The King is Dead! Long Live the Queen!

Friday, March 10, 2017

Welcome to the next installment of Pathfinder Battles: Crown of Fangs reveals. This week, I'm starting with the Gray Maiden Captain. This figure is based off of art from the newly released Curse of the Crimson Throne Adventure Path Omnibus. WizKids did a great job in getting the details right for her plate mail. Great for anyone looking to play a female badass, whether it be cavalier, fighter, inquisitor, cleric, or war priest. The Gray Maiden Captain is an uncommon medium in the Crown of Fangs set.

Next we have Trinia Sabor, an iconic NPC from the Curse of the Crimson Throne Adventure Path. I love the texture of her chain shirt. While Trinia is a bard, this miniature could easily be used as a rogue, bard, investigator, or slayer. Trinia Sabor is a rare medium.

Lastly, but far from being close to the least, we have Queen Ileosa Arabasti, complete with her crown of fangs and awesome looking rapier. As the arch villain of the Curse of the Crimson Throne Adventure Path, she is designed to ruin your player's day, and enjoy doing it. This figure could be used as a sorcerer, wizard, rogue, or any noble character or npc. Queen Illeosa is a rare medium, and a definite must have figure for your Pathfinder collection.

Also, be sure to check out the fantastic Pathfinder Battles: Deep Cuts miniatures now available for preorder on paizo.com!

... Trinia is one of my favorite NPCs and holy crap is her face ugly here. This makes me cry.

Are those batons she's holding.

That's a little snug fitting for plate mail.

It's magical plate :)

Long may she reign

Michael, the third mini was already revealed in the very first set preview by Erik on december 2nd 2016. ;-)

Maybe you could reveal an additional mini (next week)?

Trinia doesn´t look good imo, but i recognize her necessity in this set.
She´s also a rare, so one per case is okay.

The Gray Maiden Captain has the wrong rarity, i can´t use more than two of them (if i cut away the weapon and use one as a spellcaster, but i´ll probably get 3-4 in a case.

25 minis and the "Court of the Crimson Throne" incentive remain unrevealed and the (momentary) release date is in seven and a half weeks. ;-)

The monster/humanoid ratio is 14 to 11 atm, that´s pretty closely balanced.

I hope we see a few more monsters than PCs/NPCsin this set. ;-)

Whenever I read about this set, I can't help but hear "In the Court of the Crimson King" running through my head. I've been reading up on Queen Illeosa and the Gray Maidens. Having such a large troop of them will make for an excellent adventure, even if it's my homebrew and not Court of the Crimson Throne. And, my, I must say Queen Illeosa is one motivated woman.

So far, this set is great, and we haven't even gotten to the dungeon dressing pieces yet. I always look forward to those.

I disagree, there is a hint of expression on that face.

I'd call that pretty and distinguishable.

We'll see how close the final version is to the digital sculpt, I suppose. ^_^

+1 to charisma related checks when dealing with humanoids attracted to females.

What makes the Trinia render look ugly is mostly the hairdo in combination with the facial expression.

The hair will be almost the same on the finished mini, i really hope they change the expression a little, otherwise this mini will go up against "melty-face Feiya" for ugliest PFB mini.

Why is the render looking so strange, when every piece of art for Trinia looks much different?
And yes, the weapons look strange too.

Having now gone through several cycles from digital masters to paint masters to finished minis, I find that the biggest loss of detail in the process is with the fine detail diminishing between digital master and paint master—and that this particularly affects faces. I think that the artists are aware of that loss, and compensate for it by exaggerating details in the digital faces in much the same way that makeup artists tend to boldly emphasize the facial features of stage actors.

Thank you for the explaination, Vic.

That makes a lot of sense.
"Rusty Dragon Inn" and "Deadly Foes" had great human(oid) faces, so i'm very optimistic about that aspect in the PFB line.

These days i'm more concerned about breakage issues of miniatures using poles - every single Ankheg (5) i have from Deadly Foes has broken off it's pole and you have to be careful with rope tricks and Giant Eagles. ;-)
But so far, only the large Death mini in this set looks like it could have a pole problem.

Newsflash:

Starfinder miniatures have been officially announced!

Ninja Division - not Wizkids - will make them.

That probably means that at least a few, if not most of the "Irongods" creatures will be converted into miniatures!
I really like that Adventure Path and am excized about getting robots and orcs with chainsaws! ;-)

Given that Iron Gods and Starfinder have virtually nothing to do with each other, you probably shouldn't get your hopes up about seeing any specific things from Iron Gods in that minis line.

It's like saying "They're making Star Wars Miniatures! Finally, they'll make the Spelljammer minis I've been waiting for!"

You probably know better than me what the "Alien Archive" or Starfinder CRB will contain, but when i look at the Iron Gods covers, we should at least get androids, chainsaw wielders and Kasatha. ;-)

Now i don't know if some of the robot designs will be re-used or if we'll only get brand-new ones, but as the old ones havn't been reprinted in a Bestiary, the chance is there imo.
And ratfolk and some of the alien animals or Dominion of the Black creatures are a safe bet, i think.

Isn't Starfinder taking place in the same (if alternative future) universe as Pathfinder?

Of course, we won't get the exact NPCs from IG, but there are the same planets in PF & SF, unlike in SW & SJ, so there is some overlap possible. ;-)

It's complicated. We'll definitely get some things that will be generally useful - androids, kasatha, ratfolk, robots.

We probably won't get the SAME robots, nor will we get much with the "post-apocalyptic technology scavenger" theme that Iron Gods is built on. This also makes chainsaw-wielders unlikely - Starfinder characters can get actual weapons.

We almost definitely won't get any specific characters from Iron Gods, unless they're used generically (as with the Technic League Captain in the Battles line). And I expect those to be rare indeed, if they happen at all.

Also, note that the Androffan technology scavenged in Numeria isn't the same technology that the Pact Worlds of Starfinder design and manufacture, and the other planets of Golarion's system play very little role in Iron Gods. There's not all that much Dominion activity in Iron Gods, so I don't expect a lot there either.

The best chance for getting Iron Gods elements in the Starfinder line is if those elements become part of Starfinder. They're not going to make Starfinder minis of creatures that aren't part of Starfinder. And because of the massive time disparity between the two, only generic creatures have any real chance of that.

Final disclaimer: none of this is based on any information I do or don't have about upcoming products. Even if I did or do know, I would write this post as if I didn't, to avoid revealing secrets by implication. This post is entirely based on my understanding of how they generally do these things, and what has been made public thus far.

Yeah, i thought the "Androffan" robot designs unlikely to appear in the "Pact Worlds" too, but some are very cool and they could maybe turn up in a later product. ;-)

I was mostly being happy about the "android", "kasatha" & "ratfolk/ysoki" minis we will get (the sculpts look cool! :-)) and the fact that we will get some (different) robots to represent the ones in IG. ;-)

We'll probably never see a gargantuan "Annihilator" robot though...
