You Guys, You Guys!!!

Friday, January 23, 2015

I just got out of the final paint master approval meeting for June's Dungeons Deep set of Pathfinder Battles prepainted plastic miniatures, and my jaw still hasn't come up from the floor.

We reviewed 28 figures today, including the breathtaking Gargantuan Red Dragon limited-edition "case incentive" figure, and I'm prepared to make the prediction that this will be our best set yet.

I've already extolled the virtues of WizKids's digital sculpting process for releases like Iconic Heroes Set #1, but this is the first time we've been able to implement the process within the context of a large set. All I can say, after handling and reviewing all those figures today, is that the difference is palpable and significant. Not only has the process allowed us tighter control during the sculpt approval phase, but it's also resulted in generally better-looking, more detailed figures across the board. I am SO EXCITED for this set I can't even handle it. I wanted to steal the paint masters and use them in my own games immediately, but somehow made my saving throw against abject greed.

Wow, wow, wow.

Let's start with the Frost Giant.

To be totally honest, this is the figure I was most worried about in this set. Conceptually, I love her. It's long been a personal goal to produce a male and female of every major giant race in the Pathfinder RPG, so the figure definitely hits the mark there. The original illustration—and even to some extent the digital sculpt shown of above—always struck me as a little top-heavy. I was, I must say, a little worried. Having just held the final miniature in my hand, I can say that all of my concerns evaporated. Some of the other members of our approval team (I won't name names, but it rhymes with Meesa Shmeevins) audibly gasped as the figure hit the table. So, so awesome. The Frost Giant is a Large, uncommon figure.

A few weeks back, I mentioned that Dungeons Deep contains a creature type that we have not yet done in previous Pathfinder Battles sets. I should have said "sub-type," really, but at last I can officially reveal that that creature type is GNOLLS. Here we have the first in the set, the Gnoll Warrior. I'm very, very happy with how this guy turned out. I'm also happy that he will have several gnoll brothers and sisters elsewhere in the set. The Gnoll Warrior is a Medium, common figure.

And because I am as giddy as a schoolgirl, I've decided to go ahead and reveal my absolute favorite piece of dungeon dressing that will be included in the set: the Sarcophagus. Oh. My. God, this thing is amazing. For starters, we're looking at a three-piece figure, here. Sarcophagus, lid, and an actual MUMMY that easily comes in and out of the tomb. Best of all, the mummy has entirely flat feet, so you can easily use him as a genuine figure. Bonus! There are six pieces of dungeon dressing in the set. They'll be randomly inserted into eight boosters in every case (so case subscribers can be sure to get a full set). Trust me, you do not want to miss this figure. It is one of the most amazing miniatures we've produced so far!

And lastly, before I leave you for this week, I'd like to make one more push for our Ongoing Case Subscription service. We'll deliver a factory-sealed case direct to you at a substantial discount over the full retail price. The sub also comes with other benefits like an across-the-board discount on singles and other Pathfinder Battles releases (like our forthcoming Iconic Heroes sets). We've seen a nice, steady increase in subscribers since the last set, but I'm hoping we can increase those numbers significantly. Retailers are getting increasingly choosy with the large number of prepainted fantasty miniatures on the market at the moment, and a healthy number of subscribers is the best way to ensure the line's future by providing a core group of customers who we can count on to support each release. If you appreciate what we're doing with Pathfinder Battles and want to help us continue well into the future, please consider setting up an Ongoing Case Subscription today. It really is the best thing you can do to keep the Pathfinder Battles miniatures goodness coming!

I'm on vacation (in Maui!) next Friday. I MAY pre-load a preview blog for next week if I can carve out the time early next week. Otherwise, I'll see you guys in February!

The gnoll looks great, can't wait to see many more of his kind.
Love the sarcophagus! Mummy included was the icing on the cake. Dungeon Dressing is going to be a huge hit.
I'm cautiously optimistic about the frost giant. I hope the end result is just a shade paler blue. She looks better now than the first glimpse I got of her. The braids are awesome.

So if gnolls are the subtype does that mean no kytons? I was rather looking forward to them.

Several gnolls? How many are we talking about here? Four?

So. Much. Win!

Love all 3, but especially the giant and the sarcophagus. I really, really like how butch the frost giant is, and all the details on her armor. Honestly, it looks like a figure I'd like to get unpainted and do up myself.

