The Bless light

Sat, Aug 18, 2012 at 11:46 AM Pacific

Great idea: get a battery-powered light, write that name if your common buff spell/effect on it, and place it in the table when the buff is in effect so people remember to add it to their rolls!

Brilliant! Consider that idea nicked.

I like it, where would I get a small light like that?

Silver Crusade

Ingenious! Stolen!

@ terek
Try here.

Not as shiny as the pictured one but a led tealight would work. A Michaels or a Hobby Lobby would have them as well. One that sweet looking however.... good hunting and let me know if you find some.

Will do, however if you find one that sweet first let me know too.

Deal.

Here is one like that that is not colored but is quite reasonably priced for 3. I think I will be ordering these. I could rig some kind of color filter for it, if I can make sure the filter wouldn't overheat.

What a wonderful idea. I love it.

Huh. I thought it was going to be some Aasimar-themed fleshlight when I saw the thread title.

Shadow Lodge

That's my right hand in Sean's picture, and my buddy Matt came up with the idea. We inevitably had to remind each other to add 'Bless' (or whatever...but for us it as usually 'Bless'), so we would make a folded-over index card sign and put it out on the battle mat. The running joke became "The Bless Lamp is lit!"

I run the cleric in our home games ('Kingmaker', currently) and am running a cleric at Pathfinder Society. So on the first day of GenCon, he presents me with an actual "Bless Lamp" :)

I don't want to give away his trade secrets, but it's pretty simple. It's one of those little battery-powered LED sticky lights (like you see advertised on TV to put in a closet or anyplace you don't have power outlets). They're really cheap (like $1).

He put some colored cellophane under the plastic some (it dissembles very easily), mostly to cut the glare (the unshielded LED lights are crazy bright in the context of a gaming table). The color is kind of a happy accident.

And Sean, you should know that my friend Matt was all smiles when you came buy our table and took a picture of the light. We're all big fans, and he was super geeked that you thought it was neat :)

I love this sort of creativity for assisting gameplay. :)

Ok thanks for the hint Sam. So apparently I was really close in my link to Amazon earlier, and finding some kind of color filter was spot on =D. I googled for Stick on lights and found a lot more possibilities. I haven't found any for $1.00 but I have found some as cheap as $2 each.

I believe the one he used was this, if not it looks really close.
Amerelle Light-n-Up Stick on Lights (Includes Batteries) 75201.

Can only find that specific one at Home Depot and Ebay and this one includes batteries... unlike other most others I've found.

Bed Bath and Beyond carries the one seen on TV called "Stick N Click".

Amazon has a few, but out of Amazon's selection that I've seen only the Fulcrum 30010 looks comparable.

Andoran

Awesome idea!

I'm excited about my Bless Lamp making it to the Paizo Blog. Thanks SKR!

A suggestion: don't bother looking for colored plastic lenses and definitely don't try to paint them.
I used the red plastic candy wrapper from the cinnamon candies one of our GMs gave us on Saturday. Just smooth it out and put it under the lens. I think most of the cheapo LED puck lights are easy to take apart.

You could probably get other colors that way pretty easily: butterscotch yellow candies, mint green, etc.

It just needs to play music and have "Inspire Courage" written on it.

Music? MUSIC?

The power of words is all that is necessary to bring out the best in your fellow adventurers - music is but a cacophonous distraction.

Music as a cacophonous distraction? What an excellent suggestion! I can see it now: the bard's player pulls out a custom musical greeting card labeled Inspire Courage. When he opens it, speed metal riffs spring forth to back incoherent screaming vocals. If anyone could tell what was being said, they would hear, "I'm inspiring your courage! I'm inspiring your courage! So be brave, mo@#$%fu@#$%! Or else!"

"Inspire courage" lyrics should be recorded backwards!
