Editing Pathfinder: Origins

Thursday, February 5, 2015

I must admit I'm not an RPG player. I didn't grow up playing D&D, and never picked it up along the way.

However, that hasn't stopped me from enjoying editing the Pathfinder comics at Dynamite. Getting to know the characters and settings of Paizo's rich Pathfinder world has been a treat. I've watched the iconic characters of the game come to life, and gotten to know how they talk and behave: Seoni the sorcerer, Valeros the fighter, Kyra the cleric, Harsk the dwarf ranger, Ezren the wizard, and Merisiel the elf rogue. The world of Pathfinder works well with the strengths of comics as a medium. There's no story too big to tell when working in comics, and the stories so far have been pretty grand, thanks to Jim Zub.

In Dark Waters Rising, the companions investigated a strange magic that gripped the goblin tribes of Varisia, changing and unifying them. At the heart of the strange evolution was an ancient evil force that nearly killed the adventurers before they found a way to overcome it.

In Of Tooth and Claw, the group went on a hunt for the creature terrorizing the locals of Sandpoint (Black Fang the dragon), and in the process found more than they bargained for. A seemingly simple monster hunt became a twisted tale of danger and betrayal as the Cult of Lamashtu exacted its revenge.

In City of Secrets, our heroes headed to the city of Magnimar. As Ezren sought an audience with the Pathfinder Society, his adventuring allies explored the city's ancient magic, well-hidden secrets, and deep political divides. The dangers and opportunities of the big city were almost too much for the group to endure...

And that brings us to our newest series, Pathfinder: Origins, which delves deeper into the histories of the Pathfinder iconic characters, and introduces new characters to the comics. Get ready to see Amiri the barbarian, Seelah the paladin, Lini the gnome druid, Seltiyel the half-elf magus, Sajan the monk, and Lem the halfling bard come to four-color life, as they each interact with the core iconics in brand new adventures.

Another cool aspect of Pathfinder: Origins is that it's written by key Paizo staff: Erik Mona, F. Wesley Schneider, and James L. Sutter have all helped create the constantly expanding world of the Pathfinder RPG. And they have done a fantastic job here of not only telling great individual stories, but working to interweave them in this series. The result is something fresh, new, and fun. Take a look at the sample pages below by Erik Mona and artist Tom Garcia for just a hint of the exciting action in store.

Pathfinder: Origins ships monthly February through July from Dynamite, and is available right here on Paizo.com. Each issue will contain a new playable map/poster, as with prior issues. We can't wait to hear what you think of it. And come back later to find out what we have planned after Origins!

Well that was needlessly graphic.

Au contraire. I think we should be remembered how cruel, terrible, gory and gruesome dungeoning can be. Throwing dice is too "clean" for the fiction we create. :)

Well, at least there are no bare female breasts there, so we're good.

Critical Hit! That's about how we describe them in our game, too.

I'm eagerly anticipating these. Looks like they are renumbering the issues from number 1 again.

Question: Are we going to see City of Secrets in Hardcover Compilation?

Grand Lodge

Jim Zub isn't involved with this series ("Origins"), right?

Will he be returning for later series? I have enjoyed all the stories so far. It gives these characters and adventures a bit more depth. Especially when playing the RPG Iconics and also the Pathfinder Adv Card Game.

Jim is busy with work for Image and Marvel at the moment, but we hope to see him back in the series again. Origins is written by me, James L. Sutter, and F. Wesley Schneider, so there's a very Paizonian take on it. We hope that the character elements will remain strong, and we're sure that players will appreciate the in-world references that come with having co-creators of the campaign setting (and of the iconics) writing their stories.

The City of Secrets hardcover compilation is in the works.

The way the comic business works these days, series get restarted more and more frequently as sales drop off after the first issue almost like clockwork (this is true for Marvel and DC as well as for smaller companies like Dynamite--it's a pretty widespread phenomenon these days).

That said, it's still the same story, featuring the same characters (plus some new ones this time out). The first scene of Origins picks up shortly after the end of City of Secrets, and follows the same continuity.

I know I speak for James and Wes when I say we really hope you like it!

Erik does indeed speak for me. I am SO EXCITED about this series! The whole process has been a ton of fun, and I can't wait to see what you all think!

-I am glad to hear that the compiliation is in the works. It makes re-reading the story SO MUCH easier.

-I have heard that restarting the numbering on a series is a thing now. It just means that I need to keep track of when they came out. No big deal.

-Origins is continuing from the end of City of Secrets? I thought it was the beginnings of the characters. Are they all sitting in the tavern telling their stories?

-I'm confident that I will like the series.

There is a framing device/story that takes place in the present, during which the six main characters recount stories of their past adventures. Those adventures form the significant majority of each issue, but the framing story does advance the overall storyline of the iconic characters, and picks up directly from the end of City of Secrets.

You'll soon see! :)

Rather interesting to see that Lini is one of the characters (Since impression I got was her appearence in Issue 4 (Least I think it was 4) Was the first time any of the group had met her. (Side note would be really nice to make her a more permanent character somehow)

Dark Archive

Soooo uh after seeing whats happend in the first issue I'm somewhat less sure I want to see what happens to any more of the Iconics now

Spoiler:
Really hope there are plans to resolve the entire Amiri is possesed thing very quickly. Also really hope none of the others have it go as badly as that. (For some reason I'm finding the entire treatment of Amiri in that one mildly uncomfortable)
