf Rogue 3/ Urban Ranger 2)

"Oh bloody hell, Manfred throw her over your shoulder till she can count to five. We need to get that bastard now."

Another panicked set of screams come through the secret door from the ballroom followed by confused sounds and wailing.

(Female Half-Elf Rogue 3/ Urban Ranger 2)

"Sounds like that little monster is keeping the guards busy, shall we?"

Liandra heads in the direction in which the Baron was last seen fleeing.

Andoran (Male Human Rogue 6)

I follow after Liandra.

Liandra and Galadar enter a large octagonal chamber with a 20' high ceiling. Painted lanterns cast red light over long bookshelves, wooden chests and two enormous worktables.

A large chalk pentagram occupies the center of the room.

A pile of corpses, many with limbs removed, leans against one wall.

You do not see the baron.

Sir Manfred picks up Eria and carries her up the stairs.

(Female Halfling Cleric 5)

Eria lets out a small gasp of suprise at being grabbed and almost instantly starts to struggle "Go.......let.......time.......need" She manages to quietly say.

(m Half-orc Cleric/Barbarian 4/1)

Hru pauses outside the chamber calling on our Lord in Iron. "AID ME! GORUM! BLOOD AND SOULS FOR GORUM!!"

Casts Bulls STR on himself

Turning to Liandra "I have nothing to return Eria to the battle...tomorrow I can ask Gorum again for such."

With a sharp intake of breath he prepares to search the chamber.

Spoiler:
A scroll of remove curse, a scroll of use disease and a scroll of lesser restoration.

(Male Halfling Transmuter5)

"Hru, there is a scroll of lesser restoration, it looks divine, can you use this. How about the remove curse one too?"

Eria/GM

Spoiler:
Is that a Use Disease scroll or a Remove Disease scroll? The first one sounds nasty.

Hru's eyes flick away from his intent on the room to Knotty. Holding the scroll up "Yes, this is what I had in mind" Taking the scroll he reads the words aloud, they appear to be an appeal to Erastil. He then says "May your blades find the heart"

You want to make a perception check to search the room, Hru?

1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18 Perception

Hru warily canvasses the room for any sign of the Baron, battleblade at the ready.

Searching the chamber reveals that Baron Vendikon has been conducting some pretty horrible experiments here.

Knowledge (arcana) DC 15:

Spoiler:
The dismembered bodies, surgical equipment, and texts on forbidden experiments hint that the monstrosity that you faced on the stairs was built by the Baron from the bodies you saw in the corner.

Knowledge (local) DC 15:

Spoiler:
The pile of bodies in the corner belong to various races and ethnicities but by their dress and features are not local to Andoran or Cheliax.

Knowledge (history) DC 15:

Spoiler:
The Baron's library contains texts on the history of the inner sea that are written from a Chelish perspective. Most of them were written in Cheliax by revisionist historians. Several of them are personally signed by the authors and wish the Baron 'to find himself on the path to power' or 'recognize the strength that order brings'.

The collection of scrolls includes deep slumber (2), hold monster, hold person, gentle repose (3), summon monster I, summon monster II, summon monster III, touch of idiocy, and vampiric touch. The notes would be useful to someone attempting to create a flesh golem but are incomplete.

You do not see the Baron anywhere.

Andoran (Male Human Rogue 6)

I have no knowledge of such things....er, I have NO knowledge, that's what happens when you're raised in the Cinderlands. It's an Urglin thing..

(Male Halfling Transmuter5)

Knowledge (Arcana) 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21, and Knowledge (History) 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12

"So he made them himself, this is the Grimoire of Flesh and Strength, Constructs and Guardians. Our Baron cut up the bodies and built himself a golem. Shows a lot of arcane talent, he does."

Knotty casts [i[detect magic[/i] and sweeps the room looking for stray signatures not already accounted for. He spends three rounds on each quadrant to make sure that the Baron has gone.

"Maybe he is here, otherwise he may have bugged out."

Then the little wizard checks out the scrolls, putting most of them in his tunic.

"Eria, can you bring in a wolf to scent for Vendikon here? If it were me, I'd still be here listening and watching."

(m Half-orc Cleric/Barbarian 4/1)

After checking the room thoroughly and finding nothing, suddenly Hru's eyes bulge like he's swallowed a stirge and with a muttered curse under his breath he checks the ceiling.

you get me once shame on you, twice, shame on me, ;) and are there any other exits?

A thorough search of the room reveals no sign of the baron. There is a trace of conjuration magic but it is rapidly fading.

This was clearly not a bedroom but a laboratory.

The noise continues to come and go from downstairs, but you hear nothing to indicate that they have discovered the secret door.

(Female Half-Elf Rogue 3/ Urban Ranger 2)

"So Knotty, is that a binding circle, a telportation circle or a summoning circle?"

Andoran (Male Human Rogue 6)

Is there any room up here for a secret door or chamber or does the room take up the whole tower top?

Galadar wrote:

The laboratory takes up the entire tower top. It's even bigger than the ballroom as the ballroom had space for the secret stairs.

(Male Halfling Transmuter5)

Knotty shrugs. "Eff knows. He's gone, Liandra but he may be back. I could sit on my arse reading for a while to get some answers or we could leave and try to find the missing Baron. That's twice he's got away. I doubt he has many other teleports left."

"But tomorrow, he'll be ready for us again."

(Female Halfling Cleric 5)

"If not here then where he go?" Eria aks out loud

(Male Halfling Transmuter5)

"Probably to gather some more guards."

Andoran (Male Human Rogue 6)

"Most likely. Did he leave anything useful up here?"

Are there windows we could use to exit the tower if we were interested in avoiding the stairs?

Sir Manfred posts himself at the top of the secret staircase, watching for an assault from below.

(m Half-orc Cleric/Barbarian 4/1)

if everyone is within 30ft

"Gorum prepare us for battle!" cries Hru and raising the huge battleblade a ripple in reality courses out to 30 ft.

channel positve:healing

2d6 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4

everyone gains 4 hp (apparently Gorum's favor wanes from lack of battle)

No windows. Gorum doesn't like cowards who crawl out through windows.

Other than the treasure already described, the contents of this room would be useful only to you if you wanted to put together a flesh golem with big metal hooks for arms. (Don't we all want to do that?)

(Male Halfling Transmuter5)

So the roof and walls are all stone and there are no windows or skylights? That narrows down our choices here. I wasn't planning on going back the way we had come.

Knotty takes a moment to study the circle carefully. "If they cannot find us then perhaps they will be gone when we go back the way we have come."

Knowledge (Arcana) 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22. Is this pentagram some means of escape? Could Knotty use it to get everyone away?
