GM Rewards

Monday, February 10, 2014

Season 5 is nearly halfway done. That means we've posted faction head letters (stickied) in the Faction Talk section of the Pathfinder Society Organized Play messageboard. We'll also be sending out the email update to registered Pathfinder Society players as an additional heads-up, and we're frequently exploring other ways to get the word out.

Over the past three seasons, the Pathfinder Society campaign has published special scenarios that are exclusive to 4-star GMs, 5-star GMs, Venture Captains, and Venture Lieutenants—both to reward our top judges and to incentivize others to GM more and earn those stars. When Pathfinder Society Scenario #2–EX: The Midnight Mauler first came out in early 2011, the campaign had one 5-star GM, about half a dozen 4-star GMs, and 18 newly minted Venture Captains. We've since grown to over 50 5-star GMs, more than 150 4-star GMs, and 345 Venture Captains and Venture Lieutenants! Rather impressive!

Since then, we've introduced quite a few new GM rewards that continue to reward and incentivize the campaign's excellent volunteers to keep sharing their hobby with others: limited replay and the star bonus on "shirt re-rolls." Today we're announcing both a new reward and a change to how we're handling the exclusive scenario this year.

The Exclusive

This year we're releasing The Ruins of Bonekeep, Part 1: The Silent Grave as an exclusive scenario for qualifying GMs, who can now run the adventure anywhere. These GMs should see the scenario in their downloads early this week. Keep in mind that when qualifying for one's fifth star, all Ruins of Bonekeep adventures contribute to a GM's 10 required Exclusive or Special events.

GM Star Chronicle

Back when Mike first became Campaign Coordinator, I remember sending him an elaborate proposal for a GM reward system. Back then it was clunky, required heavy IT support, and accurately reflected how new I was to booncraft, so the idea faded from memory. We recently rediscovered those old plans, blew off the dust, and (with the help of some clever Venture Captains and Venture Lieutenants) revised the concept for distribution. In addition to being available for download from this blog, we will add these to the Free Products page in the next day or so.

The GM Star Chronicle sheet is a one-page reward that provides benefits that scale with a player's stars and a character's level. Each represents a character's tutelage and special training with one of the three Masters: Aram Zey, Kreighton Shaine, or Marcos Farabellus. When you meet both criteria for a boon (such as the GM having 3 stars and the character being level 5+), you can skip a Day Job roll or spend 1 Prestige Point to train with your patron and gain that boon's benefits. At this time, each GM can only select and assign one such Chronicle sheet. The exception to this limit is a 5-star GM, who can select and assign an additional Chronicle sheet to a different character for each additional 50 tables of GM credit he or she earns (two sheets at 200 games, three sheets at 250, et cetera).

I'm excited to hear what new characters these inspire and how existing characters might connect with these eminent instructors.

Well done! I don't have words to express how awesome this is and how awesome it is to have you on board John (and Mike).

Whoa.

So, just to be clear, I can put one of these (my choice) on a character. As the character levels--assuming my star count matches--he unlocks each of these boons in turn, yes?

Then for every 50 tables after 150, I can do it again?

That's pretty awesome.

Yes, but do keep in mind the 1 PP or Day Job "cost" to activation for each ability!

So using this boon on a 3rd level character, while I have 3 stars, am I able to earn both the first level boon (Diverse Training) as well as the second level boon (Oft-Lectured) at the same time? Presumably earned in the space of at least 2 scenarios, one boon per day job/prestige sacrifice.

And then when I hit 5th level, I'll also have access to the third level boon (Essential Field Agent)?

Question about the 7th level benefits on each sheet - if we're buying 10 charge wands, shouldn't the cost be level of spell * caster level * 150gp? 750gp should be for a full wand...

Besides that point, this blog is awesome! Thanks for the cool stuff!

Interesting choice. I would call this about 70-80% as 'special' as an exclusive scenario in general, since this was fairly well limited previously. And it brings it to a broader audience on an 18-month delay from release - that's a good thing.

Sadly, I have zero interest in playing or running this.

Well yeah--by far! My favorite is the 5-Star ability for Kreighton Shaine.

That's the way that I read it.

Also notice that one of the boons The Spells Know All Secrets on the Student of Spells chronicle applies to all of one's Society characters.

i don't seem to be able to download the boon. i get a page that says "The requested URL was not found on this server, or you do not have permission to access this area."

Looks like they took down the chronicle to update that cost thing.

I won't lie, I'm a more than little disappointed. I became a 4-star GM after Day of the Demon had been out for some time, so I only got to run it once as an exclusive. Now, Bonekeep is a scenario that a lot of my local players have played - it's going to make it exceptionally hard to get those last few Specials in before hitting fifth star. This is also disappointing, given that the season 4 exclusive was so combat heavy.

