Friday Publisher Preview: Feeling Iconic

Friday, August 1, 2014

As of this morning, we've officially crossed over into August, which means that Gen Con Indy is THIS MONTH. Please pardon me while I go curl up in a fetal position in the corner of my office and suck my thumb for a bit.

There, that's much better. As we march toward the Big Show, we've still got plenty of figures from November's The Lost Coast set of prepainted fantasy miniatures to reveal. Since we've been spending so much time previewing new iconic characters for the Advanced Class Guide these last few weeks, I've got iconics on the brain. So it seemed like a great time to preview the THREE iconics in this set.

Up first this week is Damiel, Iconic Alchemist. This wily elf enjoys brewing potions, throwing bombs, and morphing his body. WizKids did a fantastic job on the sculpt. While you can't quite make out his full backpack in this photo, I can assure you that it is just as complicated as the original Wayne Reynolds illustration. Lots of clear tubes and bottles on this guy, as well. Damiel is a Medium figure slated at the rare rarity.

Here is our iconic oracle, Alahazra. The image posted above is the paint master, so it's missing a lot of the intricate detail work that is stamped on during the factory process (this is called a "tampo"). Most of the really intricate sigils and designs on our figures are tampos, and it's always a little difficult to know how the final figure will look from the paint master.

Here's an in-production shot of Alahazra's tampo. Notice how this version of the figure contains a lot of design elements on the robes that the paint master lacks. Given the intricate designs on Alahazra's robes I was a bit worried about how this one would turn out, but I think it looks great. Alahazra, Iconic Oracle is a Medium, rare figure.

And, because YOU demanded it, here's our iconic pig, Squealy Nord. Old Nord figures in our "classic" (?) Free RPG Day adventures We Be Goblins! and We Be Goblins, Too!, and makes the perfect addition to the We Be Goblins Pathfinder Battles Builder Series we released last year. Squealy Nord is a Small, uncommon figure.

Minimate Update!

I've mentioned on previous Friday Previews that, in addition to four goblin promo figures we'll have at Gen Con, we'll also be releasing four Minimate 2-Packs featuring Pathfinder characters and monsters. Together, these 12 figures serve as an official "Preview" of the Pathfinder Iconic Heroes Boxed Set to be released in October.

This put me in the unique position to build the 2-Packs out of whatever creatures I wanted. You'll never guess who I picked first!

Here we have the unkillable OSTOG THE UNSLAIN VS. CAIRN WIGHT 2-Pack! Careful readers of paizo.com will no doubt recognize Ostog the Unslain as my own personal Pathfinder RPG player character, from James Jacobs's in-office Pathfinder campaign. Ostog's early stats appeared in the Pathfinder Chronicles: NPC Guide, and he recently featured in the backstory I wrote about his brother, the iconic skald Hakon. You might think it's corny for me to use my own player character as one of the Minimates, and you'd be right. What good is absolute power if you don't abuse it once in a while?

Facing off against Ostog is the Cairn Wight, a nasty undead variant creature from the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary. Both Ostog and the Cairn Wight come with swords. The Cairn Wight comes with a removable helmet and a shield. If you really want, you could give Ostog the Cairn Wight's helmet and give the Cairn Wight Ostog's hair, because all Minimates parts are interchangeable. Just don't tell Ostog you got the idea from me, ok? We need to remain friends if he's to keep his "Unslain" title for four more levels until he retires...

The last set I'll reveal today is the HUMAN RANGER VS. LAMIA MATRIARCH. The Human Ranger was an early design prototype our partners at Diamond Select Toys put together, and when the time came to put together the preview set, I snatched him out of oblivion. Sure, he doesn't have a proper name, but he does have a cool hooded cloak, some sweet, sweet stubble, a bow, a quiver, and three arrows.

The Lamia Matriarch is probably responsible for more player character deaths in the Rise of the Runelords campaign than any other creature, so I just had to include her here. She comes with two curved swords, bracelets, and an amazing snake body.

I'll reveal the next two Minimates 2-Packs in next week's Friday Preview. Until then, I leave you with an image of the Godhead to watch over and bless your player characters for the rest of the week.

Squealy Nord. My We Be Goblins Game is now complete.

Best iconics ever! And Squealy Nord. Thank you Erik. So hoping wizkids have put some time into practicing faces, these are two more with great facial features. My fear with Alhazra is that she will end up with a small featureless face like Seela. Both have some crazy and incredible level, the sheer number of objects on Damiel is going to take some serious picking out in the painting, and that tampo makes Alhazra really pop. I can understand the rare slot for them.

