Dispatches from the Front: Adventure Card Guild in the Wild

Tuesday, October 7, 2014

Hello, Pathfinders.

Last night, the Lone Shark crew and I headed to Uncle's Games in Bellevue for a soft launch of the Adventure Card Guild. Despite short notice, we had several people come out to play games with us, and we all got to sit down and play with fans.

Now you see me, now you don't! *poof* Ruh-roh.

Jumping into the deep end.

Forumite zeroth_hour and I sat down to play the first Card Guild scenario, Ghosts of the Deep. He brought a well-built Agna, and I, being an idiot, decided that the Mental-focused sorcerer Qualzar would be an excellent choice for a scenario full of undead.

Despite my opting us into hardcore mode, zeroth_hour defeated our former captain Arron Ivy a full turn before Qualzar would've bitten the dust. Victory!

Mike's Zarlova and GaryGaby's Lem also survived despite Mike's legendary die-rolling prowess. Chad's table of new players, who opted to try the organized play scenario because they are awesome, convinced the fine folks at Uncle's to stay open a bit later so they too could emerge triumphant.

I'd like to thank Morgan from Uncle's and Big Kyle and Tony from our incredible volunteer army for making this event happen. Share your Adventure Card Guild launch stories in the comments!

We aim to please. And misbehave.

I _can_ take credit for the Agna build, though technically I think I had 1 choice in the deck construction :) I did get a lot of scouting in (yay scouting!)

I actually missed the fact that I could discard my Longsword for an extra die, thus solidifying the margin instead of hitting it by the skin of our teeth.

I call myself a "streaky" die roller. My RotR Amiri was legendary for fumbling checks that should have easily passed. My Thornwatch demo game, on the other hand, I blew the dice out of the water with 3 or 4 criticals.

And I got a Warhammer + Magic Leather Armor upgrade for my efforts, woohoo!

Thanks Tanis and everyone for putting this together!

EDIT: I remember that Draugr. I think I had to encounter him twice (failed the first time). I told Tanis "please don't bury my longsword!" when we did the random bury.

MVP: Longsword
Workhorse: Blessing of the Gods and the Scout ability
Slops: Fortitude checks. Constitution is actually useful in S&S!

Not true. See below, emphasis mine.

When the Adventure Card Guild logo is added to the Logos package, then it will be covered by the CUP, but not until such time as that update is made.

Great to see that it went off well in Seattle! Our third night here in Portland is tomorrow, and I just got word another two stores are interested in adding Guild play to their weekly rotation!

So far our MVP card across several games has been... CURE!

What's "hardcore mode"?

Option 3: Nightmare Mode

Create your deck using the Starting Character rules and
play at a lower power level than everyone else. Make sure
everyone else at the table is okay with this. Since the
game is cooperative, you’re hampering the whole table by
choosing this option, not just yourself.

This is what I'm assuming they're referencing.

I'm pretty sure that isn't what Tanis meant by hardcore mode. Since this is the first scenario of the season, Higher Level Characters don't come into play. I think Tanis was just referring to using a character with Mental-trait powers in a scenario full of undead (undead being immune to the Mental trait), putting the team at a handicap.

Zaister, look at the Guide to OP for the PFSACG. It's a free download.

Tanis "deliberately" gimped her character by choosing to use him in a scenario where there were many undead and plants. Undeads and plants always have text that indicates they're immune to Mental trait effects. This includes both of Qualzar's text abilities. She also had a Confusion in the deck which was Mental.

Sorcerers tend to have less spells in their deck than Wizards do, so they depend on their Spontaneous Casting ability ("discard a card to roll CHA + 1d6 with Attack, Magic, X trait, this counts as a spell") a lot more.

Whoops, that should be "use Arcane skill" instead of "roll CHA"

Hickman? You mean Tracy Hickman? What beef do you have with her?

This was only 30 minutes away from my home. I wish I could have gone! Hope to go to the next one.
