ToyFair Eve

Friday, February 13, 2015

I just landed in New York City in advance of ToyFair, the annual toy business trade show that launches tomorrow. While Paizo does not have a booth at the show (yet!), it's become an invaluable stop for me to catch up with some of our licensing partners, including the fine folks at WizKids, who manufacture the Pathfinder Battles line. I've got it on good authority that WizKids will have an entire production-run set of Dungeons Deep on hand for their display, and I hope to snap a few key photos to show off what some of the figures look like in hand. Next week's blog will, I hope, feature some images of upcoming Pathfinder Battles figures, and perhaps some additional surprises as well!

But the thing I'm really excited about at the moment is Pathfinder Battles: Iconic Heroes Set #1, which arrived in the Paizo warehouse yesterday, and will hit stores and subscribers very shortly.

When WizKids told us they were aiming for a super-premium production on the Iconic Heroes line, I was very excited to see how that commitment would translate to the final figure. It's relatively easy for a professional painter to produce a killer paint master, for example, but it's another thing entirely for everything to go right at the factory in a way that really raises the bar. Frankly, I think WizKids has been raising the bar set after set with Pathfinder Battles, so while I was excited to see what they could do with Iconic Heroes, I confess my enthusiasm was tinged with at least a little bit of skepticism. I mean, how much better could they be, really?

Well, I'm holding them in my hands right now, and I can tell you the answer is "much better." I don't think I've seen such polished prepainted plastic figures from any manufacturer since the birth of prepainted minis. WizKids has really set a new bar for figures that I honestly don't see how they (or anyone else) will exceed. The figures look fantastic. They have blazed by the threshold of "probably better than I could do myself" to "way, way, way better than I could do myself." I am very excited to see what you think of them.

I do apologize that this shot is a little bit on the blurry side (all the others I took are completely unusable). I'm not dealing with optimal lighting conditions in my hotel room, and my phone is within 72 hours of being death-marched to the Manhattan Apple store, where it will be replaced by an upgraded and superior model.

"Upgraded and superior models." That's a good tagline for Iconic Heroes Set #1!

But enough about Iconic Heroes (for now), let's move on to our next big set, Dungeons Deep, which releases in a few months.

First up this week, is the Goblin Archer. I was astonished to discover, upon adding this guy to the set, that Paizo did not actually own a full-body image of a goblin archer appropriate for use as miniatures reference, so we commissioned an original illustration for the sole purpose of the minis line—the first time this has happened to date (though not the last!). The Goblin Archer is a Small, common figure.

We've already revealed a couple of gnolls in Dungeons Deep, so I thought it might be fun to keep fleshing out their ranks. Here we have the Gnoll Slaver, fresh out of the pages of the Monster Codex. The image above is a digital sculpt, but I've seen the paint master for this villain, and it looks incredible. I can hardly believe it's a COMMON. It's also Medium.

That's it for this week's preview. Tune in next Friday for what I hope will be some shots of Pathfinder Battles goodies from the WizKids booth, ideally taken with a new camera phone!

I'm really glad to see plenty of gnolls in this set.

Liberty's Edge

I've always thought gnolls were underused in Pathfinder. Glad to see they're not entirely forgotten.

The iconic heroes look decent. Sajan is who I'm most excited for, as his original sculpt had off proportions (teeny little arms).
Even looking at the paint masters I can see Seoni is likely to be the weak link, the details in her face lost under a glob of paint and the mere memory of a mouth present. But could just be the light. We'll see...

I like the Goblin and Gnoll Slaver both. I could see the Gnoll Slaver being tweaked with weapon swaps as well. Give a pack of them some variations. This set is looking so good.

We needed a Pathfinder Goblin Archer. This will truly fill out the ranks in my growing Pathfinder Goblin Army.

And to chime in agreement, glad to see the Gnolls coming out in force. I look forward to the production images, an of course to have them in hand.

The Iconic Heroes Set #1 is rather timely. I use Valeros as my Longsword and Gladius wielding Pirate in a Skull & Shackles campaign. And a player is looking to use Valeros as their miniatures in my third Rise of the Runelord campaign. At present I only have one. So getting another sculpt is great. Now each of us can have their own version. (I usually provide all the miniatures, and let the players keep the one that represents their PC.)

These are so good. I simply can't wait for Dungeon's Deep! And I agree about the Gnoll being a great addition!

Is there any way you would consider editing your post or hiding it behind a spoiler tag? I personally have no problem with learning about the upcoming minis, but some might prefer the suspense.

Links are great because they provide one the opportunity to make up his or her own mind. I agree that discussion about it will be fun, but perhaps we can create a new thread?

Some pretty awesome stuff in that picture, no matter how you slice it! I'm especially excited about the not-aboleth, and the ticks and centipedes are also very welcome. Pleased that we've got a Daughter of Urgothoa coming too!

I´m sorry Pigraven, you´re probably right - but i don´t know how to create a spoiler button. :o

Also i don´t know how to create a new thread but if you do i´ll visit there and we can discuss about the shown minis.

I agree that there are probably some people who want to surprise themselves every week.

But after seeing only computer sculpts for weeks i was pretty excited to see a somewhat blurry photo of 20 actual minis and didn´t think further.

There are actually close-up photos of the Bone Golem and Veiled Master which i didn´t want to show so that Eric can do that.
And i want to see close-up pics of all the shown figures too so i can see if the sculpt is something i´m interested in.

Please people let me know if you´re offended by my revelatory guesses of minis then i will stop doing that.

I hope there is not too much damage done. :-(

Edit your post with this one....

Show of hands. Who would NOT in all honestly look at the spoilers?

I for one want to see what is coming out as soon as I can. It helps me plan future adventures.

if all the new iconics look as good as the pic suggests I might just try and finance them by flogging the first run to collectors.

So far 31 of the 51 (53 if you count the replacement minis) from Dungeons Deep have been revealed at www.pathfinderminis.com

Excellent work Kor! :-)

And the range of creatures is great too - a good mix of missing basic, exotic and Golarion-specific minis.

Nicely choosen Eric!

They look huge because they are in the foreground.

I want HUGE minis too but sadly there are no news about that yet.

The "Reign of Winter Monster Encounter Pack" is a good example for a bad choice of huge minis.

If this product would have sold better we would probably already have more packs like that...

Why was that a bad choice for huge minis? where they bad minis or just a bad choice of what minis to make?

They were both well made unfortunately the Svathurim was a very niche mini most people weren't terribly interested in.

Dark Archive

The minis were good - but if it would have been a huge fire elemental and a huge water elemental (for example) it would probably have sold so well that wizkids would be eager to make more.

The way it is now we will probably have to wait a while longer for the next huge minis.

I´m pretty sure they will be made at one point because the market is there but it will take some time.

Yeah if they did four huge elementals like the larges im sure they would sell quick

This comes up every time Huge miniatures are talked about. I definitely think elementals would be the best starting point for more Huge pieces, and I feel like pretty much everyone here is in agreement. Erik himself has even stated he'd love to get the Huge elementals released.

It all comes down to Wizkids, and how willing they would be to bite on the idea.
