Iconic Heroes Set 5—THE REAL DEAL

Friday, January 29, 2016

Howdy, minis hounds! Last week, while I was trapped in the dreaded Paizo Conference Room (CR 23), the able Chris Lambertz took the wheel to show off digital renders of WizKids' incredible Iconic Heroes Set 5 for the Pathfinder Battles line of prepainted plastic miniatures.

I'm happy to report that the actual figures have arrived at Paizo and out in the wild, so this week we move from digital renders to actual photographs of the figures in the set. Would you like to take a peek? Of course you would!

Here we have Kess, Human Brawler. Kess is perfect for any unarmed female PC (though she'd honestly double as a male fairly convincingly), and even works as an NPC thug leader. I love her fist-forward pose, and the color detail on the face of the figure I have on my desk is very well done.

Next up is Oloch, Half-Orc Warpriest. Oloch is probably my favorite figure in this bunch, and one of my favorite miniatures in the entire Iconic Heroes range. He is a sentimental favorite, as I've been having a blast writing him in Dynamite's ongoing Pathfinder: Hollow Mountain comic series, but boy, what an intimidating, awesome figure. The banners on Oloch's back feature amazing detail. I really love this guy.

Zadim, Human Slayer is another sentimental favorite, since I wrote his "Meet the Iconics" backstory. This figure's pose is really interesting, depicting Zadim mid-strike with one of his deadly kukris. WizKids has done a phenomenal job properly painting the various layers of his voluminous robes.

Enora, Halfling Arcanist is another highly versatile figure, either as a spellcasting player character or as an NPC. We haven't done too many halflings in Pathfinder Battles so far, so she fills a very useful niche. Her eyes, at least on the version I have in hand, are among the best I've yet seen on a WizKids figure.

Is this set specifically designed to strum my heartstrings with sentimental favorites? Adowyn, Human Hunter is based on a character from my weekly Pathfinder campaign, run by my neighbor and Pathfinder's Lead Designer Jason Bulmahn. It's fun to see a character I've known for so long come to life, first as an amazing illustration by Wayne Reynolds and second as a sweet miniature from WizKids. You can really use Adowyn for any kind of archer character, but her flowing cape and overall aura of awesomeness almost demand that she be a player character. An amazing figure, overall!

Last up in Iconic Heroes Set 5 is Leryn, Adowyn's animal companion wolf. In the campaign, her animal companion is a gibbon, but perhaps Pathfinder Battles is not quite ready for that level of awesomeness. A wolf is, nonetheless, a highly versatile, useful miniature. With a run on its head and a mean black stripe running down its back, Leryn makes an even more imposing foe than friend. Team Leryn up with a pack of wolves from our first set, Heroes & Monsters, and watch your players run for the hills!

Iconic Heroes Set 5 is currently shipping from paizo.com, and is on shelves at your local game store. With premium paint jobs, unique Pathfinder Adventure Card Game cards, and some of the best sculpts yet in this range, this is one you won't want to miss!

I'm still hoping to get some new sculpts for our next big set so I can start off a new round of brand new reveals. It's coming very, very soon now...

Until then, I remain,

"Paizo Conference Room?" I think you mean Valhalla. You meet, you die, you meet again.

Hayato?

You need to imagine that in a pitiful tone. Oh and these look phenomenal. The real question - is the conference room a mythic foe? Perhaps a nascent demon lord?

I like them, but Zadims eyes kinda freak me out.

Look better than last set, which wasn't up to normal quality.

Honestly, I like the wolf, but we already have a wolf. I'd much prefer a gibbon :(

I got Set 5 today. All of the paint jobs were superb! Zadim is my favorite of the set; excellent sculpt, wonderful detail, and his face is perfectly painted. I suddenly feel the need for more middle-eastern themed characters! Enora is my next favorite; her robe and cloak have wonderful designs applied to them. Kes is exceptionally well sculpted and painted. She'll see use as a monk at some point in my campaign. Adowyn was my most anticipated figure from the set but I'm disappointed in the end result. The sculpt's proportions seem off to me; legs too long, waist too narrow, and her fur boots too bulky. But the face is amazingly wel painted. Oloch is a nice figure; he'll fit in well with my orcs. Lastly, we Leryn. I want to like the wolf, but there is something about the way it's head is sculpted that doesn't seem right; it's like it's head is too flattened. In all, a good set with a few minor problems.

Gibbon?

Well, in hand these are great. Detail is excellent, both in sculpt and paint job. If you felt it may have been missing in set 4 then this set will bring you back into the fold. I've read reviews that lord Oloch but I can comfortably say I'm just as impressed by Zadim and Kess. Oh, and at least in the one I have, the faces are very well done, very clear detail and parts are all in the right place - lips, eyes etc.

I have to agree with some previous posts. I already have a plethora of wolf miniatures and don't need another. The gibbon definitely should have been used instead.

Adowyn, huh? Sounds like paying homage to Eowyn of LotR...which is just fine with me!

Has there been an unofficial, or rumour of what is coming next for Pathfinder Battles? If not I'd take some educated guesses, wild-arsed speculation, or fanfic hopes. I know Erik has offered that we might be getting more info soon, but I'm mini-news-hungry this AM.

