ToyFair (Part 1)

Friday, February 20, 2015

Last weekend I was in New York City for ToyFair, the annual trade show for the toy business that sees hundreds of manufacturers and thousands of buyers (but no kids!) gather for four days of meetings, buying sprees, and other assorted activities. Paizo had a nice display of our gaming stuff at the Diamond booth, as Diamond distributes our books and games into bookstores and comic shops. Diamond's sister company, Diamond Select Toys, makes a number of Pathfinder toys, including Pathfinder Minimates and an incredibly cool vinyl goblin bank, which comes out late next month.

Diamond's toy division didn't have any Pathfinder goodies on display this year, but I was able to meet with their team to discuss additional projects in 2015 and 2016 that I'm certain Pathfinder fans will love. I'm very excited by what the future has in store!

Here's a look at the Pathfinder section of the overall Diamond booth.

But even if the Diamond booth didn't have a lot of plastic Pathfinder items on display, that absence was more than made up for by our partners at WizKids, who showed off a huge number of new Pathfinder Battles prepainted plastic figures. I managed to snap several photos of their display, but doing so was somewhat difficult because of the huge crowd ogling them throughout the convention. I had a chance to chat with a few hobby retailers who carried the line while I obsessively snapped my photos, which was definitely fun! ToyFair brings in all kinds of retailers, and it's always great to chat with store owners and managers who appreciate and support hobby gaming!

The largest Pathfinder Battles display at the WizKids booth was Dungeons Deep, the set we plan to release in June.

In this shot we see a Pukwudgie and an Andrazku Demon (both of which were originally going to be in the Reign of Winter set), with a Clockwork Golem in the middle and a Dire Bat in the background.

Here we have the second half of WizKids's display, with a bunch of figures including the Gnoll Slaver, Daughter of Urgathoa, and Sasquatch, some of which we've revealed already on the blog.

This shot reveals a Giant Centipede, Baykok, and Chupacabra in the foreground, with a Griffon, Daughter of Urgathoa, and some other stuff in the background.

Here we have a Dracolisk. I noticed that a lot of photos other ToyFair attendees had taken tended to have this figure in the background (sometimes not even standing up!), so I wanted to make sure to get a good shot of it for you guys.

That said, it was about this time that I started to get really, really frustrated with the quality of photos from my iPhone 4, so I switched over to a much better camera on the phone of one of my colleagues. That phone allowed me to take SUPER-HIGH-RES photos of Iconic Heroes Sets 2 and 3, which were the centerpiece of WizKids's ToyFair display.

Unfortunately, we couldn't figure out a way to get those photos onto my computer before my associate had to leave town, so I'm going to have to bring them to you next Friday.

Believe me, they're worth the wait!

These minis look great!

Thank you for the info which ones were from Reign of Winter, i find that very interesting. Maybe you could tell us if there are more minis that were cut but are upcoming and which ones?

I see two small errors:

1. The normal Wood Golem is medium sized.
So this seems to be an advanced model that can also be used as a Clockwork Golem. ;-)

2. A normal Dracolisk is large size.
The miniature looks pretty big but the base is small.
Maybe this is just a wrong base or it is a young creature template...

The Veiled Master Aboleth looks specially cool!

Thx Eric.

1. The wood golem looks to be a clockwork golem (the pawn version).

2. A normal dracolisk as in the bestiary is medium sized. Only the Tome of Horrors dracolisk is large sized.

Love these minis, and it's generous of you to share so many in one go!

Erik, did you see other cool toys that you really liked at the fair? Any big new additions to your no doubt epic collection?

