RPG Superstar 2013 Top 8 Announced!

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

The Top 8 for RPG Superstar have been chosen! In Round 4, they will be creating a Golarion Location, Map and Encounter. In this round, fan votes determine who advances to Round 5, in which the Top 4 will submit a Pathfinder Module adventure proposal.

On February 26, Paizo will reveal judge comments on all 8 submissions to the general public, who will then get to discuss the entries and vote for their favorites, as well as engage in the playtest. I'm happy to see the six entries that I voted for in this round. Of the two that I didn't vote for, I'm a little surprised that Egeless Cocktail made it into the round (but not super surprised, especially after reading other people's reviews).

Either way, after that last round these are certainly the people who deserve to be here.

I am honestly surprised that only one non-US resident has advanced so far. Not that I want to imply bias, but I thought Pathfinder would be international enough to generate enough non-US people who create imaginative new things.

Imaginative new things - yes. Popular with the voters of RPGSS 2013 - perhaps not so much. Is that due to cultural differences in their creations? I don't think so. As a non-US resident who creates imaginative new things constantly I'd like to stand up for international creativity!!! (Both my folks were born and raised in the US so that may be a confusion for the statistics...)

[EDIT to add: Perhaps submitting an entry would have helped my chances this year...]

Considering that two of the five RPG superstars themselves are non US based (Christine is from Germany, Matt Goodall from Australia), it doesn't seem like it's a massive barrier. I'd guess that 1/8 is not too far off the non us fanbase, especially when you take into account the pretty big barrier of competing in a second language for many international fans.

Ah, I assumed that all people located in the US also were US citizens. My bad and lazy thinking my part.

I thought there was a tremendous international infusion in this year's competition. Ten of the Top 32 (nearly one-third) live outside the US according to their bio information. And five of the Top 16, as well. I don't think advancement of only one of them to the Top 8 is a reflection of any kind of bias or lack of inspired creativity. That's a heck of a run in my book. And the creativity level was quite fierce in the monster round this year. Anyone, regardless of their nationality, would have faced an uphill battle to stand out and win votes.
