Pathfinder Battles Preview: Big Fish

Friday, May 3, 2013

We're so deep in a state of relief here at Paizo after shipping all of our August/Gen Con releases to the printer this afternoon that I almost forgot to write this week's Pathfinder Battles preview blog! And since we certainly can't have that going into a gorgeous weekend filled with lots of stuff OTHER THAN work (for the first time in months!), I thought I'd take a few minutes to reveal some more cool minis from this summer's upcoming Skull & Shackles set of prepainted plastic fantasy miniatures!

Up first we have the Cyclops, a monocular giant whose folk once controlled a vast kingdom not far from the Shackles Isles. I have a soft spot for this particular monster, as I featured a Cyclops in my Pathfinder Tales free webfiction story, "Two Pieces of Tarnished Silver". I've long awaited the chance to bring our version of the Cyclops to Pathfinder Battles, and since cyclopes feature prominently in the Skull & Shackles Adventure Path, this set was my best chance. A Large figure, the Cyclops is slated at the uncommon rarity.

Several weeks ago we revealed Selissa, an off-size Medium Aquatic Naga NPC from the Skull & Shackles campaign. Fans of correctly-sized monsters will be pleased to learn that this set also includes a regular Large-sized Aquatic Naga, ready to terrorize the waterways of your campaign. This figure is an uncommon.

And last up this week we have the Sea Cat, a venerable monster of fantasy all dolled up in a shiny new Pathfinder version. Sea Cats are among my favorite aquatic monsters, and I'm thrilled to finally bring them to prepainted plastic. Like the Cyclops and the Aquatic Naga, the Sea Cat is also slated at the Uncommon rarity.

And that's it for this week. At long last the sun is shining down on Seattle, and I'm headed out of the office to do almost anything other than work. I hope your weekend is as fun as the one I'm planning to have!

It's not too late to set up an ongoing subscription to make sure you don't miss a single Pathfinder Battles release!

See you next week! I'll be the one with the suntan!

Love the cyclops.

Kittens of the sea!

PETA was here lol

Wow. Three brilliant minis.

The last two are nice for bringing in additional water based monsters. That has always been something lacking in the PPM market, and bravo to Erik for fixing that with this set.

But the Cyclops is simply fantastic. Sea Cats and Naga are nice for random encounters outside of S&S, but that Cyclops is something I can drop anywhere and terrify my players with. More like that please.

Sea Cat is amazing. It looks like it is swimming on the clear peg. Well done!

We are going to have a lot of choices with Nagas. It should make for a fun encounter.

The Cyclops does look good. No previous version looks anything like it. I do hope that a variety of these are coming.

Liberty's Edge

The Sea Cat is awesome and I like the other two as well. Good job on these.

I like them all, especially the Sea Cat and Cyclops. Is this the only Cyclops in the set or will we see another (or perhaps a Cyclopess[sp? female cyclops]). In any case in a future set I want to see more Cyclopes, including but not limited too a Savage Cyclops, a cyclops seer, a cyclops matron, a Bi-clops (Ettin with 2 Cyclopes heads), in short (in the words of Ringo Starr) all cyclopaedia. ;-)

Wow, colour me impressed. Always been a bit hesitant about cycopes, never seen any artwork that blew me away unfortunately, but the art clearly translates into miniatures incredible well. That is a beautiful(?) piece of work. Will need me a few of those I think - now we just need a second for variation.
Naga - like it a lot. As a long time collector I already have a few but this one has a much more dynamic pose and what looks to be a very good colour scheme, with the blue markings. Want to see it in hand to get a better idea.
Sea cat - my favourite this preview. Awesome pose, sculpt and colour scheme. Not sure how much use it will get - looks like a lot more aquatic encounters for my PC's from August on.
I seem to be repeating myself every week but things just seem to be getting better and better with each preview.

Liberty's Edge

The Cyclops' scaling against its base makes it look to be one of the smaller Larges.

The Sea Cat looks quite awesome.

The Exchange

Wow, I love all these minis. This set is turning out to be my favorite. It just keeps getting better with each set. Great job, keep it up!