1/5

oh nice, I get a choice
oh wait, no I don't

4/5

If they're updating, they may want to make the language a little more clear on the Vaults of the Ten boon. Considering the problems people have had with items on certain chronicle sheets, it might need to be a bit clearer that the PC is purchasing an item, not getting.

I'd change it from:
"and pick an item to use in your adventures."
to
"and pick an item to purchase for your adventures."

I know it says purchase in the next sentence, but...people like to assume the most favorable interpretation possible.

Just to be clear, you don't have to be a 4 or 5 star GM to run Bonekeep at a convention, correct? Because I am supposed to run it this weekend.

Yeah ... I haven't decided how I feel about this.

On the Paizo side, this makes a lot of sense. There's no point in keeping it con-exclusive forever, because there will be other con-exclusive mods, and you don't want cons to become just con-exclusive mods, so you need to cycle them. If they retired it, people would complain, so it was going to be a general release eventually. This mid-stage probably seems like a good neutral ground. Also, they don't have to have another scenario written, which is also a good thing.

On the other hand, though, it makes it less special as a scenario (since it's not con-only now) and less special as an exclusive (since it's not exclusive to VOs and 4+ stars; it's exclusive to VOs and 4+ stars and anyone who's already run it at a con).

Two concerns.
1: When this is released as the Exclusive scenario, is it no longer going to be available for any con-GM? Which is to say, can anyone still run this at a con, or is it "exclusive crowd or con setting?" Like, if I went to a con today where they were going to run Day of the Demon (which is still exclusive for a few days), I couldn't run it. Is that going to become the case with Bonekeep? I'm guessing not, since I know cons scheduling it as far out as May already. But what does that say about the nature of exclusivity in this context?
2: Is this what we can expect for the next 3 exclusive releases, too?

You know, at first I said I was ambivalent about this, but now I think I'm just conflicted.

(That was a joke.)

If I'm not mistaken, that's a one time cost per boon, not a per scenario cost.

Is this restricted to higher star GM's?

Or a VO...

But I imagine that if your running it at an approved convention that you'd still be allowed to run it.

This is a good point. For those conventions who have gotten Bonekeep Part 1 approved at their cons for the next couple months, and have folks set to run it who are not 4-star+ or V-O, do we need to find a person who can run the exclusive, or are they good for those conventions?

No, they seem to have taken it down. Hopefully to fix a typo on it (where one of the boons was to purchase a 10 charge wand for the price of a fully charged wand).

So I assign this to a character, and in the next session it gets nommed on by Ghouls, and then...?

Should this be: "each GM may only have one of these Chronicle sheets assigned to a living character at a time"?

Any possibility we could get an "easy-mode" version for bonekeep? After the difficulty of Day of the Demon, I don't think I'll be able to get more than one table together locally otherwise :(.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the boon sheet. I certainly believe that I'll be using this on a character idea I had been developing anyway, so that's great. I just have to figure out what race boon to tie with it. Giving up a day job roll...Not a huge loss unless you really build for it.

That is kinda the antithesis of the design. People play it because of the challenge, not as "just another scenario to play."

I am disappointed with the decision to make Bonekeep the new Exclusive. I understand the reason behind it, but it's not what I was hoping for.

I do appreciate the work that Mike & John have done to create incentive for GMs, as well as reward those who continue to progress past the 150 mark. The new boon sounds cool (haven't seen it yet) and should do the trick based on reactions above.

I look forward to more PFS growth and a bigger chunk of the Paizo budget next year, which might see us return to an Exclusive worthy of that title.

Lady O's sadface reason:
Ok, I will admit it, I am bummed there is no Season 5-EX this year though.. The Extra specials were a lot of fun, and I really REALLY wanted one for this season, since it was my first full season as a 4-Star. And not all of us like big crazy dungeon crawls like Bonekeep. So for me, it's just going to sit in my downloads box and gather dust, cause it's not any fun for me to run. But I can understand, you guys can only do so much. So I shall remain content.

I personally, am not against Bonekeep. (Nor am I ever against free gaming stuff.) But just as an FYI, Bonekeep Episode I came out this time *last* year. So at this point in the season and game rotaion, a lot of us have gone through the adventure at least one if not twice already.

(Additional Note: A lot of us already also have it too. So it kind of *isn't* that exclusive when a good number of 4-5 Stars/VO's already have it in their boxes.)

Now the addendum, that we can play it *anywhere* is nice. But Bonekeep *for me* doesn't compliment my GM style. I am not a combat dungeon-room-by-room grinder GM. Last year's special gave us that dungeon feel with RP twists that I loved. And it was super creepy. :D

Maybe next year! But for now, I shall enjoy my boons and be content with what leadership is doing. They have done a lot of good stuff, and I am happy to see them taking steps to show love to the GM's. :D