As for Nord, since he's uncommon I can get a small litter of 3-4 in a case. Not 100% certain why I'd need this many, or indeed the potential 8 I can get from 2 cases but I will find a use.

Definitely the best set to date Erik. I believe that 33 of 45 now, with 12 to go. We've seen 22 small/medium, 10 large and the Gargantuan. If it's like RoW that means 2 large to go and 10 medium/small. I'm excited and with over 3 months to go until release I'm also wondering what is going to come up - 12 previews leaves 4 weeks worth afterall.

As for the minimates. While I really like the look, I'm just not sure I can justify buying them to my wife :(

They are $5 each. Do you ask her before you order a grande latte? ;)

Lantern Lodge

The figures are $5 each or the two packs are $5 each?

Squeely Nord!! And Alhazra, nice. They more than make up for the additional daisy-eating elf in the set. Though as pointy ears go, our resident alchemist isn't as bad as most. Set keeps looking better and better.

I'll have to run WBG and WBG 2 when he comes out.

Can't wait to see the 2 new Iconics paint jobs. Hopefully, we won't have a repeat of the Feiya incident.

Out of curiosity will we be seeing anymore of the Builder Series? Or has that product line been put into a holding pattern. I literally just realized how long it had been since I had seen any movement on that front.

You are an evil man Mr Mona. Perhaps I shall sacrifice that latte.

I too am interested in hearing about the builder. Line, or any added lies really. Perhaps some word on the huge minis, or the evolution line. Been quiet on that front.

Silver Crusade

Love Squeely! I'll pick him up but alas I was able to get a great stand-in for him via Chinese toy (ebay) piglet "figure". Now a Guffy mini...........

Who doesn't like SQUEELY NORD?

I can only look forward to We Be Goblins 3.

YOU CAN BE A BIG PIG TOO!

One thing I dont understand but hope is being resolved is the general quality decline especially on the pc type figs. Just got 4 werewolves from h&m in the mail and they have eyes painted but most of the latest humans dont have this level of detail. Rise seems to have a very good quality paint jobs as well but some of the more recent sets are not nearly as good

Really hoping this set returns to that extraordinary quality level seenin earlier sets.

I must agree, this set is quite a winner. But do spend some time on the iconic's faces. They are way to cool to rush into blob land.

I'm amused at what reaction the pig is getting. But, why not? The goat was well received. Who'd of thought barn animals would be such a hit.

Way to go Erik!!! More domestic animals!!! Very good for hungry monster and farm encounters. More things we need.
1) Mounts (riderless and with rider)(Different horses light and heavy, camels riding dog)- They are always around on random encounters especially during travel.
2) Carts and caravan wagons- Used often enough by npc and pcs.
3) More commoners. Barkeep, blacksmith, shopkeeper, farmers, regular folks- Any combat happening out in an urban center, there will be folks in the way and around.

Frankly if you make these, you'll do well. Especially if your focus is miniatures for roleplay purpose. I hope you like the suggestions.

It's probably charitable at this point to call it a holding pattern. Basically, neither of the sets we did generated sales high enough for WizKids to want to do more.

Short of sending an assassination squad to the factory I have done absolutely everything I can to resolve this issue. WizKids is very aware of our position on this issue, and I'm assured that they are going to be watching the next set very, very closely.

But is their watching going to help? (Yes i know that is an unfair question at this point)

As for the previews, I love them all. I had made my own Squealy Nord but it will be nice to have an official one.

Also Erik, I am still begging for a pack mule figure. Just thougth I would toss that out there.

For what it's worth I have faith. I can see the line means a lot yo you Dnd I'm sure there will be definite improvements. Personally I think the line is very strong and I'm very much a long term backer.

Big thumbs up for a lack mule too. How about a red mantis?

Oh and what is your inclusion this time? loved ghw all liked and the gibrileth etc

Paizo Employee Publisher, Chief Creative Officer

Red Mantis is on my list for near future inclusion. I'd like to do two or three of them, including the one on the cover of the Serpent's Skull adventure as the leader. MAYBE the set after next, pretty likely after that, though. It's still high on the list.

As for my personal choice this time… really I got to pick all of the figures in this set, so no one is more dear to me than any other. Maybe the Gnome Eldritch Knight. He might be the weirdest.

Question about Squealy Nord: Will the base just say pig, or will this be the 100% official Squealy Nord Pathinder Battles miniature?