And the sarcophagus! I really, really hope the paint job on the lid is up to the task. That will be a must have for anyone doing an Egyptian-themed adventure, and it's a nice touch to give us a mummy whose face is unwrapped!

Really strong picks. Enjoy Maui!

I'm happier that it is gnolls right now. That sculpt is marvelous.

I noticed the latest AP is giants. Does this mean we can expect to see more in this and the upcoming sets? Just because this and possibly the next few sets aren't AP based doesn't mean Paizo won't be producing minis that support these adventures, right?

I can confirm that there are no kytons in this set, alas.

I was particularly impressed with this detail on the paint master. I think it's going to be a huge winner!

I would not expect a lot of giants in the next two sets.

Hey Erik,

Excited about this set, and looking forward to actual pics of figures and not renders.

Any word on the evolution sets?

Sad for the lack of Kytons, very happy for the extra gnoll goodness. This first looks great (as a digital anyway) and the spoilered priestess looks excellent. The "brothers and sisters" has me excited, purely for the plural, I'm hoping we get at least 2 of each sex. Man will that give some great variety on the tabletop. My only concern is the spear. I really dislike floppy weapon syndrome and spears tend to be a major offender in almost every instance, I wonder if this spear is thick enough and rigid enough to avoid the inevitable bend, Gnolls just don't use bendy spears!

Good to see the giant repertoire expanding. Not a lot in the next two sets still leaves the gate open for a few doesn't it? Perhaps a shadow giant, or a female hill or fire? Although based on the artwork revealed yesterday I would absolutely love to see a mini of that marsh giant from he blog, that would look truly awesome.

Dungeon dressing is continuing to look like a big plus. No size indication for this one but I assume medium looking at the mummy. I assume this is not the mini referred to in last weeks blog as being capable of holding a medium mini inside? I can see myself needing far more than the one, possible two, in a case. Oh well maybe I'll just have to order me more cases.

Much like Curmudgeonly above I would prefer to see actual minis than renders, but at least this way I at least get to see what's in the set. Plus I suppose you get a two for one really. Render first to build the excitement, then a later spoiler of the actual mini to cement it.

Remove all thoughts of work form your head and enjoy your Maui holiday, well except perhaps the next spoiler blog, please, pretty please. Hm I think I may be addicted...

No, but I have an in-person meeting with WizKids execs at ToyFair next month, and it's on the agenda.

These all look great!

However, I confess to being a bit disappointed that the mystery sub-type was gnolls. I'm sure these will be an improvement on the ones from the past, and they definitely fill a niche for newcomers. I just hope we will see future representation for many of the creature types which were speculated on (qlippoths, daemons, oni, kytons, ...)

And although we've already seen the sasquatch and chupacabra, I'm greedy and hope to see more of the creatures which set Pathfinder apart from other games.

oooh qlippoth. Now that would be good. I think there is a daemon in this set, I have a vague recollection of Erik mentioning it in an earlier blog.

SO, I was right on one of my guesses on the sarcophagus! Now if we could still get the coffin and the cage, that would be SWEET! :)

The dungeon dressing pieces alone are making this set an absolute must-have!

I had remarked about the previous Frost Giant, from the Heroes & Monsters set, that I thought he was frail looking for a giant. While I liked his sculpt, he just appeared too lean to me for a creature that was supposed to represent and kick-butt in the cold. Allow me to say that this Frost Giant remedies that, and then some. It's a total home run, in my opinion.

As for the Gnolls, I consider the decision to include more than one type (and both sexes) in this set another home run. I love the look of Pathfinder Gnolls, and they're another classic monster I can add to my set. In addition, they are CR 1 creatures, meaning they pop up early and with some regularity in my campaigns.

For the last couple years, I've seen many requests for Gnoll miniatures from Paizo. I'm somewhat surprised that their inclusion in this set is met with some disappointment that they aren't Kytons. I suppose it just reinforces the old saying that you can't please all the people all the time.

I love the whole sarcophagus idea. It'll make for another excellent Mimic or Animated Object.

Yes! Finally a female giant. They are so underrepresented. It is awesome that they're finally putting one out there. I don't even collect the preprinted minis but this is one I will definitely have to get. She'll be worth the trouble of repainting to have her in my collection. Any word on just how tall she'll actually be?