I too hope we get a glimpse of the next set tonight.
Even it is only the title. ;-)

Huges, huges, huges! <fingers crossed>.

You got to wonder when the Ostog mini will make it into a set, lol

He already exists in unpainted metal and Minimate forms...

While i love the Reaper Miniatures unpainted metal minis and use lots of them in my games (unpainted cause they look really cool), i wish Paizo/Wizkids would make pre-painted plastic versions of them (some exist already like King Irovetti or the Serpentfolk Degenerate).

Red Mantis Assassin is one that comes up a lot.

Thx

Damn, it looks like we won't get a preview this week. :-(

I'm kind of amazed we haven't had a Red Mantis Assassin in the Battles line yet. I can't imagine Erik would allow that to remain the case all that much longer.

Is that a hint?

Thx Vic. ;-)

I'd like to see an Iconic Villains range - same boxed set style of 5-6 minis at the same price point and paint quality - but focussed on NPCs and key villains.

I'd like to suggest some:

-Runelords
-Red Mantis Assassins
-Hell's Vengeance PCs
-Second Darkness cover Drow
-Mix with: Whispering Tyrant, Razmir, Nyrissa, Jade Regent, Sky Pharaoh...

Dark Archive

I also want a male and female kitsune in the next set.

There are 4 full-body images i know of (Bestiary 3, Jade Regent #4, Dragon Empire Gazetteer and Dragon Empire Primer i think).
2 are good, 2 not so much.

Lots of people play them and they are not present in ppm so far.

Also they would fit in with a more nature themed set (which is overdue).
Like the Basidirond. ;-)

Silver Crusade Contributor

There's a kitsune in the ARG as well, although it would be tough to make a good mini out of.

Maybe next friday (12th) we could get a preview of the computer renders of all 7 minis from "Iconic Heroes Set 6"?
So far we have seen only 5 of them - the Samurai and Investigator have not been shown.

The week after that (19th) we could get pics of the actual minis, as the street date in Canada is the 17th and in the USA the 24th.

Thx

Looking forward to hearing about both the next Iconic Heroes set and the next featured case set.

How many Iconic Heroes sets are in the works? Is #6 the last or will there be more?

So far only 6 sets have been planned.

But Paizo already said if they sell good enough there will be more.
I bought 1-3 and will take a look at set 4 on the 12th (european release date).
I will definetly buy Set 5.
Set 6 interests me very much but i have to wait for actual pictures.

Thank you. I hope they continue making more - these are fun NPCs or cool choices for PCs.

Occult Adventures + all prestige classes is enough "Iconics" for four more sets.

There are 89 prestige classes - so 3 sets beyond the Occult Iconics would not be nearly enough.

That said it is unlikely that we will see most, if not all of them in PPM.

The Occult Heroes would be the next obvious set (#7).

After that only the Vigilante (from march's Ultimate Intrigue) remains.

So far it doesn't look that Horror Adventures introduces new Character Classes.

Some people suggested "Iconic Villains" which i am all for.

The iconics from "Hell's Vengeance", the Runelords, the Bosses from APs like Second Darkness, Council of Thieves, Kingmaker, Carrion Crown, Jade Regent, Mummy's Mask and Hell's Rebels, the Red Mantis Assassins and many more would be great minis.

where did you get 89 prestige classes from?

I only counted the ones in the PRD:
- Core Rule Book (10)
- Advanced Player Guide (8)

plus 6 "Occult" Classes makes four sets of 6

Dark Archive

I have looked on the pathfinder D20 page (www.pfsrd.com). Most are from Pathfinder Campaign Setting "Paths of Prestige".

Dark Archive

There are some in the "Inner Sea World Guide" too: Harrower, Hellknight, Low Templar, Red Mantis Assassin.

There's also a few from other sources. I suspect that the justiciar (from Seven Days to the Grave) would be popular, if rather similar to the City Watch Sniper.

We didn't say that. We're not in any position to say that, because that's WizKids' decision to make, not ours.

We *have* said that we really want to see more, and we have made sure WizKids knows that.

Just sayin': Occult Adventures has 6 awesome iconics. Throw a bonus phantom figure in there in clear green plastic and it's a hit!

SET 6 LOOKS AWESOME!

Here are pics of the actual minis:

http://wizkids.com/blog/2016/02/09/coming-this-month-from-wizkids-pathfinde r-battles-iconic-heroes-set-6/

I can't wait for the european release in april!

Here are better pictures of each seperate mini from set 6:

http://wizkids.com/pathfinder-battles-iconic-heroes-set-6/?mc_cid=984cd6df2 5&mc_eid=37cc15a35c

Unfortunately the price went up to $39.99.

But $5.72 per mini is still ok for the quality.
Considering it has 7 minis instead of 6 it is even a little cheaper per mini than sets 4 & 5.

Still, a long way from the "Beginner Box Heroes" for $12.99 (for 4 minis/$3.25 each).

I have bought sets 1, 2, 3 and will buy 5 & 6.
Only set 4 is uncertain as i don't like most classes and have so far seen only mediocre pictures.

Dark Archive

Set 4 and 5 are out in europe!