Sea Cat's a must buy. Maybe the Naga, too.
I have enough Cyclops' from the various WOTC sets.

I love the cyclops, and the sea cat. The naga looks good, and I like naga a lot, but I'm not sure that I agree that we need three naga out of four miniatures sets. Given that naga minis aren't hard to find (Hell, you gave us one in the LAST set, as well as another one in THIS set), I'm not sure what the justification for the decision was, other than "naga are REALLY EASY to sculpt".

That aside, HOT DIGGITY DAMN is that sea cat something that I want!

The best of these is the Sea cat without question! That mini is awesome! The naga is OK, but I have many and in truth if wanted they could all play out to be aquatic as they look nothing really different than this one. The cyclops look nice, I just hope it's size is good for the base size.

Even if the Cyclops is on the small size for a large, I am very happy to see it. IMHO the DDM cyclops were awful looking.

I would like to see many more similar to this, a little larger and perhaps with less armor not more.

Zoom in on the Sea Naga. The face with the eyes and blue tongue is incredible. The body glistens like a snake.

Though I really like the Cyclop's sculpt, he fell right out of the pages of the Bestiary, I agree with arbados and kodiakbear, he looks a little small.

Having just taken a look at my Bestiary, Cyclopes stand roughly 9' tall and weigh in at around 600#. In scale therefore a Cyclops would have to be between 1 3/4" and 2 1/4" tall in 28mm scale. The Cyclops' scaling looks to be spot on to me (Unlike the H&M Troll, and the RotRL Red Dragon). Part of the problem might lie in the DDM Cyclopes being what people are most recently familiar with, as they are more than a little on the bulky side. And I still want a Ray Harryhausen-esque Great Cyclops.

Hope you have a nice weekend, Erik. Even though roleplay is a hobby for us, I can certainly understand your need to have a change of scenery in your spare time. I know I do, even though I love my job. So have fun.

Leo, I think you are right. It does look like if standing erect the Cyclops would be right at 9 feet in scale. The DDM versions are really a different species. I hope we get more sculpts of Cyclopses. He is going to need friends. A female version would be awesome.

I too would like to see a Harryhausen Huge Great Cyclops.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Oh, c'mon you nay sayers.

This Naga is so much better than anything offered in the past. The variegated coloration, the triple ridge that goes from head to tail, and the incredible pose. Not to mention the accompanying offspring. How can you not like this?

And, yes, this Cyclops may not fit in with what has been produced before, but he is much closer to what I envision a Cyclops would look like. His garb and equipment are just right.

The Seacat's sculpt and paint are graceful and yet deadly. I don't think party members will be making catfish jokes while having to deal with these.

I'll say it again, all three of these minis are brilliant!

I really like the looks of all three this week. The paint, sculpt, and overall look are very good.

I see the most use with the cyclops, a must have for me. I already have a few naga and this one looks a little better than the WOTC ones, but not enough to upgrade. The sea cat looks amazing, but I can't forsee using it in game.

Of those previewed so far, there are 9 from the set I cannot see ever using, 6 that may or may not be useful, and 9 that would be very useful. Right now I'm thinking of grabbing singles, but am excited to see upcoming previews to see if buying a case would be the better option.

Even though not all of the minis produced will be useful to me, I'm pleased that such a variety is being produced. I love having minis that haven't been produced before in the varieties that are being made in Pathfinder Battles. That, in itself, makes me want to order more of these to keep Paizo's business strong.

The breakage in my Shattered Star case (and hearing that others had similar problems) was a drawback to me for ordering a case of Skull and Shackles. Wizkids is doing a good job replacing those broken minis, but navigating their customer service led to long delays of getting in tact minis that were broken in the original shipment. Folks at Paizo were a big help along the way.

I am curious to hear what changes are being made for packaging of shipments going forward.

This was pretty exciting to run into, since I'm just at the start of Skull and Shackles part 1 for my little group. I'm still new at adventure paths, and I think the minis will really make it pop.

I do have to wonder, though. Any chance of a ratfolk mini? I haven't seen a fourth of whats out there, of course, but it would be great to let my group assemble the 'bilge rat' crew they were talking about.