Arikiel wrote:

The sarcophagus seems awesome! I find it hard to judge it from the render, as metallics always look different in hand than on screen, but frankly I don't even care that much, just the fact that I might be adding a sarcophagus to my scenes is awesome already.

Did I mention I love the Dungeon Dressing mini's?

This is awful! There's no way I'm going to be able to afford four to eight sarcophaguses! It looks great, but many I've played and run many adventures where you need multiple sarcophagus. At least these look inexpensive to manufacturer, so hopefully there will be two per case and a lot available on the secondary market. If they're rare, or as popular as I expect, then they'll fetch $20 or more each -- ouch!

All told, there are, I believe 3 female giants (Storm, Stone, and now Frost) currently in the Pathfinder battles line, 2 female trolls (The Matron and an Ice Trollop), at least 1 female gnoll, 2 female goblins. All in all Paizo is doing a wonderful job of upping the gender diversity in PPM.

As for there being multiple Gnolls in this set, Woot!!I have been requesting Lamashtu's favored practically since the line started, can't wait to get my hands on several of them.

Enjoy Maui Mr. Mona!

While I would love to take up my ongoing case subscription again, the additional cost is simply prohibitive for European customers. When I have to pay roughly fourty per cent of the case price on top due to customs and duties, it is cheaper to go hunting for collector's figures on eBay, unfortunately.

I am wondering if Paizo has any numbers on how large its European client base actually is, and whether that would not justify having a warehouse in the EU to avoid this sort of problem.

Isn't The Matron a sahuagin? And we can also include the Brinebrood Queen.

Well, that is a little disappointing. But if you keep putting out awesome reveals like these first few, I probably won't even notice. I'm really looking forward to building my gnoll army to epic proportions. As was mentioned above, these guys are good low level fodder, but as humanoids that can earn class levels I'm hoping for some cool rarer pieces that lend themselves to representing higher level challenges as well.

It really is a downer when international law hurts citizens.

Also I'd like to clarify that I am glad we're getting unique gnolls. I was just really looking forward to kytons. Sort of built myself up for disappointment.

My Bad, the Matron IS a sahuagin (which add's another race to the gender equality list), and there is also a female winter wolf (human form, but in the same set as a winter wolf in wolf form).

That's awesome. The all male races, of miniatures, was getting really aggravating. Traditionally it seemed like the only representation of women was for the anorexic, blonde, elf type. Like that's all woman should ever be or want to be. To this day I think elves are the only race with an even mix between the sexes. So the more female dwarves, orcs, giants, etc that are put out the happier I am. Maybe someday all of them will have a roughly 50/50 mix. :)

Halflings and gnomes have done relatively well with gender mix also, though still not 50/50.
I often get asked by customers what prepainted minis I have available to cover this or that gender/race/class/weaponry mix, and I don't feel too bad when they ask for something with very unusual weaponry and I can't help them, but I do feel bad when I can't accommodate them just because the gender isn't well represented.
Paizo, want to make a lot of players happy? More druids, and especially more female druids. I'm constantly telling people I can't give them the female druids they want. (And yes, I know about the Human Druid from H&M. I can't keep her in stock.)

Wow. I wasn't aware that the added costs for overseas shipping made it that bad. And I thought my shipping costs to Ohio, here in the middle-ish of the United States were high.

I wish there was some way to share part of my subscription discount with you or other Pathfinder Battles fans in Europe.

It didn't used to be this bad. These were added customs charges to EU countries sometime in 2013 I think, that increased shipping costs significantly.

Wow, that female Druid from the set is one of my least favorite miniatures from the Pathflinder Battles line. It's crazy to me that she's a tough one to keep in stock.

Hopefully the Iconics line will help out a bit, as there will be a good-looking Female Gnome druid, and a Hunter that can easily pass as a druid.

The NPC Codex could be a fountain of druid for use in the miniature line. There are plenty of male and female candidates in that book that have very earthy looks. Here are my favorites from each basic race:

Half-Elf Druid: Mistress of High Places (page 70). With the leaves on her cape and vines that dabble her wooden armor and wrap around her arms, there is no mistaking her for a druid.

