I Want to Play a Game

Friday, December 15, 2017

PaizoCon 2017 had all the gaming, seminars, and announcements you have come to expect from Paizo's official convention, but it also featured a very special addition: the inaugural PaizoCon Puzzle Hunt. Any could grab this packet of puzzles and mind-benders and solve them in their spare moments, with the hopes of winning a special prize! A lot of you participated, and everyone who got the correct final answer went home with a booster pack of Pathfinder Miniatures. We had a blast presenting it to the con attendees, and thanks to the magic of the internet, we are proud to present it here for you for free! Check the link below, which contains everything you need to participate in this Starfinder-themed puzzle hunt... except, of course, your wits. Unfortunately, we can't offer any prizes for completing this puzzle hunt, but if you can make it to PaizoCon 2018, we should have a brand-new set of challenges for you to tackle!

What is a puzzle hunt?

A puzzle hunt is a series of linked puzzles, with the answer to each being a word or phrase. Those words and phrases are used in one more puzzle to generate the hunt's final solution. Figuring out how this last puzzle works is part of the challenge!

Who made this, anyway?

Why, that's us, of course! Both of us have a deep, abiding love of puzzles, ranging from crossword puzzles to the spatial puzzles you might find in an escape room or the video game The Witness. We figured we had solved enough puzzles over the years that we could design our own and present them in this puzzle hunt format. We tried to get as many styles of puzzle into the hunt as we could: cryptograms, word seeks, anagrams, etc.

The art for the Starfinder iconics featured in this puzzle hunt is by Remko Troost.

What do I do if get stuck?

First, put the puzzle down and come back at it in an hour or so with a fresh mind. Perhaps you'll spot something you hadn't seen before. Be sure to reread the instructions at the top of the page; sometimes clues are hidden in there! If all that fails, feel free to ask for a hint on the messageboards. There's no shame in getting a nudge from a fellow solver, and perhaps you can help her in return with a different puzzle!

Is Keskodai's letter missing? Or is there a problem with my PDF viewer?

Paizo Employee Franchise Manager

Keskodai's letter appears in a different publication than the puzzle hunt document. I'm not sure if that document has been released digitally, however. Investigating...

That is weird! We'll try to fix this tomorrow. Sorry for the inconvenience, but hopefully you are enjoying the other puzzles in the meantime!

Good to have some free SF puzzlez stuff (and their impending revisions) out there. ;)

I've figured out everything except Keskodai and Raia. Is that copy of Keskodai's letter still coming? Please say yes! My son and I are really enjoying these. Kudos on the Quig puzzle, btw. That one was awesome!

Raia I've got, Iseph is giving me some trouble, found 15 words, but I think 2 might be wrong. Raia's was a lot of fun once you got the hang of it.

I've got Navasi, Iseph, and Obozaya. I've been putting off Quig, Altronus and Raia for the moment because I think they will make my brain hurt. Obviously, can't really do anything with Keskodai without that letter.

But overall this is quite fun!

Thanks! I actually used to edit puzzles like Quig's for a living over a decade ago, so it was a return to form for me.

We are working on the letter thing!

Would you like a hint? What words did you get?

Hey folks! The PDF has been updated to have the correct pages inside. Sorry about that!

Amazing puzzlesmithing, Jason and Joe! Thank you.
I had a lot of fun solving the individual puzzles and the meta-puzzle. Even without the page to figure out Keskodai's word, I could guess what the missing letter had to be.
(Confirmed, now that I've solved Keskodai's puzzle. Thanks, Chris, for adding the missing page.)
The chance to solve a new set of puzzles is a good incentive to go to PaizoCon 2018!

Glad you liked it! I don't like to make promises I might not be able to keep, but the PaizoCon 2018 Puzzle Hunt is going to be bigger and better! Well, it will probably have the same number of puzzles.

Joe and I already have a lot of great ideas, and with any luck, we can turn them into interesting and challenging puzzles!

I got to solve these earlier thanks to Pirate Rob sending me a copy of them. (Thanks Pirate Rob!) Thanks for writing them - they were really fun to solve!

This was really fun! Is there an answer key somewhere that we can check to see if we got everything right?

If someone could help me out with a couple of these, that'd be great.

With Iseph's puzzle, I'm not sure which verbs I have to find (e.g. I can find both trade and tiptoe, but it says I only have to find one T verb)

With Raia's puzzle, am I correct in assuming that the words that "belong" are spell names, since they're from her spell cache?

Nevermind on Raia's, I figured it out. Just need to do Iseph and Quig's puzzles.

For Iseph, remember that they said the verbs you are looking for are "furtive"!

Only just found these but they are driving me nuts, in a good way! Would be nice to have an answer key at some point, I'm pretty sure I'm getting some of Iseph's words wrong.

Navasi's Puzzle solution - do NOT click this if you don't want the answer:
I'm pretty sure Navasi's puzzle spells out Diplomacy.

By taking the hex shapes behind each iconic's illustration in each puzzle and fitting them into the final grid map (there is only one way to do so) and then entering each puzzle's answer into those shapes (starting with the hex with the circle in it and moving in the direction indicated by the arrow), you end up with seven letters in the hexes marked by planets. Those seven letters can be anagrammed to form the word[/i] CAPTAIN
