Pathfinder Battles Preview: One More Tri

Friday, March 28, 2014

In my Las Vegas-fueled GAMA Trade Show enthusiasm of last week, I somehow missed the fact that the upcoming Reign of Winter set includes at least three more alien creatures from the frigid world of Triaxus, as featured in the fifth Reign of Winter Adventure Path adventure, The Frozen Stars. Check out last week’s preview blog for a sense of some of my original trepidation about including “furry elves” in the miniatures set.

As it turns out, I shouldn’t have worried so much. The set’s Triaxians look absolutely fantastic, and all of them easily double as other creatures for GMs who have no intention of taking their campaigns to the stars.

First up this week is the menacing Drakelands Barbarian, a sworn enemy of the Dragon Legion officers we previewed last week. I’m holding the final production run version of this figure as I write this, and I’m blown away by the paint quality WizKids has pulled off on this set. The Barbarian has a great feral snarl on her face, and her armor looks fantastic. Her fur is not too furry, and the figure easily doubles as a rather pale half-orc. From the wooden shield to the fine sculpt detail, it’s almost impossible for me to believe that I’m looking at a common. But I most certainly am. The Drakelands Barbarian is a fantastic-looking Medium common.

Speaking of fantastic Medium figures, here we have Commander Pharamol, the cover figure from the The Frozen Stars adventure. Pharamol commands the Dragon Legion aerie of Spurhorn, and could end up as either an ally or an enemy of the player characters. One thing is for sure, he’s is absolutely PERFECT for a male catfolk ranger. Again, the paint detail on this guy is unbelievable, with amazing red outlines on his white skirt, brilliant gold trim along his fine green cloak, and an excellently executed face. If a near-perfect sculpt and excellent paint job is enough to convince you to take a second look at a weird miniature, you’re going to love this guy. Commander Pharamol is a Medium miniature slated at the rare rarity.

And then we have General Malesinder, an enormous female silver dragonkin with a sword made of ice, some cool jewelry, and an absolute hate-on for Commander Pharamol and his Dragon Legion ilk. If you can handle weapon-wielding dragons, this figure is just about perfect. Your players are definitely going to freak out when this nasty lady hits the table. She’s great, and looks even better in-hand. General Malesinder is a Large, rare figure.

Ok, now I’m pretty sure I’ve featured all of the Triaxian aliens in the set. Except for one, that is. I’ll get to that furry fellow in a future week.

In the meantime, please consider setting up an ongoing case subscription to ensure you don’t miss a single Reign of Winter figure.

Don’t get caught out in the cold!

I agree that Commander Pharamol would make an amazing catfolk ranger! beautiful job. Love General Malesinder as well. Unfortunately I can't see the barbarian yet, as the link is broke. :(

All-in-all though another great set!

Please Announce who the other Iconic is going to be :)

Really liking all 3, though I'm also looking forward to a closer look at the barbarian when the link is fixed :)

"As featured in the fifth Reign of Winter adventure" ... but, "Frozen Stars" was part 4 (wasn't it)?

I really like the preview for this week.

And Erik, I have indeed set-up a PF Battles case subscription.

(Now, please tell me that a "Jade Regent" set is in the offing). Please.

Yeah, sorry. It's the fourth adventure. :)

The link for the Drakelands Barbarian did not open up in Chrome when I clicked to see the details. This is indeed a great set.

It looks like they forgot to upload the large image (WZK71459_DrakelandsBarbarian_500.jpeg) to the source file.

Link is broke. I love all 3 and am fine with a sword wielding dragon type! I'm not familiar with Triaxus, but I am absolutely OK with the minis! Great job! I look forward to getting them.

Erik: Don't be overly concerned about minis such as Triaxius. I think your biggest concern should be when you present modern minis. That's much more of a contention for some than cool looking fantasy type creatures. These all look great!

Somehow I'm just tickled by a dragon wearing a belt :-)

I am eager to see a better quality picture of this mini!

I have also been waiting for that so I can update the PathfinderMinis.com site.

Thanks for the link. I counted 9 that have not yet been previewed. I have added them to the Reign of Winter Gallery.

I'm not 100% sure that there will be another iconic. Has Erik said there will be?

The iconic party used in this AP is Feiya (revealed), Imrijka (in WotR), Lini (in LoG), and Valeros (BBH).
The iconics who have not been minified are Reiko and Hayato (probably being saved for an eventual Jade Regent set), Balazar, Alahazra, and Damiel. The last 3 don't really feel like a fit for me, especially Balazar, because he would require another mini for his eidolon.
They have released a set before with only 1 iconic.

I actually hope that I'm wrong, because I love the iconic minis, but I don't think we can assume there is another until it's announced.

True, there was a set with only one iconic in it, the first set, Heroes and Monsters. It was also the smallest set released, and the only one with no real thematic structure. Also Wrath of the Rightgeous technically had 3 Iconics (Imrijka, and Alain, and Alain on Horseback). Balazar is unlikely (requiring a second slot for his Eidolon) and Alahazra strikes me as unlikely (as far as I know, Iconics have always been split 1 male and 1 female) which by process of elimination make Damiel the only logical choice.

Heroes and Monsters was the same size as this set, 55 miniatures. And Legends of Golarion was also thematically loose.

But I agree with you that Damiel is the most likely of those 3 remaining characters from the APG.

On the bright side, there should be a lot more available iconics around the time of the next minis release :)

HM had only 40+1 figures.

And the key to Legends of Golarion is that it was thematically loose, not thematically non-existant. It was still tied together rather nicely with a large assortment of critters native to Golarion alone (reefclaw, charu-ka,the akhata, Segauthi, and Dehrii), organizations (the tooth gang, eagle knights, hellknights, Thrune agent, Knight of Ozem), NPCs native to the setting (The three Kings, the queen, The Sandpoint Devil) and Golarions unique twist on such creatures as genii, serpent folk, demons, and kobolds. H and M by contrast was about as generic as one could get with it's stand out figure, the frost giant, only even loosely resembling the one in the PF Bestiary 1.

Apologies.

I couldn't remember, and looked on Kor's site. There is an error on the main page, but I should have counted.

Not hard to guess : the 9 are :

Grindtooth, snow Goblin
One of the Brothers Three
Hoarpanther Zombie
Zorka (female kikimora)
Centaur (don't remember the name)
The Queen Elvanna
Roper
Wolliped
and a Crone Queen

They may be even more hidden in the pics but I won't spoil all :-)