Halfling: Dark Nature Priest (page 77). Hands down one of my favorite Halfling illustrations out of all the classes, and definitely one of my favorite druids, there is no denying this guy is a lover of nature. With his twisting wood staff, his leaf-painted face, and his earthy colors, he's got Druid written all over him. He's also got a pretty stern expression on his face, hinting at the potential tempest-like behavior of a chaotic servant of nature.

Half-Orc: Castaway (page 71). Covered in green, leafy armor and armed with a club and darkwood heavy shield, this guy looks ready to fight and defend his territory. A quick glance at the illustration shows a big set of antlers jutting out from his headband, as though in the process of wild shaping into an Elk. Both Half-Orc druids in this book look great, but for miniature purposes, the Castaway is unmistakably a druid.

Dwarf: Earthfather (page 79). This amazing illustration sees the Dwarven druid covered in wild ironwood full plate, a darkwood heavy wooden shield strapped to his back, and quarterstaff in hand. His hammer and spell pouch are attached at his belt, and there are sticks jutting out from either his armor or his shield, or both. He's got a long, white dwarven beard, with just enough green throughout it to give it that earth tinge. He's another guy I'd love to see a high-quality miniature of somewhere down the line.

Gnome: Fey Friend (page 72). It looks like we'll be getting a great new, high-quality gnome druid in the first set of Iconic miniatures. But staying true to the NPC Codex, I really think the Fey Friend Gnome would make an excellent druid miniature. She's covered in wooden and green armor, and looks ready to defend her fey friends.

Elf: Island Defender (page 66). I really like the different look to this character. She's in blue and green shades reminiscent of the water. She wears an ornate wooden mask, with a nice wooden shield and shortspear to use during her battles. There are so many different types of elven druids, but most of the miniature versions look like they'd be found in a forest. It would be nice to get an elven druid that has ties to the sea.

Human: Mud Shaman (page 68). I don't really have a favorite of the three human druids in the NPC Codex. If I were hunting for a human druid, I'd much prefer an illustration from somewhere else. For the sake of choosing something, I went with the Mud Shaman because he looks a bit tribal and I guess that's different.

Anyways, I'd love to see Erik pull out more things from the NPC Codex. I'm hoping that he at least considers it if the high-quality Iconics line proves a success. Even if they don't, he's shown he's willing to dip into this sourcebook for the occasional PC/NPC-friendly piece, such as the old Gnome wizard from the last set.

It's interesting to note that Heroes & Monsters contains a small number of fantasy figures Wiz Kids was experimenting with before we partnered with them. The Frost Giant is the best example of this. While the figure is super, super cool, it is not actually based on any Pathfinder artwork, which partially accounts for why he looks a bit different than the Frost Giants in our books.

The more you know…

I honestly don't know which dungeon dressings will come 2 to a case, but I'm almost willing to bet my personal collection that it won't be the sarcophagus.

With three pieces (including what amounts to a regular common figure in the form of the mummy), this thing screams production value. After holding this piece, there's just no way that it seems inexpensive to manufacture.

If it were a "regular" figure, I'm confident it would be a rare.

So, we'll see, but I think this is going to be a chase figure.

It's definitely something we've strongly considered. My sense is that we're not there yet, and we probably won't be there next year, but if the game keeps growing the way it has been and we keep making good decisions in other arenas, this idea is going to keep coming up until it happens.

As an aside, last year at Christmas I paid $175 in shipping for a Union Jack Dalek toy I could only find from Forbidden Planet UK. I paid the shipping fee without comment, as I realized what it was like to be on the other side of that particular equation.

So, I feel your pain. I hope we can work out a better solution to international shipping (particularly of large items) in the years to come.

You won't have to wait long for this.

My second favorite figure in the whole set (at the moment) is from the NPC Codex.

And I haven't shown him yet.

Really I just want to have a mini for all the PC combinations of basic class grouping, race, and sex.

Basic Class groupings:
Heavy Armor Type: Can stand in for a Fighter, Paladin, Cavalier, etc.
Medium Armor Type: Can stand in for a Cleric, Oracle, Inquisitor, etc.
Light Armor Type: Can stand in for a Rogue, Ranger, Alchemist, etc.
Caster Type: Can stand in for a Wizard, Sorcerer, Witch, etc.