Maybe it's the angle, position, or light, but that pig has some scary eyes. Bottomless black pits ...

This is sad news indeed. I have both sets and like them a lot. In fact, next game night the PC's will be going into some ancient ruins inhabited by the entire 'We Be Goblins' set (with the exception of the goblin snake shaman).

Would a different format resuscitate the line? Perhaps fixed packs, like the Beginner Box Heroes? I'm sure this has all been discussed at length, but one can hope!

Eric you mentioned a
"Pathfinder Iconic Heroes Boxed Set to be released in October"?

Will this be a collection of the Pathfinder Battles Iconics

SEELAH, HUMAN PALADIN (H&M)
HARSK (RR)
SEONI (RR)
LEM, HALFLING BARD (SS)
AMIRI, HUMAN BARBARIAN (SS)
SELTYIEL, HALF-ELF MAGUS (SAS)
LIRIANNE, HUMAN GUNSLINGER (SAS)
LINI, GNOME DRUID (LG)
SAJAN, HUMAN MONK (LG)
ALAIN, HUMAN CAVALIER (WR)
IMRIJKA (WR)
FEIYA (RW)
?

That would be awesome!!!

At a SRP of $39.99 i know i would buy it!

Damiel looks great! He's a very recognisable iconic, so I hope they do a good job on this complicated mini! Alhazra is a very cool one as well, and it gives us a nice little insight into the production process, so that's neat!

Squely Nord! Having a pig is totally awesome, the fact that its an "iconic" pig is even greater! Only complaint I have is that its an uncommon instead of a common ^_^

I'm also very happy to hear more things like mounts, cart / wagons and commoners coming. I've been advocating for those for a while now, so good to hear its being picked up! Pack mule also sounds awesome.

They have repeatedly said they will not re-release the past iconics, even as re-paints. Maybe as a complete re-sculpt...

I suspect the lower than anticipated sales experienced with the builder sets may have been due to the miniatures being not visible / random. I certainly understand (and support) the rational and logistics of why the minis in the full collector sets are not visible.

When people want to buy a band of goblins or a group of skeletons for their game, they may possibly not be as interested in buying the past Builder Sets due to the blind randomness. About 33% of the mins in We Be Goblins would not satisfy those just wanting to pick up some generic goblin troops. The same goes for those just wanting some skeletons or zombies, however the % chance of them getting these would be much lower.

I think the concept of Builder Sets is great, but I would go a different direction with them:
- Make them a set of visible miniatures.
- The set would contain 2 each of 3 different types of miniatures. (Total of 6 miniatures).
- At least 2 would be re-painted minis from past sets. For cost-effective production purposes, likely all 3 would be re-painted miniatures.
- The miniatures in the set would all have to be generic in appearance (i.e. no goblins in wedding dresses)

It is my belief the above sets would sell well (I of course have no idea of what WizKid's definition of "well" is). These would appeal to the people that don't buy minis off the secondary market.

Anyways those are just my random thoughts on builder sets from a business point of view. From an addicted collector's point of view, I really liked the past Builders sets, especially We Be Goblins. It was also great getting some more new sculpts in these releases.

Technically, we have just 'officially' seen 32. The 33rd is the Large Green Dragon which Eric has not yet previewed. Currently, the image we have seen of the Large Green Dragon, was from a projector screen at a convention.

I agree that this is probably the next logical step for a product like this.

The problem is that WizKids has TONS of evidence, above and beyond the Pathfinder Battles line, that suggests that visible sets do not sell very well. They are thus very reticent to do them.

Stay tuned, though. I am working on it.

Thanks for answering my question, Eric and Scribbling Rambler.

Eric, you say, that visible sets don´t sell well.

The "Pathfinder Beginner Box Heroes Miniatures Set" is the TOP SELLER title under Pathfinder Battles.
I bought one, and will probably buy another one, it´s great.

Another 4-Pack or 2-packs would be great (Townsfolk?)

Somebody mentioned something about invisible minis before - Wizards of the coast has some in their new "Icons of the Realms" set:
http://www.minisgallery.com/dnd1

But i like the Pathfinder minis much better than the d&d ones.
So far, i got a few boosters from every release but
THE LOST COAST looks to be the best so far, there is no single one that´s crappy.

I bought the White Dragon Evolution Box, it´s awesome,
but i didn´t like the Red Dragon Evolution Box.

May you continue making great minis and i´ll continue buying them.