Looking great. That is most assuredly a clockwork golem. So far This is looking to be a great set. More fey is always welcome, and the puckwugie and nuglub look great. I like the fact that the golem can pass for both types and the creepy little blood vessel waggling out the top of the creeping claw is awesome. Sadly I imagine the veiled master is. A rare? Very nice indeed. The centipede looks to be a masterpiece of sculpting, the legs and antennae really stand out in the pic. Is that a bat familiar in the first photo? Perhaps an ochre jelly and a giant tick in the second?
The only week points for me- the griffon looks like it has duck feet, now I imagine it the photo but at the moment, hmmmmmm
And I really hope the dracolich isn't as unstable as it looks, very top heavy looking and given the photos that show it toppled over I can't help but think it may be one of those frustrating minis that always falls over on the table.
Over all this looks to be an awesome set, come on June.

Now i know why i made the mistake.

This is actually the Half-Dragon from the Bestiary aka Half-black dragon basilisk aka dracolisk.

Cool - another missing entry from Bestiary (1).

I actually write inside my bestiaries when a pathfinder or d&d miniature has been made of a monster and which number and series it is from and then mark it green when i got it.

It would be cool if a little photo of the miniature would be included in the monster entry (maybe i´ll do that) and if you like it and need it you know where to find it and can order it per QR-code directly from paizo or wizkids.
But that is the future i´m talking about - note to self: stop doing that. ;-)

Kidding aside there are not many creatures still missing from the first Bestiary who need to be made into miniatures.

Mostly it´s HUGE or GARGANTUAN sizes now.

I can see a HUGE miniatures line coming up in the future.

But there needs to be a Gargantuan and colossal pawn collection.

I just had the idea how to make them:

Create 6 card or plastic pieces that fit together to form a die (or create an actual die) and just use stickers on each side with a picture from the monsters front, back, sides and top.
Put a Pathfinder logo underneath and sell them for $5 (GARGANTUAN) or $10 (COLOSSAL)!

I know i would buy them.

Sorry if i got off topic a little - i want all pathfinder creatures presented in 3 dimensions on my flip-mats. ;-)

Sorry, sorry. It's a Clockwork Golem. Dracolisk is correctly sized at Medium.

Yes, lots and lots of awesome toys. I'll post a comment on one line in particular I loved when I get out of this cab and back to my computer.

Webstore Gninja Minion

Fixed the golem error, as well as pukwudgie typo.

Folks,

Other than the Pathfidner stuff, of course, this was my favorite booth at ToyFair:

Mythic Legions

Simply stunning fantasy action figures. 30 points of articulation. Absolutely gorgeous.

Wow! Okay, those are cool. Is that the same Four Horsemen that's supplying one of our Superstar judges for the next round, or a different Four Horsemen?

Here looks to be a surprising lack of detailling on the goblin. Single tone to skin, black mouth ( teeth not picked out like on previous). I hope it matches the standard we've been getting, would hate the only archer to be the badly detailed figure. Odd, hopefully it's just a bad pic.

Took a look at the pic, the teeth seem to be picked out in white.

I see that Bone Golem peeking out, and it excites me. (Last pic)

Rats. I just started a Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign - there's no way that Daughter of Urgathoa is going to get to me in time. :(

2nd pic here? Blobby feet, paint bleed onto the bow, black mouth. Not talking about the previously shown pics which was a render. Is thee another pic of the actual model somewhere? I've only seen the one here in the second picture above.

I'm not too fussed, rest of the set looks fantastic

There is another close up from Toy Fair, I'll post the link if I can find it. And yes the bow and the feet are still pretty bad, but the teeth have been picked out, just not as nicely as in the digital render. They look single coat dry-brushed in the close up. I'm with you in hoping that the Archer holds up to at least the detail level of the other goblins produced so far.

OMG that Aboleth looks amazing! Seeing that, alone, just got me a bunch of my local players to agree to "go in" on another full case this time around! Can't wait to see more!

Bestiary says Aboleths are huge.

http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/monsters/aboleth.html#aboleth

also the art doesn't quite fit

It's a veiled master not an aboleth. Veiled masters are more magic and trickery focused and thus only large.

sounds better, I might have use for one of them.

Sounds great. Do you happen to remember what the source material is for these creatures?