Races: Human, Dwarf, Elf/Half-Elf, Halfling/Gnome, and Orc/Half-Orc.

Sex: Male or Female (in case you didn't know the basic options :p )

That's just 40 minis to cover all the basic PC combos. That said there are still some big gaps for Dwarves and Orcs/Half-Orcs for representing PCs with minis. Especially for women. But I'm getting off topic. I'm really hope to see more of what's coming out in this set. More female giant types I hope! :D

I'd love to see a specific slot for Bard added to your list, Arikiel. I know opinions vary widely on the bard, but he's one of my favorite classes to play. Unfortunately, he also happens to be one of the hardest types of classes of which to find a suitable miniature.

To be clear, I consider a good bard miniature to be a piece that clearly shows at least one musical instrument in his or her hand. Even if my character is a more oral-based bard, I often desire a piece with an instrument.

Well this has me excited!

Any clues, besides him being a he? Is he from one of the eleven base classes, or is he a prestige class guy? Maybe he's a surprise from the NPC section? Is he a martial character or a magic character?

Haha, I feel like a little kid trying to guess his Christmas present.

Oh I agree of course. It would be nice to have one for all 18 classes from the CRB, APG, and UM. But it's hard enough to find just 4 different female Half-Orc minis. Let alone 18. So I was just looking at what I would consider the bare minimum for repressing the various PC options.

I agree with you, but request at least some credit for producing two half-elf females so far, Irabeth and Imrijka in Wrath of the Righteous.

In any event, I'm on the case.

The Iconic Heroes sets are going to help a lot with these.

I strongly second this. Customs and duties (and VAT), as well as the uncertainty this brings is a primary reason for me to not order from Paizo directly, but instead use a local supplier for my miniatures.

It would also make it easier to deal with payment, as there's no currency exchange going on.

It would also help a lot to have a place to more easily meet and discuss with gamers within the EU for things such as mini trading, sharing news, etc.

I think having both female and male miniatures of the various races is great, it really helps to more accurately represent what is in your game on the table.

I think it is of key importance to keep the period / setting in mind with the miniature design and distribution though.

Yes, women can and do take up arms in real life as well as in fantasy settings and there should be miniatures to represent them. Even modern, armies from 'enlightened' nations don't have 50% female soldiers, so it'd be unrealistic to have half of the pikemen featuring klockenbooty, for example.

Still, having some female mini's of various races, including monster ones, is a great thing and I think the Pathfinder line has done a great job of this so far! I am looking forward to seeing more of this in the future.

What I'd like to see more of, in regards to female miniatures though, is period appropriate clothes. Women of the period almost always wore long skirts and dresses, yet most female mini's are either cross-dressing or at a high risk of catching a cold. Mind you Pathfinder does have appropriately dressed female characters (and many of those are cherished parts of my collection), but they are almost always rares. That's a pet thing of mine though, so I suppose I'll make due ^_^

I am wondering if Paizo has any numbers on how large its European client base actually is, and whether that would not justify having a warehouse in the EU to avoid this sort of problem.

It's definitely something we've strongly considered. My sense is that we're not there yet, and we probably won't be there next year, but if the game keeps growing the way it has been and we keep making good decisions in other arenas, this idea is going to keep coming up until it happens.

As soon as this happens, I'll up my subscription to include all of the non-book items I currently avoid. I only subscribe to the maps as they normally just fall below the threshold for paying VAT, but if one slips and I get two in a month it's expensive!

While I would love to take up my ongoing case subscription again, the additional cost is simply prohibitive for European customers. When I have to pay roughly fourty per cent of the case price on top due to customs and duties, it is cheaper to go hunting for collector's figures on eBay, unfortunately.

I live in Germany and have been collecting the Pathfinder Battles miniatures since the beginning but my local dealer hasn´t received the "Legends of Golarion" and "Lost Coast" from his supplier so i haven´t any from these series but almost all from the others.

If paizo had a european warehouse i would order a brick or case from these series but as it is it´s too expensive and complicated...

If I retire next year, I could run the Canadian distribution centre out of my basement ;)

I agree to a point. For PC minis I think you should always have 50/50 split just due to PCs being exceptional individuals and it should be inclusive to all players. Also for tribal races like orcs and goblins wherein the whole tribe could be required to fight to defend their relatively small population it would seem best to include 50/50.
