Your Faith is Rewarded!

Wednesday, March 16, 2016

Faith and religion are ubiquitous in Golarion, and some of the world's most fascinating divinities have also historically been its most mysterious. With the recent release of Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Faiths, though, we're drawing back the curtains shrouding 15 of the Inner Sea region's lesser-known deities. From Milani, the valiant Everbloom, to Brigh, the enigmatic Whisper in the Bronze, to Zyphus, the Grim Harvestman, this divine goody bag is filled with lore and tools for faithful characters. Now, let's reveal some of its secrets!

For those who want to play a devout character with the Deific Obedience feat, this book offers obediences and boons for all 15 featured deities. There are boons available to characters with levels in the evangelist, exalted, and sentinel prestige classes (Pathfinder Campaign Setting: Inner Sea Gods 198-203); characters without levels in those prestige classes can access the exalted boons.

Like other obediences we've published, the obediences in Inner Sea Faiths are tightly tied to their deities' portfolios, concerns, and roles in the campaign setting. For instance, take Kurgess's obedience, as written by freelancer Patrick Renie:

Find the nearest boulder, log, or other unattended object that you can reliably lift over your head, and hold it up high for the duration of the obedience. If you are interrupted at any time by any creature or person, you must challenge your interrupter to a contest of strength, speed, or stamina, with the boulder or other object of your obedience as the main focus of the competition. Regardless of who wins, gain a +2 sacred bonus on Acrobatics and Climb checks.

For those more interested in how these faiths fit into Golarion's society at large, the book provides in-depth information about each divinity's priests—how they tend to approach their roles, what their lifestyles look like, and how they might interact with passing adventurers.

Each divinity's section also includes artwork of a priest of that faith. For instance, below we have priests of Achaekek, the Mantis God, whose section's author is Creative Director James Jacobs; Gyronna, the Angry Hag, whose section's author is Developer Crystal Frasier; and Sivanah, the Seventh Veil, whose section's author is Project Manager Jessica Price.

And, last but not least, I'd be remiss if I didn't share this totally metal opening piece of artwork for Zyphus's section.

I'll leave you with a final hint: that section's remaining art? Just as metal, right down to the malevolent wraith standing beside the god himself.

I still love the outfit for the red mantis assassin that isn't a tokusatsu character.

Also, that Obedience...

No, Zyphus is the Dood who leaves a candy trail specifically to that trap on that mountain somewhere that he wants you to fall into for pretty much no reason.

You've been had, you should report this error to your local temple of Zyphus.

Reminds me of this season of Galavant when Madalena was totally willing to sacrifice the baby for Dark Dark Evil power, and the evil wizard initiating her was like, "What? No, I'm just baby-sitting for one of the servants! What's wrong with you?!"

Is that possibly a non-Red Mantis Assassin priest of Achaekek? Didn't it say somewhere that the cult hunted down anyone claiming to follow him who was outside the official organization?

Possible. Or it might be a RMA simply out of uniform.

"Tag! You're it!" the gnome cleric shouts (runs to the backside of the boulder).

First player to fail the stamina check gets tired and loses. :-D

Erm, whatcha going to do with that babby, Gyronna?

Silver Crusade

Awesome! So, to be clear, this'll give me the information I need to make Sentinels, Exalteds and Evangelists for those 15 gods?

Yes.

Silver Crusade

Can we get a list of which 15 gods they are? We've got 6 mentioned in this blog post. Who are the other 9?

Edit: Nevermind.

This is looking like a good one.

I already have PFS characters who worship Naderi and Besmara, so even if I don't use the crunch, more background material on Naderi will be nice.

And I've been looking at Kurgess and Milani for future PCs for a while. Also, there's so little about Alseta that I've seen, and I'm mildly curious about that one.

This is my kinda book. Paizo brings me nothing but joy these days.

Kinda makes me nervous...

I like the non-redmantis of Achaekek person!

My first pathfinder character (before PFS even) followed Kurgess. Can't wait to find more about him.

Gyronna girl reminds me of Tangled.

The piñata monster, coming to Bestiary 6, takes a -10 to stealth anywhere but in a bazaar or children's party. It's basically just there for 1st-level PCs to beat on. Features prominently in We Be Goblins 5 (working title), where it may result in a player death for the unwary Poog. [/DREAMS&LIES]

Also, Zyphus' favored weapon is the scythe, right? right!? I've needed a fun harvester god for a while now. :)

I have a feeling that the priest of Achaekek is actually a Red Mantis, and I, at least, hope she is.
The fact that the Red Mantis hunts all those outside of their organization who claim to follow him sheds some light on just how devoted they are; I love it!

I believe Zyphus' favored weapon is the *heavy pick*.

...because nothing else could be more metal than that which wrests metal from the earth?

Slightly off topic, but is there any book with this type of detail on the Tien deities? Not necessarily the obediences, but just giving more detail on the fluff than the single paragraph write-ups they got in Gods and Magic and the Dragon Empires Primer? If so, I missed it. I'd love to see a book like this dedicated to Shizuru, Tsukiyo, etc.

I haven't had a chance to read it myself, but you might have more luck in the Dragon Empires Gazetteer.

Kurgess truly is the patron deity of "Bro... do you even lift?"

Hmm, that picture of Gyronna's priestess looks odd to me. Though that's because I always envisaged the Angry Hag's clergy as looking like, well, angry hags. Sort of like those old ladies you find on the bus or at the mall, wandering around cursing everyone and everything they see, nonstop.
