Bestiary 4 Preview #3

Tuesday, October 15, 2013

Any day now, Bestiary 4 will be arriving at game tables, ready to unleash a terrifying horde of beasts, demons, psychopomps, dragons, and mythic foes. Last week, we took a look at one of the cutest, cuddliest monsters in the book, the pipefox. But all that sweetness can lead to an upset stomach and tooth decay. Fortunately, the tooth fairy is here to help you with that, by forcefully yanking out your teeth! These obnoxious fey are sure to keep you up at night. Just don't expect them to leave a gold piece under your pillow when they're done with their grisly work.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Death Throes (Su) When killed, a tooth fairy explodes into a cloud of sparkling white fairy dust that clings to creatures within 5 feet. This glittery substance has a stench so foul that it sickens any creature coated by it for 1d4 rounds (Fortitude DC 10 negates). This is a poison effect. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Pliers (Su) Each tooth fairy owns a pair of pliers it uses to torment its victims. In the hands of a tooth fairy, the pliers deal damage as a +1 dagger wielded by a Medium creature. The pliers have hardness 10 and 3 hit points. If its pliers are destroyed, a tooth fairy is stunned for 1 round. If the tooth fairy is killed, the pliers rust away into worthless splinters 1d4 rounds later. A tooth fairy can create a new pair of pliers by spending one hour crafting (no materials required), which destroys the previous pair. The pliers grant the tooth fairy the Greater Dirty Trick feat and a +4 bonus on dirty trick and steal combat maneuvers.

Tricky Thief (Su) A tooth fairy can use a dirty trick combat maneuver with its pliers to pinch an opponent’s fingers, or a steal combat maneuver to steal an opponent’s tooth. A finger pinch deals 1 point of Dexterity damage. Stealing a tooth deals 1 point of Charisma damage and 1 point of bleed damage. If the stolen tooth is reattached within 10 minutes and the character receives any amount of magical healing, the tooth reattaches, the bleed damage ends, and the Charisma damage is cured.

And here I thought the dentist was bad. At least they bother to use anesthesia. That’s all for this week. Next week, we will close out our look at Bestiary 4 with a foe that is more than meets the eye!

Are there any non-joke monsters in this book?

So far, we have a horned bunny rabbit; a big oaf that rips off limbs, Monty-Python-style; a cuddly fox monster; and a fairy that steals teeth using a pair of magic pliers.

I'm starting to worry that Paizo's take on Cthulhu is going to resemble a plush Cthulhu doll instead of a true cosmic horror.

@ Epic Meepo: I am starting to agree. I have been looking forward to this release, but so far the Previews have been less than promising.

They're just softening us up for the thing the GM the busts out that will send us screaming into the night. They realise that they can't get us to buy the book if we experience total SAN loss before it comes out.

Actually seems a bit too strong for a 1/4. Maybe a 1/3 (same as a goblin) or a 1/2, but a 1/4 CR with Invis and Sleep 1/day and the ability to deal some ability damage and DR to boot.

I don't think tooth faeries are a joke - I was legitimately terrified the entire time I was watching Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.

Besides, these are the previews, so of course they aren't going to show us the really horrifying stuff right away :)

I just watched Hellboy 2 today!

When I saw this I was also like "I hope they have the swarm in the book!"

Obviously it's going to have more descriptive text. For instance, to explain why this is a fey with the extraplanar subtype. The Environment line doesn't list a specific plane.

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

Haha! I love these!

Now we just need an AP for them to feature in... How about a sort of "Grimm's Fairy Tale" AP?

Glad to see you picked Damien Mammoliti for some of your artwork. He was great to work with and his artwork is amazing.

Okay I could see with some of those monsters, but Grendel? I can't say there is much cute and fluffy about him from either Beowulf or any of the myriad adaptations. But I watch a lot of horror and so when I see "rip off limbs" the head image I get isn't from Monty Python...

Look in the bestiary 4 topic, I posted a link there.

Huh, I feel like it should be at least CR 1/3. Sleep as a SLA is nasty if the PCs are unlucky, and it's got paralysis as well.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Yiiikes... no way that is a CR 1/4. No way in hell.

Invisibility + sleep, ability damage + bleed, a +7 bonus to hit with paralysis (!), a +7 CMB, a 60 ft. (perfect) flight speed, sickening death throes, damage reduction, and high AC and saves for the listed CR? Sorry - that's a CR 1/2 at least.

Just one of these things could coup de grace a 1st-level character during the first round of combat (one paralysis bite during the guaranteed invisibility surprise round, then one coup de grace on round 1). It has a reasonable initiative mod, so it might even pull it off before anyone can engage it to cause the coup de grace to threaten. A perfect flight speed even means that there's no Fly check required to hover in the paralyzed creature's square.

EDIT: Just realized the pliers also allow it to threaten creatures within 5 ft., which means it suffers virtually no disadvantage for its size.

No way this is a CR 1/4.

Why are all small creatures in pathinder so weak?

Really I want to see more Aurumvoraxes and Demiliches (proves that small creatures can be higher level than CR3...

Quickling, Almiraj, Tooth Fairy... all victims of being small so low-cr...

The pipe fox was just... weird, but Monty Python is not what comes to mind when I read the Grendel's "Gruesome Dismemberment" ability.

Yeah, tooth fairies are exactly the kind of thing that are funny until they aren't. This is the ultimate campsite monster, with a +19 stealth your level 1 character on watch probably won't spot the little fiends.

Then in the surprise round they use the Steal combat maneuver to steal a player character's tooth. (Or one from each of 4 PCs, it's a CR 1 encounter).

Suddenly, the party is awakened and you have a chase as the blighters fly at 60 ft/round. If (and when) they make their escape the PC has a charisma penalty the next day.

Then the next night they do it again.

Chances are, next week are the Colossi, which are rumored to be constructs that transform.

So stoked!

As for silly monsters, I don't see how getting your arms ripped off is silly. Then again, when I think of tooth fairy, I think of the hellboy 2 version.

Also, since Gan is too lazy to post it, the Pathfinder ARt page is here

There's also the horror movie Darkness Falls, which features the Tooth Fairy as the antagonist.

plot:
She's more of a unique hag-like creature. Her shtick is killing whomever looks at her, and she is susceptable to light.

It's nice to see some more low level critters out there to dispel the belief that all DnD 1st-3rd level encounters need to be kobolds or dire rats. Though it seems to be mostly fey (atomies, grigs).

I still fail to see how Grendel is silly. Not gonna lie, if my wizard got his arms ripped off by the descendant of Cain, he probably wouldn't be very happy. Like, at all.

That was less a "Really?" of "Oooh... maybe we CAN get away with a cute Cthulhu" and more of a "Really?" of "You really think I, of all people, would let a cute Cthulhu see print in a Paizo Product?"

I don't know man, I think this is one of the creepier monsters out there. Having some dead-eyed little freak clamoring up your helpless body to pull out your teeth, leaning in to whisper in a high pitched voice, "Is it safe?" is downright disturbing to me. And if he has a couple of giggling friends tugging on your fingernails with pliers while you can't do a thing about it? Yeah.

There is no way this thing is a CR1/4, this guy is a CR 1 easy.

Pathfinder Card Game Subscriber

Maybe small monsters just end up getting shorted (pun intended) on their CR due to the CR/stat guidelines in the Bestiary? I mean, the Demilich is only CR 14 and it can cast Wail of the Banshee as a SLA at will, as well as instantly kill someone if they fail a save as a supernatural ability.

my party really likes the "quirky" so i can this will be a favored of my party
